Volunteer Tutoring in Mathematics

Introduction

As a retired Maths teacher and Certified Coach living in Gothenburg, Sweden, I find fulfillment in volunteering once a week at the local Library to assist schoolchildren with their homework. The mix of volunteers, including university students, parents, and pensioners, come together to support the students in their learning journey, particularly in Mathematics.

The Dynamic of Coaching and Teaching

Working with students, I often find myself toggling between coaching, which involves supporting the student, and teaching, which focuses on explaining the subject matter. This dynamic interaction between the teacher, student, and the subject itself is crucial in fostering a deeper understanding and independent problem-solving skills in the students. By combining coaching techniques with mathematical problem-solving approaches, I have witnessed significant progress and learning outcomes in my students over the years.

Personal Experience with a Student

Let me share a brief background of one student, Lisa, a 13-year-old who regularly seeks help with Mathematics along with her mother at the Library. Despite their struggles with the subject, Lisa's teachable nature and persistence make her a joy to work with. Her mother, though not fluent in Swedish, communicates her unwavering support and love for her daughter through gestures and expressions, symbolizing a mother's hope for a better future through education. This experience reminds me of the importance of proficiency in subjects like Mathematics, English, and Swedish in shaping one's opportunities for a better life.
