Chronic musculoskeletal pain is defined as persistent pain arising from musculoskeletal structures like bones or joints. The new ICD-11 classification introduces the concept of chronic primary and secondary musculoskeletal pain, integrating biomedical, psychological, and social axes. This distinction is crucial for accurate epidemiological analyses and patient-centered pain management.
The current ICD-10 classification is not adapted to chronic musculoskeletal pain as a standalone condition. The ICD-11 aims to classify chronic musculoskeletal pain based not only on site and disease category but also on pain mechanisms, allowing for better pain management and treatment options.
To address the inadequate representation of chronic pain in ICD-10, the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) established a task force dedicated exclusively to chronic pain syndromes for the systematic classification of chronic pain in ICD-11, excluding acute pain. The new classification was field-tested and published in a "frozen version" by WHO for implementation by member states in 2018.
