The Reserve Bank of India has decided to withdraw the Rs 2000 denomination banknotes from circulation, but they will continue to remain as legal tender. Citizens can deposit or exchange these banknotes at any bank branch until September 30, 2023. The decision was made as the objective of introducing Rs 2000 banknotes in 2016 has been fulfilled, and there are enough banknotes of other denominations available. About 89% of Rs 2000 banknotes were issued prior to March 2017.
