Assignment 1: Pandora's Box

Assignment 1, "Pandora's Box," is a project that delves into basic carpentry and joinery techniques, drawing inspiration from the Greek myth of Pandora's box. Students are tasked with constructing an A3 square box using box/finger joints and rabbet joints, emphasizing precision, finish, and craftsmanship. This assignment serves as a foundational exploration of essential furniture-making skills in a workshop setting.

Assignment 2: What's in the Box?

Building upon the skills learned in Assignment 1, "What's in the Box?" challenges students to transform the A3 square box into a storytelling device. By incorporating mechanization and moving parts like automata and music boxes, participants craft a mechanical box that narrates a compelling story inspired by the themes of Pandora's box. This project focuses on merging creativity, technical skill, and functionality with storytelling in design, encouraging students to explore different materials and mechanisms to convey their chosen narrative effectively.
