Elementary English Syllabus

Introduction

The Elementary English Syllabus for elementary schools in Papua New Guinea was published in 2015 by the Department of Education. It focuses on raising literacy standards by teaching English as a second language alongside the language syllabus. The syllabus covers speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills with set standards for children to achieve before entering primary school.

Rationale and Aims

The syllabus aims to introduce English as a second language, elevate English standards in elementary schools, prepare children for primary school learning, build on language and literacy skills, enable basic communication in English, and foster a love for learning the language. It is based on the need to develop English knowledge early, considering that most children learn it as a second language, and aligns with global language importance and literacy benchmarking practices.

Secretary's Message

The Acting Secretary for Education in Papua New Guinea approves the Elementary English Syllabus as the official curriculum for all elementary schools, emphasizing the importance of the standards-based approach from 2015 onwards. The syllabus is designed to be taught from Term 1 and focuses on foundational English skills essential for future learning.
