He was reportedly shot during a speech on Friday in the city of Nara, near Kyoto,” Japanese media outlet NHK tweeted on its official Twitter handle. Liberal Democratic Party sources also confirmed the same, Kyoto news agency reported. Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, had stepped down in 2020 citing health reasons. He was prime minister of Japan twice, from 2006-07 and again from 2012-20. He was succeeded by Yoshihide Suga and later by Fumio Kishida. Earlier today Abe, 67, was rushed to hospital after he collapsed at 11.30 am during a campaign speech in the western Japanese city of Nara ahead of Sunday’s elections for Japan’s upper house of Parliament. Initial media reports, citing authorities said that it appeared that Abe was shot in the chest and described the condition of the former PM as in “cardiopulmonary arrest.” Shinzo Abe arrived at a hospital without any vital signs after being shot during a campaign speech in western Japan. Abe sustained two gunshot wounds to the front of his neck and the bullet that killed him damaged his heart and a major artery, causing blood loss, Hidetada Fukushima, the head of emergency services at Nara Medical University Hospital said. According to Dr Fukushima, Abe went into cardiopulmonary arrest at the site of the attack and lost vital signs during transportation, the Wall Street Journal reported. The doctor declared him dead at 5:03 pm (local time). Doctors attempted a blood transfusion after they were unable to stop the bleeding, Dr Fukushima said. Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida earlier in his live address to the country today said that his condition of Abe was grave. “This is not a forgivable act,” Kishida said adding that authorities would “take appropriate measures to handle the situation.” Kishida further said that the motive behind Abe’s shooting is not known. The media outlet citing government sources also reported that Abe’s shooting suspect is an ex-member of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces. The Japanese PM also requested everyone to not speculate about any political ramifications at the time. Japanese Police have identified the suspect arrested for shooting Abe as Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41year-old resident of Nara City, according to local media. He was a towering global statesman, an outstanding leader, and a remarkable administrator. He dedicated his life to making Japan and the world a better place.” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh too expressed grief over Abe’s death. “Deeply saddened by the demise of former PM of Japan, Shinzo Abe. His role in strengthening the strategic relationship between India & Japan was commendable. He leaves behind a lasting legacy in the Indo-Pacific. My condolences to his family & the people of Japan,” he wrote in a tweet. (ANI) SALES EVENT ES F SPORT RX F SPORT NX F SPORT ENDS SEPTEMBER 6 AAP KO NAVIGATION NAHIN CHAHIYE TO KNOW YOU’VE ARRIVED. July 15, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich meets with Asian American Community Leaders Montgomery county executive Marc Elrich interacted with AAPI leaders on Friday, the 8th at his office. He touched upon many topics concerning AAPI community. He expressed regrets over the recent attack against a Taiwanese American at a McDonald’s drive through. He reiterated how the county was working to create an inclusive environment. He expressed strong support for the victim and his family. Marc was compassionate in his support and regret. He recalled the incident in detail and also expressed regret over such incidents happening more often than he would like. He urged everyone to report such incidents to police without hesitation and his administration would stand behind the law. Montgomery County is better because of its diversity and because everybody stands up for one another, he opined. Marc outlined his outreach to interfaith leaders and said, “If one group isn’t safe, than no group is safe.” He urged residents to call 911 for any such emergency and call 3012798000 for non-emergency incidents. Attorney general’s hate crime hotline can be reached at 1-866-481-8361. The county has also renewed security grants of total $800000 against hate crimes for religious groups and nonprofits in this year’s budget. He talked about serious problem of gun violence. He thanked Senator Susan Lee for leadership in Maryland senate for commitment to end ghost guns. Ghost guns are the guns assembled from a mail order kit and they have no serial numbers or traceability. Marc expressed his opposition to ghost guns. Normally a person has to go through a background check, license, seven-day waiting period and other measures in Maryland to buy a gun. However, ghost guns are considered kits and many of those rules don’t apply to them. Representative Elrich made his reservation to ghost guns apparent. He also was not pleased about recent Supreme Court ruling that made walking with guns easier. The idea of people walking into bars with guns or using guns to settle disputes in communities would be an invitation to more mayhem, he expressed. Constant news of gun violence is destabilizing the sense of security and the court’s ruling would add to that de-stability, he further added. Moreover, he did not agree with Maryland Governor’s directions to comply with Supreme Court’s ruling without looking for alternatives. The representative thanked Asian American community for services during COVID pandemic. Many members of the community donated masks and other essential equipments to the county government, essential county services and other citizens. He thanked all residents of Montgomery country for vaccinating themselves and having the highest vaccination rate in the country. He highlighted that Montgomery County has 2/3 the death rate from COVID compared to the rest of the country and that the rest of the country can learn from the county residents in following science to beat the pandemic. Asian community plays a big role in small businesses within the county. Montgomery County has created a small business advancement team. He talked about that as well as business incubators in Rockville, Germantown and Silver Spring. He highlighted planned efforts to create Main street districts within the county and Silver Spring would be the first one. County’s small business website is being redesigned to incorporate feedback from business community. Under COVID grants round four county will accept application for grants from hotel community and Marc urged the small business community to visit county biz portal and submit application if applicable. Alternatively, small business navigator can also be contacted to find more information at 2407772537. He informed about next round of American Rescue Plan grants being made available in SeptemberOctober for small business rental assistance up to $10000 or three months. Local small businesses provide more jobs than fortune 500 companies do, he opined. Additionally, he highlighted many other programs from the state and county for the benefit of small business community. He was asked a question about balancing the accountability, safety and security, hiring and retention, morale, and public confidence into police force. He said that ultimately, the expectation from Police is to enforce the laws and the residents don’t want police to disappear. An incident in other part of the country does not mean anything negative for the county police. He expressed confidence in the county police and gave several examples of the force’s service into helping the community from delivering a baby to saving lives from burning building. He highlighted the need to increase compensation for the police personnel to boost hiring and retention. He acknowledged that Montgomery country’s compensation for its police force was one of the worst. However, the council has approved an increase this year and he welcomed that. County residents want the interactions between police and residents to be respectful. One bad act does not imply that entire police force was at fault, he further added. He was proud of the fact that rarely Montgomery country police has been in the newspaper for wrong reasons. At the same time, he emphasized that every positive impact of the police force should be highlighted and celebrated. “You can’t ask someone to put their life on the line and simultaneously saying that we don’t value you,” he said. New Delhi [India], July 13 (ANI): The Supreme Court will hear pleas challenging the Agnipath recruitment scheme for defence forces on July 15. The plea will be heard by a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna. Various petitions were filed before the top court challenging the Agnipath recruitment scheme for defence forces. The Central government has also filed a caveat application in the Supreme Court urging it to hear the government in the petitions filed before the top court challenging the Agnipath recruitment scheme for defence forces. A Caveat application is filed by a litigant to ensure that no adverse order is passed against him or her without being heard. Advocate Harsh Ajay Singh has filed a PIL seeking directions to the Centre to reconsider its Agnipath recruitment scheme for armed forces. The plea said the announcement of the scheme has caused nationwide protests in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Haryana, Uttarakhand, West Bengal and various other states due to the short-term duration of the scheme in the Indian Army for four years coupled with future uncertainties of the trained ‘Agniveers’. The advocate has also sought a stay in the implementation of the scheme from June 24, 2022. Advocate ML Sharma also filed the PIL seeking quashing of the Centre’s notification for the Agnipath scheme saying the scheme is “illegal and unconstitutional”. The Union Cabinet on June 14 approved a recruitment scheme for Indian youth to serve in the three services of the Armed Forces called Agnipath and the youth selected under this scheme will be known as Agniveers. Agnipath allows patriotic and motivated youth to serve in the Armed Forces for a period of four years. The Agnipath Scheme has been designed to enable a youthful profile of the Armed Forces. July 15, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK India’s inflation above tolerance for 6th consecutive month; here’s what analysts have to say New Delhi [India], July 13 (ANI): India’s retail inflation eased marginally to 7.01 per cent in June from 7.04 per cent in the previous month helped by softening crude and edible oil prices, while staying above the central Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) tolerance limit for the sixth consecutive month. RBI predicts retail inflation to continue to remain high till the third quarter of the current financial year 2022-23, before lowering. Apart from this, domestic wholesale inflation has been in doubledigits for over a year now. At present, RBI’s mandate is to keep retail inflation at 4 per cent with a tolerance band of 2 percentage points, i.e. 200 basis points on either side. Following are some of the views on India’s consumer inflation by analysts and financial market experts: Vivek Rathi, DirectorResearch at Knight Frank India At 7 per cent in June 2022, headline consumer inflation continued to remain outside the RBI comfort zone with broad-based price rises across almost all the categories. Although elevated, various central government measures in the last two months such as reduction in petrol and diesel excise duties, cut in import duty on edible oils, curtailment measures on food exports, etc. helped contain inflation in June as seen in softened sequential price growth. The near-term consumer inflation outlook remains a little uncertain. The global commodity prices have started peaking out due to a slowdown in global demand; however, the wide gap between wholesale and retail prices continues to indicate further transmission of input costs to the consumers. Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist at CareEdge The inflation print is broadly on expected lines as higher costs for cereals, vegetables and services were offset by the lower edible oils and fuel prices. This month’s inflation data captures the impact of the excise duty cut on Petrol and Diesel announced by the Government. Going ahead, healthy monsoon progress and Kharif sowing will be crucial for containing food inflation. However, elevated global crude oil prices and the weakening of the rupee against the dollar pose threat to the near-term inflation outlook. We expect consumer inflation to track back within the RBI’s target range only in the fourth quarter of the current fiscal. For the full financial year, we project inflation to average at 6.6 per cent. RBI’s policy action will be contingent on volatility in global crude oil prices and the rate hike trajectory by the US Fed. We see a 50 basis points rate hike in August policy followed by incremental hikes of 25 basis points each in the next two meetings (till December) with a terminal repo rate at 5.90 per cent. Nish Bhatt, Founder and CEO, Millwood Kane International – an Investment consulting firm The retail inflation for the month of June has clocked in at 7.01 per cent. It is softening albeit at a slower pace over the past three months. However, it is still three straight months of inflation remaining above 7 per cent and six straight months of inflation above the RBI’s aim of 6 per cent. The slight softening in inflation data is largely on account of a reduction in duties on fuel. We expect the inflation prices to harden going forward as high prices of crude and the impact of monsoon are factored in fully. Nikhil Gupta, Chief Economist at Motilal Oswal Financial Services India’s June inflation came in at 7 per cent YoY, similar to that in May 2022 and slightly lower than the consensus (our forecast of 7.3 per cent). Lower inflation was primarily because of lower than expected food inflation. Overall, there were no surprises in the data. Thus, no major implications for August monetary policy. We expect 25 basis points hike next month. Lower than expected inflation for the second consecutive month, however, is a relief. Going forward, we expect headline inflation to stay 7 per cent in 2QFY23 and ease towards 6.5 per cent in 4Q. Vijay Kalantri, Chairman, MVIRDC World Trade Centre Mumbai – an international trade promotion organization CPI is above the 6 per cent mark for the last six months in a row. The persistently high headline inflation has led to generalized inflation with a high inflation rate in services segments such as health, recreation, and amusement. We expect inflation to remain above the comfort zone of 6 per cent in the foreseeable future until the RBI’s tightening policy shows results by containing aggregate demand. (ANI)

July 15, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Congress condemns BJP over allegations against ex-Vice Prez Ansari New Delhi [India], July 13 (ANI): Slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its allegations against former Vice President Hamid Ansari for sharing sensitive information with a Pakistani journalist, the Congress said “insinuations and innuendos” of the ruling party at the Centre are to be condemned in the strongest possible language. The statement issued by Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, “Insinuations and innuendos by a spokesperson of the BJP against Sonia Gandhi, President of the Indian National Congress and Hamid Ansari, former VicePresident of India, are to be condemned in the strongest possible language.” The facts regarding the International Conference of Jurists on International Terrorism and Human Rights held on December 11, 2010 in New Delhi are already in the public domain. The insinuations and innuendos of the spokesperson of the BJP are character assassination of the worst form, the statement said. “The levels that the Prime Minister and his party colleagues will stoop to debase public debate and spread their patented brand of lies is staggering. It reflects sickness of mind and lack of any form of integrity whatsoever,” it added. Former Vice President Mohammad HamidAnsari on Wednesday refuted the Bharatiya Janata Assam: Man burnt alive during public hearing in Nagaon’s Bor Lalung area Party’s (BJP) allegation that he had shared “confidential and sensitive” information about India with Pakistani journalist Nusrat Mirza. In a statement, Ansari said, “Yesterday and today a litany of falsehood has been unleashed on me personally in the sections of the media and by the official spokesman of the Bharatiya Janata Party: that as Vice-President of India I had invited the Pakistani journalist, Nusrat Mirza. That I had met him in a conference in New Delhi on ‘Terrorism’, and that while as Ambassador to Iran, I had betrayed the national interest in a matter for which allegations have been made by a former official of a government agency.” He said he had inaugurated the Conference on Terrorism, on December From The Poet’s Pen INDIA THIS WEEK- JULY 15, 2021 When Mother Reads Aloud - Author Unknown Nagaon (Assam) [India], July 10 (ANI): A man was allegedly burnt alive during a public hearing in Nagaon’s Bor Lalung area on Saturday. “We got information that in a public hearing a man was burnt alive after being found guilty of murder and later his body was buried. The body has been recovered. A few people were detained,” said Deputy Superintendent of police M Das. The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Bordoloi, a resident of Bor Lalung Gaon, said the police. The man was allegedly burnt for the alleged murder of a woman in the area, as per the police. Under the supervision of the magistrate, the body was excavated from the ground, and 90 pc of the dead body was recovered in burnt condition, stated the police. As is the normal practice the list of invitees would have been drawn by the organisers. He said he never invited Mirza. Ansari, a retired diplomat was the 12th Vice President of India from 2007 to 2017. Notably, Nusrat Mirza, a Pakistani columnist who has visited India many times during the Congress’ rule, boasted on camera that he used to pass on information collected during his visits to Pakistan’s InterServices Intelligence (ISI). He claimed that he had visited India on several occasions. “I was invited to India at the time of Vice Presidentship of Mohammad Hamid Ansari,” Mirza said. Following this, BJP attacked Congress and alleged that it was sharing the most secret things of the country with other countries, which they were using for terrorism. BJP said the Congress party has been “weakening the country”. Addressing a press conference, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said, “Pakistani journalist Nusrat Mirza himself has revealed that Hamid Ansari, the former Vice President of India, invited him to India five times between 2005 and 2011. Nusrat Mirza said in an interview that the then Vice President used to call him to India. During their conversations, highly sensitive and confidential information used to be shared. The BJP spokesperson said Mirza stated that the highly sensitive and confidential information was shared not just once but five times by Hamid Ansari and this information was used against India. “India is playing a leading role in the campaign against terrorism all over the world. And the Congress government invited such a person to visit India five times between 2005-11 and confidential information about the country was shared,” Bhatia said. July 15, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Clinical Men in Blue clinch T20I series, hand England 49-run defeat Birmingham[UK], July 9 (ANI): Indian pace attack led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah feasted on English bowlers and delivered tight bowling performances to help the visitors clinch the T20 series after bundling out England for 121 runs within 17 overs in the second T20I here at Birmingham on Saturday. England had an extremely disappointing day with the bat. The highlyattacking batting line-up could not live up to its hype again, fizzling out in front of Indian pacers. Indians moved on from their slightlyoff batting performance in the first half to bundle out hosts for 121 and capture the series. Only Moeen Ali and David Willey could put up some decent scores next to their names. The foundation for this amazing exhibition of bowling was laid by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the powerplays. Chasing 171, England got off a terrible start as they lost their opener Jason Roy at the very first ball of the innings. Roy edged a ball bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar straight in the hands of captain Rohit Sharma at the slips. This brought Dawid Malan to the crease. Skipper Jos Buttler was next to depart for four, dismissed by Kumar and caught by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. England was two down for 11 runs. Liam Livingstone was next up on crease, he looked good, hitting Bhuvneshwar for two fours and Hardik for a four in the next. But Jasprit Bumrah cut short his stay at the crease to just nine balls, in which he could score just 15 runs. At the end of powerplay in six overs, England stood at 36/3, with Harry Brook (4*) and Malan (13*). Harry Brook was next up on the crease, looking forward to building a stand with his partner Malan to steer his side out of trouble. But he could not last long either, as a catch from Suryakumar Yadav at long-on off a Yuzvendra Chahal delivery sent him back to the pavilion for six. This brought Moeen Ali to the crease. Fourteen runs later, Chahal got another wicket in form of Malan for 19 after the batter was caught by Harshal Patel. At this point, half of the England team was back in the hut for 55 runs. Sam Curran was at the crease after this wicket. At the end of 10 overs, England was in a scary situation, with 59/5 at the board with Moeen Ali (9*) and Sam Curran (2*). Curran was next up and dismissed within a space of six balls for just two runs. Bumrah took the wicket, with Hardik Pandya assisting him with a good catch. David Willey arrived at the crease next. David Willey and Moeen Ali now had to save England from utter humiliation. They kept the scoreboard moving for a while. Moeen Ali in particular played some fine shots. Their 34-run stand was cut short after Moeen Ali was caught by captain Rohit at mid-off for a valiant 35 off 21. Hardik Pandya had got his first wicket of the match. With this wicket, England starred at a defeat with 94/7 at the board. Chris Jordan was run out by the duo of Chahal and Rohit for just one. England was now running short of proper batters, eight wickets down at 95 runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered a struggling England with their ninth blow, as Richard Gleeson was dismissed with assistance from Virat Kohli‘s safe hands near long-off region. The final man in was Matt Parkinson. The match was now a mere formality for Indians, with England just looking to put a respectable reply to the chase on the board. They could take England to 121 runs before it ran out of batters, with Harshal Patel delivering the final nail in the coffin by dismissing Parkinson for a duck. Willey was left unbeaten at 33*. India captured the T20I series with an unassailable lead of 2-0 with one more game to go. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the pick of the bowlers for India, taking 3/15. Bumrah and Chahal also took 2/10 each. Harshal Patel and Hardik Pandya could get a wicket each. Earlier, England pacers, led by Richard Gleeson and Chris Jordan, dominated the Indian batters in the second T20I here at Birmingham as Men in Blue posted a competitive 170/8 in their 20 overs, with efforts from captain Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja proving extremely valuable for the visitors. Indian batters maintained the aggressive intent in their batting from the first match, but English bowlers took advantage of it by making the opponents go for rash shots and losing their wickets. Chris Jordan (4/27) and debutant Richard Gleeson (3/15) were the best bowlers for England. Contributions from skipper Rohit Sharma (31), Rishabh Pant (26) and Ravindra Jadeja (46*) proved to be the highlights of the Indian innings. Put to bat first by England, India was off to a good start. Wicketkeeperbatter Rishabh Pant accompanied Rohit Sharma as an opener. The duo maintained good running between the wickets and were dealing in fours and sixes, with the captain Rohit being more aggressive of two. The 49-run stand between the duo was over after debutant Richard Gleeson got his maiden T20I wicket in form of the Indian skipper for 31 off 20 after a top edge off Rohit’s bat went straight into the gloves of wicketkeeper Jos Buttler. Virat Kohli was next up on the crease. Pant struck spinner Moeen Ali for a four and six in the sixth over, taking India to 61/1 at the end of their powerplay, with Pant (26*) and Virat Kohli (1*). The next over started on an amazing note for Gleeson, as he got both Kohli and Pant for 1 and 26 respectively in the first two balls of the over. Gleeson in his debut had taken the wickets of three of India’s biggest batting stars and turned the match in his side’s favour. India was 3 wickets down at 61 runs. The duo of Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya joined hands to revive India’s innings. The duo looked really good, hitting some shots crossing the boundary line. At the end of 10 overs, India was at 86/3, with Pandya (9*) and Yadav (15*). Their budding partnership was cut short at 28-runs after Yadav was dismissed for 15 by pacer Chris Jordan after the batter was caught for 15 by Sam Curran at deep midwicket while attempting to pull a length ball. Hardik Pandya was also caught by Dawid Malan for just 12 on the very next ball at the backward point, sounding an alarm for Indians, who had lost half of their batting lineup for 89 runs. Ravindra Jadeja and Dinesh Karthik were on the crease, with a responsibility to take India safely through the second half of the innings. The duo kept the scoreboard moving for a while, but Karthik was run out for 12 off 17 by keeper Buttler, reducing India to 122/6, ending a 33-run stand between the duo. Harshal Patel joined Jadeja on the crease. Patel tried to add some acceleration in the innings, hitting a four and a six but was caught by Gleeson for 13 while trying to hit the ball over deep third man. Chris Jordan had captured his third wicket of the match, downing India to 145/7. Bhuvneshwar Kumar joined Jadeja on the crease. Jadeja kept going for India till the very end, taking them to a competitive total. Kumar was dismissed soon. India finished their innings at 170/8, with Jadeja (46*) and Jasprit Bumrah (0*) standing unbeaten. Chris Jordan (4/27) and debutant Richard Gleeson (3/15) troubled India with their tight bowling. Brief Scores: India: 170/8 (Ravindra Jadeja 46*, Rohit Sharma 31, Chris Jordan 4/27) defeated England: 121 in 17 overs (Moeen Ali 35, David Willey 33*, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/15) by 49 runs. Jasprit Bumrah regains No.1 spot in ODIs, Suryakumar Yadav jumps to career-best fifth in T20Is Dubai [UAE], July 13 (ANI): Star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah regained his number 1 spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Bowler Rankings following his career-best spell of 6/19 which helped Men in Blue crush England by ten wickets in the first ODI at The Oval on Tuesday. Bumrah had lost the top spot to New Zealand’s Trent Boult in February 2020 after being No. 1 for most of the preceding two years. He has been at the top for a total of 730 days, more than any other Indian and the ninthmost in history. Bumrah, who has been No. 1 in T20Is in the past and is currently at a career-best third position in Tests, is only the second Indian fast bowler after Kapil Dev to be No. 1 in the ODI rankings. Maninder Singh, Anil Kumble and Ravindra Jadeja are the other India bowlers to have attained top ranking. Bumrah’s newball partner Mohammad Shami too has gained after grabbing three for 31 and playing his role in skittling England out for 110 in 25.2 overs. Shami has progressed three slots to reach joint23rd position along with team-mate Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

The first ODI which was held in Kennington Oval was easily won by the Men in Blue. A tremendous performance from both the bowling and batting side of the squad ensured that India grabbed the first win in the 3-match ODI series. Jasprit Bumrah was the man of the match in the previous match. In his 7.2 over spell, he scalped 6 wickets while only conceding 19 runs. His bowling partner Mohammed Shami also helped him with a spell of 3/31, as the total of England fell to only 110 with all of the English squad falling in 25 overs only. The small total of 110 runs was chased by the opening partnership of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, guiding India to the first win in the ODI series. Excellent performances from both the pacers shows how good of a form they are be looked out for both by the English batsmen and also the fans. The explosive bowling by both of them and other pacers in the squad like Hardik Pandya and Prasidh Krishna will be backed by spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja who will be looking to trap English batsmen. The bowling attack of India certainly looks strong for the next match as well after the marvellous performance in the first match. After limiting English squad to a total of only 110 runs, it was all upto the Indian batsmen to win the game for the team and they did not disappoint. The opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan was enough to reach the mere total of 110 runs as the duo banged 76 and 31 runs respectively to win the game for the team. Both the openers look in really good form. Dhawan who got his place back in the squad recently will be looking forward to strengthen his position for the upcoming 50-over World Cup next year. Navneet Kaur (30, 45) starred for India, scoring a brace, while Deep Grace Ekka (38) also scored a crucial goal in the match. For Japan, Yu Asai (20) scored the sole goal in the match. The best chance for the Indian team came when Navneet Kaur broke through the Japanese defence and penetrated inside the circle. But Japan averted the danger and the first quarter ended with both teams at 0-0. India began the second quarter from where they had left off. An early threatening move forced Japan’s Shihori Oikawa to save the ball from the edge of the goalpost. A shot on target from Vandana Katariya a couple of minutes later tested goalkeeper Eika Nakamura. A Penalty Corner in the 20th minute led to Yu Asai opening the scoring for Japan. Navneet Kaur equalised the score with a stunning late goal and the two teams went to halftime at 1-1. The second half started with both teams keeping the ball in the midfield and trying to maintain possession. An early Penalty Corner attempt from Gurjit Kaur went wide off the target. But a few minutes later, Deep Grace Ekka converted from another Penalty Corner, hitting the ball towards the bottom right corner to give India a 2-1 lead. Japan conceded once again in the final seconds of the quarter as Navneet Kaur scored her second goal of the match, and India increased their lead to 3-1. Japan started searching for goals to get back into the contest straight away in the final quarter. But India maintained a strict defence line to prevent any danger. In the final few minutes of the match, India maintained possession deep inside Japan’s half, while the opposition struggled to get on to the ball, and India picked up a comfortable 3-1 win over Japan.
