At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.” Earlier on Sunday, Pope Francis delivered his Easter message from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to thousands of people gathered in Vatican Square. April 25, 2025 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK “His affection for people Supreme Court Terms Infant Trafficking ‘Most of India will always be cherished: PM Modi condoles Dangerous,’ Says Situation Getting Worse Pope Francis’ demise ` New Delhi [India], April 21 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condoled the death of Pope Francis stating that the Pontiff’s “affection for the people of India will always be cherished.” “Deeply pained by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. In this hour of grief and remembrance, my heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community. Pope Francis will always be remembered as a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage by millions across the world. From a young age, he devoted himself towards realising the ideals of Lord Christ. He diligently served the poor and downtrodden. For those who were suffering, he ignited a spirit of hope,” PM Modi said on X. “I fondly recall my meetings with him and was greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusive and all-round development. His affection for the people of India will always be cherished. May his soul find eternal peace in God’s embrace,” the Prime Minister said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met with Pope Francis on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Apulia, Italy. Pictures from the meeting showed PM Modi and the Pope sharing a warm embrace. “Met Pope Francis on the sidelines of the G7 Summit. I admire his commitment to serve people and make our planet better. Also invited him to visit India,” he had said on his X platform. PM Modi had previously met Pope Francis in 2021 at the Vatican, where they discussed a wide range of issues, including the Covid-19 outbreak. Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian on Monday expressed his deep sadness at the demise of Pope Francis, who according to news from the Vatican, passed away early this morning. “Deeply saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. A profound loss for the global community. His life of service, compassion, and faith touched millions. Heartfelt condolences to all grieving this immense loss,” Kurian said. The 266th Catholic Church leader died this morning at his residence, and the announcement was made by Cardinal Farrell, camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church. Kurian had last year in December told reporters that the head of the Catholic Church was likely to visit India after 2025 in the backdrop of the Church’s celebration of its Jubilee Year. The minister had traveled to the Vatican for the ordination of Monsignor George Jacob Koovakad, a native of Kerala, who was elevated to Cardinal by Pope Francis. Meanwhile, the Vatican said that the ascertainment of death of the Pope takes place in the chapel, rather than in the room where he died, and his body is immediately placed inside the coffin. According to Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, the late Pope Francis had requested that the funeral rites be simplified. The “Papal Interregnum” — the period between the death of one pope and the election of another — began when Francis passed away. Cardinals must now decide exactly when the funeral can take place, and after that, when the conclave can begin. But much of the timeline is predetermined; the pope’s death triggered the start of nine days of mourning known as the Novendiales, and the pope must be buried between the fourth and sixth day after death. The body of the pope will be displayed at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican for mourning, and a mass will take place on each day. Mourners lined up for miles to see the body of Pope John Paul II, the last serving pope to die, in 2005, as per a report in CNN. Following a period of mourning, all cardinals under the age of 80 will convene to pick the next leader of the Catholic Church. The process for a new pope to be chosen can take between two and three weeks. Pope Francis on Sunday delivered his Easter message from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to thousands of people gathered in Vatican Square. The 88-yearold head of the Roman Catholic Church was recently discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he spent five weeks receiving treatment for an infection that led to double pneumonia. (ANI) New Delhi, April 21 (ANI) — The Supreme Court expressed serious concern over the rising issue of child trafficking in India, calling the situation “most dangerous” and stating that it is worsening. A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R. Mahadeva, hearing a case related to trafficking of newborns, directed the Delhi police to take all necessary actions to locate kidnapped infants. The court emphasized that the trafficking of children is a major societal threat, particularly noting the sale and purchase of children as an alarming crime. Justice Pardiwala stated, “The situation seems to have gone from bad to worse,” and further added, “If it’s a girl child, you know where she will end up.” The case involves a trafficking ring operating in the Dwarka area, where newborns were allegedly being abducted and sold. The bench gave the Delhi police four weeks to identify and apprehend the gang leader behind the trafficking and locate the kidnapped infants. The court was informed that seven individuals had been arrested, and disturbing reports emerged that some parents were also involved in selling their own children. The bench ordered the police to find the three missing children and apprehend the kingpin of the trafficking operation, emphasizing that the interrogation of the gang leader would provide valuable insights into the network. “Most dangerous, this is most dangerous,” said Justice Pardiwala while referring to the situation. The case stemmed from a media report exposing the activities of a gang trafficking newborns across state borders, particularly from remote villages and hospitals in Rajasthan and Gujarat. The infants were reportedly sold to childless couples for up to Rs 10 lakh. The Supreme Court has previously addressed the issue of child trafficking, stating that hospitals involved in such crimes should have their licenses suspended, and it has issued guidelines for states to curb trafficking activities. The court also canceled the bail granted to accused individuals in a child trafficking case by the Allahabad High Court. The Supreme Court will continue to monitor the case closely and take further action if necessary. MODI-VANCE MEETING FROM PAGE 1 and the US, leveraging the strengths of Make America Great Again (MAGA) and Viksit Bharat 2047,” the release said. Prime Minister and Vice President Vance reviewed and positively assessed the progress in various areas of bilateral cooperation. “They welcomed the significant progress in the negotiations for a mutually beneficial India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement focused on the welfare of the people of the two countries. Likewise, they noted continued efforts towards enhancing cooperation in energy, defence, strategic technologies and other areas. The two leaders also exchanged views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest, and called for dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward,” the release said. The Prime Minister extended his best wishes to the Vice President, the Second Lady, and their children for a pleasant and productive stay in India. He also conveyed his warm greetings to President Trump and said that he looked forward to his visit to India later this year. The US Vice President, who is on a fourday official visit to India, arrived in the national capital on Monday. This is Vice President Vance’s first visit to India. He will also visit Jaipur and Agra before departing for Washington DC. The high-level visit comes amid trade negotiations between the two countries following the US decision to impose reciprocal tariffs on several countries, including India. INDIA THIS WEEK Terrorists Open Fire in Pahalgam; Area Sealed, Search Operation Underway April 25, 2025 Friday Anantnag (Jammu and Kashmir), April 22 (ANI): A terrorist attack in the scenic Pahalgam area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday afternoon has left at least two civilians injured, officials reported. The attack prompted swift action from security forces, who have since sealed the area and launched a search operation to track down the perpetrators. Ambulances were seen rushing to the site, signaling possible casualties, though authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of injured individuals. Security forces have tightened checks and surveillance at all exit routes from Pahalgam to prevent the terrorists from fleeing. A massive cordonand-search operation is underway, with the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and paramilitary forces working in coordination. Reacting strongly to the attack, BJP leader Ravinder Raina accused “Pakistani terrorists” of targeting innocent tourists. Speaking from Nowshera, Raina said, “Pakistani terrorists have carried out a cowardly terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam. These cowardly terrorists cannot face our brave soldiers, so they target unarmed civilians.” He added that the injured tourists were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment and vowed that those responsible — and anyone aiding them — would face severe consequences. Former J&K Chief Minister and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti also condemned the attack, calling it “cowardly” and “deeply concerning.” In a statement on social media, she wrote: “I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, which tragically killed five and injured several, as reported. Such violence is unacceptable and must be denounced... Ensuring visitor safety is paramount, and steps must Jeddah [Saudi Arabia], April 23 (ANI): US President Donald Trump held a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday and offered his condolences at the loss of lives in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Trump condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam and expressed full support to India to bring to justice the perpetrators of this “heinous attack.” In a post on X, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, stated, “President Donald Trump @realDonaldTrump @POTUS called PM @narendramodi and conveyed his deepest condolences at the loss of innocent lives in the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. In a post on X, Rubio wrote, “The United States stands with India.” He made the statement in response to the post shared by the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs in the US State Department on the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, calling for holding the perpetrators accountable. “The United States strongly condemns the terrorist attack in Kashmir. Nothing can justify such a heinous act killing tourists and civilians. Our thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. We continue to monitor the situation and call for perpetrators to be held accountable,” the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs in the US State Department posted on X. US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz called the attack in Pahalgam a “terrible tragedy.” He made the statement in response to the post shared by US President Donald Trump on the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. “A terrible tragedy. Please join me in praying for the victims and their families,” Waltz posted on X. Earlier, US President Donald Trump condemned the terrorist attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, expressing solidarity with India. Sharing a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Deeply disturbing news out of Kashmir. The United States stands strong with India against Terrorism. We pray for the souls of those lost, and for the recovery of the injured.” “Prime Minister Modi and the incredible people of India have our full support and deepest sympathies. Our hearts are with you all!” he added. Following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level security meeting with all the agencies on Tuesday. In the evening, the Home Minister reached Srinagar for the security review meeting. Amit Shah also briefed PM Modi about the incident. Authorities have not yet released a detailed account of the attackers or the motive behind the assault. Further updates are awaited as the search operation continues and investigations unfold. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, South Kashmir, where several civilians were reportedly injured after terrorists opened fire on Tuesday afternoon. While the official casualty count is yet to be confirmed, the CM described the incident as one of the worst attacks on civilians in recent years. “The death toll is still being ascertained, so I don’t want to get into those details,” Abdullah stated. “This attack is much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years.” Deeply shaken, the CM called the act “an abomination,” expressing his outrage in no uncertain terms. “I’m shocked beyond belief. This attack on our visitors is an abomination. The perpetrators of this attack are animals, inhuman, and worthy of contempt. No words of condemnation are enough. I send my sympathies to the families of the deceased.” He added that arrangements were being made at local hospitals to treat the injured. Senior leader Sakina Itoo has reportedly moved to oversee operations at the hospital, and the Chief Minister himself is flying back to Srinagar to monitor the situation firsthand. The attack has drawn condemnation from political leaders across party lines, who stressed its implications on regional peace and the tourism-driven economy of Kashmir. Congress leader Vikar Rasool Wani emphasized the economic impact, saying: “Why are they attacking the tourists? The economy is totally dependent on tourism. This is part of a big conspiracy... the government must investigate.” N a t i o n a l Conference spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar called it a “dark day” for Kashmir, stating: “The tourism season was just about to begin, and now this. Kashmir is known for hospitality—we unequivocally condemn this attack.” BJP leader Ravinder Raina repeated earlier remarks, blaming “Pakistani terrorists” for targeting unarmed civilians. “These cowardly terrorists cannot face our brave soldiers, so they attack innocent tourists. They will not be spared.” Security forces, along with Jammu and Kashmir Police, rushed to the location and have sealed the area. A fullfledged search operation is underway, and all exit routes are under tight surveillance. The incident has sent shockwaves through the valley, particularly with the tourism season set to pick up. Authorities are expected to release an official statement on the number of casualties once the situation is fully assessed. In response to the terrorist attack targeting tourists in Pahalgam, South Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an urgent telephonic conversation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday. During the call, PM Modi instructed Shah to take all necessary measures to respond to the attack and ensure swift action against the perpetrators. The Prime Minister has also directed the Home Minister to personally visit the site in Anantnag district to assess the situation and oversee the security arrangements on the ground. “The Prime Minister has expressed deep concern over the incident and emphasized the need for a strong response to such acts of terror,” said a government official familiar with the matter.

No Personal Gain, No Proceeds of Crime He reiterated that Young Indian has never distributed any dividends or paid salaries to its directors, who are all senior Congress leaders. By law, as a notfor-profit company under Section 25 (now Section 8) of the Companies Act, YI cannot financially benefit its shareholders. “There is no transaction of money. Without money, there are no ‘proceeds of crime’. Without proceeds of crime, there is no money laundering,” he stated. Chidambaram pointed to a 2013 private complaint that triggered the original criminal proceedings, which have been stayed by the Delhi High Court since around 2020. He claimed the ED’s case, registered in 2023, is based on that still-pending complaint. On April 9, 2025, the ED filed a chargesheet under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), a move Chidambaram said lacks legal merit and is instead politically motivated. “This is a vendetta being carried out by the ED at the behest of its political masters,” he charged. Calling the case an assault on the integrity and reputation of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, Chidambaram declared that the Congress party will not remain silent. “The entire Congress party will resist, fight back, and defeat this political assault. Truth will prevail. Justice will prevail. We will prevail,” he concluded. The case continues to be a major flashpoint ultra-modern trains, new passenger trains between Pipra and Saharsa, connecting the newly built Supaul-Pipra line and Samastipur and Saharsa, via Vithan and Alouli, will also be flagged off. The Prime Minister will also dedicate three new rail projects in Bihar: the Supaul-Pipra, Khagaria-Alouli, and Hasanpur-Vithan lines. Passenger services will commence on these routes as well, enhancing local connectivity. It is notable that with multiple Vande Bharat Express services already operational and the addition of Amrit Bharat and Namo Bharat trains, Bihar is entering a new era of rail transportation. These developments underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity, safety, and comfort for passengers while aligning with the broader vision of a selfreliant India. In this sequence, the addition of these trains and projects will especially benefit residents of North Bihar and the Mithila region, offering faster, safer and more convenient travel options. (ANI) National Herald Case: Chidambaram Slams ED Action, Questions “Where Is the Money Laundering Offence?” New Delhi, April 21 (ANI) — Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram strongly criticized the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday over its recent chargesheet in the National Herald case, calling the agency’s action a “blatant abuse of power” aimed squarely at Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Addressing a press conference, Chidambaram delivered a detailed defense rooted in financial and legal arguments, asserting that there is no evidence of money laundering or financial misconduct, and questioned the ED’s jurisdiction in the matter. “These are the facts — where is the crime? Where is the tainted money? Where is the offence of money laundering?” Chidambaram asked. Chidambaram laid out the historical context of Associate Journals Ltd (AJL), which owns National Herald, Navjeevan, and Qaumi Awaz — newspapers with roots in India’s freedom movement. AJL, a public limited company, holds six properties across India, most of which are leasehold and government-allotted. Between 2002 and 2011, Congress provided Rs 90 crore in financial support to the debt-ridden AJL to pay off statutory dues and salaries. In 2010, Congress leaders formed a not-for-profit company called Young Indian (YI), which later took over AJL’s debt after paying a Rs 50 lakh consideration. The loan was converted into equity, making YI the majority stakeholder. Chidambaram emphasized that such restructuring is routine, citing the government’s Efforts on to restore highway, relief being provided to people affected by flash floods in Ramban: Omar Abdullah

Upon assessment of the ground situation, the Army initiated immediate action in coordination with civil administration officials, including the District Commissioner, Senior Superintendent of Police, and the Superintendent of Traffic.
