Conversion: Choose The Right LED Replacement Bulb THE OLD DAYS OF SELECTING LIGHT BULBS BY WATTS ARE OVER. LET'S LOOK AT HOW TO USE LUMENS TO CHOOSE THE BEST LED BULBS Step 1. Understand Watts Watts are a measure of energy consumption. When we pay our electric bill, we pay for the number of watts we use. A 60-watt bulb consumes 60 watts of energy. Since we used 60-watt incandescent bulbs for so many years, we associated a certain level of brightness with 60 watts. But we can’t do that anymore, since modern LED technology generates more light with less watts. Instead, we need to use a measurement for visible light energy: lumens. Think of lumens as a "NEW" way of knowing how BRIGHT a lamp is. THINK OF LUMENS AS A "NEW" WAY OF KNOWING HOW BRIGHT A LAMP IS LUMENS = LIGHT OUTPUT Step 2. Understand Lumens A lumen is a unit of measurement for the amount of visible light energy. A brighter light equals more lumens. We see these lumen numbers on the labels found on all new LED bulb packages. Now that we understand watts and lumens, we can use both terms to come up with lumens per watt or “efficacy.” Sometimes the term “luminous efficacy” is used. This is a measure of how well a light source converts energy (watts) into light (lumens). Tungsten incandescent bulbs had an efficacy of about 13 lumens per watt, while LED technology would generate about 100 lumens per watt. In other words, LEDs are about 7.5 times more effective than incandescent bulbs at generating light. When replacing an incandescent bulb, this 7.5:1 ratio will help you figure out which LED bulb to use. For example, if you need to replace a 60-watt incandescent bulb with an LED bulb, then divide 60 watts by 7.5 to get 8 watts – that will be a good estimate. But we should note that efficacy varies wildly from manufacturer to manufacturer, so you should check the label and try to match lumens. Refer to the charts below for a ready reference. Finally, note that all Megaman LED bulbs have the incandescent or halogen equivalent wattage displayed on each of their product packaging. We make the switch-over to LED easy.
