PROFILE

Tabung Amanah Zakat & Kebajikan University of Cyberjaya (TAZUoC), formerly known as Tabung Zakat & Kebajikan CUCMS, received approval for its establishment during University Management Meeting at CUCMS in 2008. This approval was granted through a proposal for establishment presented and prepared by Assoc. Prof. Mohamad Saidy Bin Hj Ismail (current chairman of TAZUoC). The main purpose of establishing TAZUoC is to collect various type of zakat including income, business, fitrah and others from lecturers, staff and parents of students in UoC. The distribution of zakat is managed by TAZUoC to be distributed to UoC students as well as UoC staff who are categorized under asnaf. The zakat distribution is focused on supporting their high education fees and living expenses in Cyberjaya throughout their study based on our policy. TAZUoC receives comprehensive support from the university management, with the Human Resources Division assisting in monthly salary deductions for staff who choose to pay zakat with us. Interestingly, zakat payment can be an alternative way to redeem some amount of income tax, as permitted under the relevant Act (terms and conditions applied). TAZUOC Annual Report 2024

PROFILE

ZAKAT IN UOC

In Malaysia, the government allows the payment of zakat as an alternative to income tax through rebate deductions. According to the Income Tax Act 1967, Section 61(3), a rebate deduction is granted to zakat payers. All they need to do is to submit the official zakat receipt issued by the Zakat Board (Lembaga Zakat Selangor, LZS) or other relevant authorities to The Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRBM/LHDN) to receive the income tax relief. Lecturers and support staff of UoC has been the primary zakat payer through TAZUoC, even since the existing of CUCMS, with many contributing via monthly salary deductions under the Salary Deduction Scheme (SPG). TAZUoC actively promotes this method year-round. Those who are interested to register can simply fill-out the form for review by TAZUoC executive before submission to HR. We are highly encourage all the staff in UoC to implement this zakat payment method. Indeed, every Muslim who fulfills the necessary conditions is obligated to pay zakat, as stated by Allah in Surah An-Nur, 37: “Those who are steadfast in their prayers and pay zakat; they fear a Day when hearts and eyes will tremble”. MANAGEMENT

OF TAZUOC 2024 TAZUoC has been appointed as the Penolong Amil IPT by Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) since 2018. The advantage provided by LZS to Penolong Amil IPT is the return of 50% from the zakat collection by each month. As result, TAZUoC can manage the zakat distribution process by providing financial assistance to UoC students and staff in need. In 2024, TAZUoC approved zakat assistance for two main purposes: (a) financial aid for asnaf and (b) support for student activities. All applicants are interviewed and assessed for eligibility to receive monthly allowances and tuition fee assistance. TAZUoC also supports the welfare of UoC students and staff by providing emergency funds for funerals, accidents, chronic illnesses, and natural disasters. Furthermore, TAZUoC is actively sponsoring financially to student clubs organizing student development programs. For instance, in 2024, TAZUoC has sponsored three Ramadhan Iftar organized by students from CUPPS, KIQ & Student Council, one Solidarity Palestine program, organized by the Neurovia Club, 4 outreach programs organized by MAS, Avicenna Club, ECHO and Tahfiz. In October 2024, we have sponsored one Tahfiz student representing UoC for Program Tahsin Al-Quran Bersanad in Egypt, organized by UNITEN. TAZUOC Annual Report 2024
