They also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest,” Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs Randhir Jaiswal said. Earlier today, the Amir of Qatar, who arrived in India on a two-day visit, received the Guard of Honour and a ceremonial welcome in the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He was received by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with senior ministers from the government. The Qatari Amir also interacted with the ministers. President Droupadi Murmu interacted with the Qatari delegation accompanying the Amir. The Qatar Amir is accompanied by a highlevel delegation, including ministers, senior officials and a business delegation. He had earlier come to India on a State Visit in March 2015. The visit of Amir of Qatar will provide further momentum to the growing multifaceted partnership between the two countries. India–Qatar cooperation in diverse sectors has been steadily growing in a framework provided by historically close ties and regular and substantive engagement, including at the highest levels of the two Governments. (ANI) trade valued at over USD 154 billion in FY 2021-22. Earlier today, India and Qatar signed an agreement to formally elevate their relations to a strategic partnership and exchanged multiple memorandums of understanding (MoU) with a focus on trade, energy, investments, innovation, technology, food security, culture & people-to-people ties. The MEA Secretary, CPV & OIA, also stated that Qatar was a key “energy supplier” for India and that both leaders noted the agreement made back in February 2024, where Qatar Energy and Petronet LNG Limited stated that it would send 7.5 million metric tonnes per annum of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Qatar to India, starting in 2028, for 20 years. “India and Qatar share a very vibrant partnership in the area of energy. Qatar is a major source of energy for India. Both leaders today noted that in February 2024, Qatar Energy and Petronet LNG Limited signed an agreement for the supply of 7.5 million metric tonnes per annum of LNG from Qatar to India for 20 years starting 2028,” Chatterjee said. “Both leaders also discussed ways to further strengthen and broaden the energy partnership, including exploring mutual investments. India and Qatar today enjoy deep-rooted, friendly relations anchored in historic trade and peopleto-people ties...The prime minister thanked the Amir of Qatar for his support for the large Indian community in Qatar, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic period...Two agreements and five MoUs were signed during the state visit of the Amir of Qatar,” he added. Earlier today, the Amir of Qatar, who arrived in India on a two-day visit on Monday, received the Guard of Honour and a ceremonial welcome in the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Meanwhile, the Agreement on the Establishment of a Strategic Partnership between the two countries was exchanged in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, at the Hyderabad House here in the national capital. (ANI) India negotiating FTA with GCC and Qatar: MEA New Delhi [India], February 18 (ANI): India is in the process of negotiating a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and is also considering an FTA with Qatar. This move aims to strengthen bilateral relations and deepen cooperation in various fields such as trade, energy, investment, security, and regional and international affairs. During a special briefing on the state visit of the Amir of Qatar to India on Tuesday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary, CPV & OIA, Arun Kumar Chatterjee said that India and GCC “at this moment negotiating about having a free trade agreement,” and in addition, India is also exploring the possibility of signing a similar agreement with Qatar in the future. “India and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), we are at this moment negotiating about having a free trade agreement. As far as Qatar is concerned, both sides are exploring the possibility of signing a free-trade agreement in future and that was one of the discussions that took place in this round of talks,” said Chatterjee. India has enjoyed centuries of good relations with countries like Iran, while smaller gas-rich nation Qatar is one of India‘s closest allies in the region. India shares good relations with most of the countries in the Gulf. The two most important reasons for the relationship are oil and gas, and trade. Qatar accounts for 41% of India‘s total natural gas imports. Two additional reasons are the huge number of Indians who work in the Gulf countries, and the remittance they send back home. As per a research paper published by the Reserve Bank of India, in the financial year 202021, remittances from the UAE to India were USD 15.40 billion, which is 18% of India‘s total inward remittances. Overall, these agreements have the potential to significantly boost India‘s economic and strategic ties with the GCC and Qatar and could have far-reaching implications for the country’s trade, energy, and security policies. “As far as strategic partnership agreement is concerned, it actually elevates the present state of bilateral relations to a strategic level. What we are looking at is deepening the cooperation in the fields of trade, energy, investment, security as well as in the regional and international flora...,” added Chatterjee. According to MEA, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Amir of Qatar held discussions on wideranging topics including FTA, technology, energy and people-to-people ties. GCC is a union of six countries in the Gulf region — Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. The council is the largest trading bloc of India. A free trade agreement between India and the GCC has been in the works since 2004 when a Framework Agreement on Economic Cooperation was signed. A l t h o u g h negotiations stalled, they have resumed, with India seeking to increase trade with the GCC, which is currently its largest trading partner bloc, with bilateral

(ANI) His tenure spanning 4.5 years in the Commission was characterised by silent yet deep-rooted reforms across various domains spanning structural, technological, capacity development, communication, international cooperation and administration. Kumar, during his tenure, had completed one full electoral cycle with the conduct of elections in 31 states and Union Territory, the Presidential and Vice Presidential elections in 2022, Lok Sabha elections of 2024 and Rajya Sabha renewals–a rare and monumental feat in electoral management. The Prayagraj: Over 555 million devotees take holy dip in Mahakumbh as of February 18 elections were conducted peacefully with near-zero repolls and incidents of violence, the Commission stated. In his farewell address, CEC Kumar thanked the 15 million polling officials for their dedication to upholding democratic values. He asserted that the trust of close to nearly a billion voters was unfazed by motivated and uncorroborated attacks on India’s democratic institutions. As a proponent of technology, Kumar outlined a path for strengthening the conduct of elections while guarding against the threats of cyberattacks and misinformation on social media. He lauded the voters for their vibrant participation, especially women voters and said that the electoral process is marching towards more inclusivity. He also called for biometric authentication at polling booths to efficiently tackle impersonation and said that online reporting of political party expenditures has begun and must be made mandatory for better financial transparency and analytics. He also stated that unregulated social media algorithms pose a serious risk to elections worldwide and must be addressed urgently. Kumar further added that India’s expertise in electoral management is one of the biggest soft power of the country. The Election Commissioners, Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu conveyed their appreciation for the inclusive, transformative and purpose-driven leadership of Kumar. CEC Kumar’s tenure was marked by a slew of electoral reforms, including operationalising four qualifying dates for voter registration with an advanced application facility for 17+ youngsters; simplified forms for voter registration; redefining electoral boundaries with delimitation in Assam; and ensuring voting by polling personnel at the Voter Facilitation Centre to avoid any intimidation, delays and wrong-doing. These initiatives were aimed at empowering every eligible citizen while modernising election administration. According to the Commission, Kumar also championed technologydriven electoral reforms to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility. Under his leadership, ERONET 2.0, managing the largest electoral databases, strengthened voter roll management with multilayered security, and seamless, and real-time application processing. Kumar’s contributions were both systemic and profoundly human. His hands-on leadership was evident in his actions. On the global stage, his efforts amplified India’s voice in advancing democratic values, with the Election Commission spearheading ‘Cohort on Election Integrity’ and training officials from many election management bodies. He said that the administration attempted to control the crowd, but people didn’t listen. Speaking to ANI, Ajit said, “We have a tri-service office at the railway station. When I was returning after my duty, I couldn’t go as there was a huge crowd... I tried to convince people and also made announcements appealing to people to avoid gathering on the platform in large numbers. The administration was working hard to prevent any mishap, but no one was listening... I also helped the injured people with the help of one of my friends,” he told ANI. A tragic stampede occurred at New Delhi Railway Station, resulting in the loss of 15 lives on Saturday. The incident happened around 10 pm when thousands of devotees were heading to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh 2025 festival, causing severe overcrowding at the station.Another eyewitness recounted the horror, saying that the crowd was beyond the limit. People from the administration and even NDRF personnel were there, but when the crowd exceeded the limit, it wasn’t possible to control them. “The crowd was beyond the limit, people were gathered at the (foot over) bridge... Such a huge crowd wasn’t expected. I have never seen such a massive crowd at the railway station, even during the festivals. People from the administration and even NDRF personnel were there, but when the crowd exceeded the limit, it wasn’t possible to control them,” he said. One of the victim’s brothers Sanjay at LNJP hospital, who lost his sister in the stampede, said, “We were 12 people going to Mahakumbh. We hadn’t even reached the platform but were at the stairs... My family, including my sister, were stuck in the crowd. We found her after half an hour, and by the time she was dead.” A n o t h e r eyewitness described the chaos, stating that the crowd came from both sides after an announcement about a train platform change, leading to the stampede. “There was no one to control the crowd... It was announced that the train coming on platform number 12 would come on platform number 16. So the crowd came from both sides and a stampede occurred...some people were taken to the hospital...,” he said. Delays in train departures and the sale of around 1,500 general tickets exacerbated the situation and contributed to the overwhelming crowd. Among the affected passengers, Pappu, a resident of Bihar’s Patna, shared his grief, saying, “My mother died in the stampede. We were on our way home.” N D R F Commandant Daulat Ram Chaudhary confirmed that the situation was now under control. “... The situation is under control now. The injured have been evacuated...We received information about a stampede at platform no. 14 at the station... We are carrying out the rescue operations...” DCP Railway KPS Malhotra stated that while the authorities had anticipated a large crowd, the incident unfolded within moments. “We expected the crowd, but it all happened in a fraction of time, and hence this situation occurred. The factfinding will be done by the Railways... After inquiry, we will get to know the reason behind the incident,” he told ANI. Meanwhile, the Railway Board, on Sunday, informed that a two-member high-level committee had been formed to investigate the matter and determine the cause of the stampede at New Delhi railway station on Saturday, which claimed around 15 lives. “A two-member highlevel committee has been formed to investigate the matter... The situation is under control, and the passengers have been sent by special train... Train movement at the railway station is normal now,” Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information & Publicity (ED/IP), Railway Board. According to Kumar, the station was experiencing an unusually high volume of passengers, prompting the railways to operate four additional special trains to manage the crowd. Unfortunately, the large number of passengers led to a chaotic situation, with reports of people fainting and being hospitalized. To regain control of the situation, entry to the railway station was temporarily blocked. “The number of passengers was relatively very high today at the New Delhi railway station, and so we ran four more special trains. We received information that a few people fainted – they have been admitted to a local hospital. We blocked entry to the railway station for a while, but the situation is under control now,” added Kumar.
