The spokesperson emphasised that the actions taken send a “clear message that illegal migration is not worth the risk.” “I have received a number of inquiries on the report of a deportation flight to India. I can’t share any details on those inquiries, but I can share, on the record, that the United States is vigorously enforcing its border, tightening immigration laws, and removing illegal migrants. These actions send a clear message: illegal migration is not worth the risk,” a US Embassy spokesperson said. On January 24, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had stated that it would facilitate the return of Indian nationals “overstaying” or residing without proper documentation in the United States or “anywhere in the world.” Sitharaman emphasized the budget’s core objectives: workforce with meaningful employment •70% women’s participation in the economy Strengthening agriculture to establish India as the “food basket of the world” The budget paves a clear path for India’s growth, prioritizing economic empowerment, industrial progress, and societal well-being. February 7, 2025, 2025 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK ‘Make In India’ has failed to revive production, India has opportunity with revolution in energy and mobility: Rahul Gandhi New Delhi [India], February 3 (ANI): Noting that production is the foundation of India’s national security and is key to job creation, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday alleged that the Modi government’s ‘Make In India’ initiative has failed to revive it. He stated that the share of manufacturing in GDP has come down from 15.3 percent in 2014 to 12.6 percent, which is the lowest in the past 60 years. Taking part in the motion of thanks on the President’s Address, Gandhi, who is the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, pitched for caste census and said applying AI to it would lead to a lot of possibilities. Gandhi, who spoke in detail on the need to boost manufacturing, also discussed competition from China and highlighted India’s opportunity in the revolution in energy and mobility. He pointed out that China has been working on batteries, robots, motors, and optics for the last ten years, gaining at least a ten-year lead on India in this space. “As the world stands on the brink of a technological and economic revolution, India needs a new vision for growth, production, and participation—one that directly addresses our two biggest challenges: the job crisis and the lack of opportunity for 90 percent of Indians,” Gandhi posted on X later. “Jobs come from production, which ‘Make In India’ has failed to revive. But we have an opportunity with the revolution in energy and mobility—with renewable energy, batteries, electric motors, optics, and AI to bring these together. India must master a central role in this revolution and boost production to give our youth hope for the future,” he said. “Although China is 10 years ahead, we can catch up—with the right vision. An INDIA government would realign education, enlist experts, widely spread finance, and align our trade and foreign policies. Production is also the foundation of our national security. In a world where wars are not fought between armies but between industrial systems, our dependence on Chinese imports like motors and batteries puts us at risk,” he added. Gandhi further emphasized that India is fighting against inequality, which is increasing social tensions by excluding 90 percent of the population. “We must conduct a caste census to understand where Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs, and minorities stand today; and with the help of AI, understand how best to ensure they have a fair share in the nation’s wealth and opportunities. It is only these two tracks in parallel—production and participation—that will create a robust growth story for India and a bright future for all our youth,” he said. Slamming the government over the President’s address, Gandhi noted that it was the same laundry list of things that the government has done. He mentioned that there are four key technologies driving change in mobility: electric motors, batteries, optics, and AI. Gandhi questioned how an address from the “INDIA Gathbandhan” government would differ. “What type of address would an INDIA Gathbandhan government deliver, how would that address be different than the current one?” he said. He continued, “A universal problem that we have faced is that we have not been able to tackle the problem of unemployment. No! Neither the UPA government nor today’s NDA government has given a clear-cut answer to the youth of India about employment. I don’t think anybody in this room will disagree with me.” He explained that any country organizes two things: consumption and production. “The modern way of organizing consumption is through services, while organizing production is through manufacturing. But there is more to production than simply manufacturing—for example, agriculture is also about production.” G a n d h i criticized the handling of production since 1990. “Every government has done a decent job with consumption, but we have handed over the organization of production to the Chinese. For instance, even though we say we make this mobile phone in India, the reality is that it is assembled here, but the components are made in China. The network that supports this phone is owned by China.” He stressed that India must focus on production. “If we do not focus on production and continue to only focus on consumption, we will find ourselves running huge deficits, increasing inequality, and facing serious social problems due to unemployment. The numbers for internal security and police forces are spiraling, and social tensions are rising in India,” he added. Gandhi described the ongoing global transformation, saying the world is moving away from the internal combustion engine to electric motors, from petrol to batteries, and embracing renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and potentially nuclear energy. “This change will affect everything— warfare, medical treatment, education, how we eat, and much more.” He pointed out that the revolution now in progress is as significant as the computer revolution. “I want the youngsters in this country to think about this. The war in Ukraine is actually a battle between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor. The electric motor is inside the drone, and the engine is in the tank. Drones with electric motors and small batteries are destroying tanks and artillery.” He elaborated further: “The revolution is driven by four technologies—electric motors, batteries, optics, and AI. AI alone is meaningless; it operates on top of data.” Gandhi raised concerns about India’s lack of production and consumption data, both of which are crucial for AI. “Today, every piece of data used to make electronic products is owned by China. In India, consumption data is owned by companies like Google, Facebook, and Instagram, and we have no production data of our own.” He argued that India must start building its own production network and teach children about electric motors, batteries, drones, and robots. “China has been working on these technologies for the last ten years, and we are behind. To catch up, we must choose critical areas in these technologies and build capabilities in them.” Gandhi concluded by stressing that the banking system must not be dominated by a few companies but should be open and accessible to small and medium businesses and entrepreneurs who want to take part in this revolution. SC says Mahakumbh stampede unfortunate; refuses to entertain PIL for safety measures ` New Delhi [India], February 3 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday said that the stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Uttar Pradesh‘s Prayagraj was an “unfortunate incident” but refused to entertain a PIL seeking directions to put in place safety measures and guidelines for pilgrims from across the country. A bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and PV Sanjay Kumar said, “It is an unfortunate incident and it is something of concern, but move the High Court.” Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government said that a judicial commission has already been constituted to probe the incident. Rohatgi said a similar petition has already been filed in the Allahabad High Court. The bench asked the lawyer to approach the High Court with his plea. The petition sought direction that VIP movement shall not affect or create a danger to the common devotees’ safety and maximum space for entry and exit of devotees at Maha Kumbh shall be provided. The PIL filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari also sought direction from the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a status report on the MahaKumbh 2025 stampede incident that took place on January 29. The plea also directs to initiate legal action against the persons, authorities and officials for their negligent conduct. “Direct the state of Uttar Pradesh to submit a status report on the Maha Kumbh 2025 stampede incident that took place on January 29, 2025, and also direct to initiate legal action against the persons, authorities and officials for their negligent conduct,” stated the plea. The petition said that the stampede depicts the drastic condition and fate of people due to the lapses, negligence and utter failure of administration purported by the government authorities. At least 30 people died and over 60 were injured in the stampede that broke out in the Sangam area of Maha Kumbh in the early morning of January 29. It also sought directions to all states to their facilitation centres at Prayagraj to provide basic information regarding the safety measures and guidelines to the pilgrims. There should be arrangements to have announcements, display boards showing directions, roads etc. in other languages so that people from other states do not face problems and can get help easily, it said. “All the state governments shall also arrange electronic mode messages to send the message SMS, WhatsApp message of basic guidelines and safety measures to be followed by the devotees, so that easily people may get information. States governments with coordination of Uttar Pradesh government shall also deploy its small medical team at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh comprising of doctors and nurses so that at the time of medical emergency there may not be a shortage of medical staff,” the plea added. February 7, 2025, 2025 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK United States: Biden-appointed CFPB Director Rohit Chopra fired, cutting short five-year term Washington DC [US], February 1 (ANI): United States’ Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Rohit Chopra was fired on Saturday, cutting short his five-year term that was set to run through late 2026, The New York Times reported. Chopra, who had been leading the CFPB since 2021, expressed gratitude for his tenure, highlighting the agency’s efforts to hold financial institutions accountable and protect consumers. The CFPB is a unit of the Federal Reserve System charged with protecting families and honest businesses from illegal practices by financial institutions, and ensuring that markets for consumer financial products and services are fair, transparent, and competitive. Sharing a post on X, Chopra wrote, “It’s been an honour serving as your @CFPB Director. Every day, Americans from across the country shared their ideas and experiences with us. You helped us hold powerful companies & their executives accountable for breaking the law, and you made our work better.” In a letter to President Donald Trump, Chopra wrote, “It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation since 2021, as well as to serve as a Commissioner on the Federal Trade Commission from 2018 to 2021. I am grateful to both President Biden and you for nominating me and to the United States Senate for confirming me to these positions.” “The global financial crisis that erupted in 2008 didn’t just destroy trillions of dollars of family wealth. It also made Americans question whether regulators and law enforcement would hold companies and their executives accountable for their mismanagement or wrongdoing... I am proud that the CFPB has done so much to restore the rule of law. Since 2021, we have returned billions of dollars from repeat offenders and other bad actors, implemented dormant legal authorities and longoverdue rules required by law, and given more freedom and bargaining leverage to families navigating a complex and confusing financial system,” the letter added. Notably, in 2018, Chopra was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a Commissioner on the Federal Trade Commission, where he served until assuming office as CFPB Director. During his tenure at the FTC, he successfully worked to strengthen sanctions against repeat offenders, to reverse the agency’s reliance on no-money, nofault settlements in fraud cases, and to halt abuses of small businesses. He also led efforts to revitalize dormant authorities, such as those to protect the Made in USA label and to promote competition. Chopra previously served at the CFPB from 2010 to 2015. In 2011, the Secretary of the Treasury designated him as the agency’s student loan ombudsman, where he led the Bureau’s efforts on student lending issues. Prior to his government service, Chopra worked at McKinsey & Company, the global management consultancy, where he worked in the financial services, health care, and consumer technology sectors, according to CFPB. Chopra holds a BA from Harvard University and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. (ANI) professionals. Kerala: SIT files chargesheet Haryana: 6 dead, several against Malayalam actor and MLA missing after vehicle plunges Mukesh in sexual assault case into canal in Fatehabad; search ops underway Ernakulam (Kerala) [India], February 2 (ANI): The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Sunday confirmed that it has filed a chargesheet in an alleged rape case against CPI (M) MLA and actor M Mukesh. The chargesheet filed at the Ernakulam Judicial Magistrate Court claims that there is digital evidence against Mukesh in the case. WhatsApp chats and email messages between Mukesh and the complainant have been submitted as evidence. The SIT also stated that it has received circumstantial evidence and witness statements. In addition to harassment, a section of sexual assault has also been charged against Mukesh. The case is that Mukesh sexually assaulted the complainant by promising her membership in The Malayalam film star organization AMMA. Mukesh was booked on the complaint of actress Minu Muneer. The case was registered by Maradu police on the complaint of the Aluva native. The First Information Report against Mukesh was filed under Section 376 (rape), which is a non-bailable offence, Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), and 509 (insult the modesty of a woman by word, sound, gesture or object) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Last year in August, the lawyer of Malayalam actor-politician Mukesh said that his client is ready to cooperate with the police investigation in the case registered against him in connection with sexual harassment allegations levelled by a woman actor. The lawyer, Geo Paul, has also stated that the investigation team must collect as much evidence as possible, and if the allegations are found to be false, the police can file a refer report. A redacted version of the Justice Hema Committee report on harassment faced by women in the Malayalam cinema industry was made public last year. It contains shocking accounts alleging harassment, exploitation, and ill-treatment of women

(ANI) Budget 2025: One crore middle-income taxpayers to be out of tax net with raised exemption limit New Delhi [India], February 1 (ANI): One crore middle-income Indian taxpayers will be out of tax net according to announcements in the Union Budget 2025 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday. “One crore people will pay no tax,” the Finance Minister told reporters at a postBudget press conference. She was answering a query about the number of people who will be out of the tax net with the new proposals. “It’s a very responsive government. And as a result, the income tax simplification, which I announced in July, is already completed in its works, and we shall bring the bill next week. So the income tax simplification, about which in July budget I have gone in detail and the work is completed in six months, Within six months, we have brought the bill. It will be coming in the Parliament next week,” she said. Sitharaman, during her Union Budget 2025 speech, announced that no income tax will be payable on income up to Rs 12 lakh, providing significant relief to taxpayers, especially the middle class. Earlier, this limit was Rs 7 lakh. This limit will be Rs 12.75 lakh rupees for salaried taxpayers counting Rs 75,000 of standard deduction. She also stated that the new income tax regime will be simpler, with a special focus on benefiting the middle class. In 2014, the limit was Rs 2.2 lakh, in 2014 it became Rs 2.5 lakh, in 2019 it became Rs 5 lakh, and later Rs 7 lakh. “Now it being raised to Rs 12 lakh,” said Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey during the presser, reaffirming that middle-income taxpayers would benefit from it. As a result of these tax relief proposals, the government will forego revenue of about Rs 1 lakh crore in direct taxes and Rs 2600 crore in indirect taxes. The government expects that taxpayers saving money through lesser income tax will plough it back in the economy in form of either consumption, savings or investments. In July 2024 Budget, the government had proposed a comprehensive review of the Income-tax Act, 1961. The purpose was to make the Act concise and lucid and reduce disputes and litigation.
