November 5: In a historic turn of events, President Donald J. Trump stormed back to power for a second time defeating his Democratic challenger Kamala Harris. President Trump received 277 electoral college votes while Kamala Harris received 226. Trump is leading Harris by 2-3 points in other states like Michigan, Arizona, Nevada and Alaska, which are yet to declare their final results. Trump also won the popular vote, which is a first in 20 years for a Republican presidential candidate, after George W. Bush won both the Electoral College and Popular votes in 2004. Trump won 51% (72 million) to 47.5% (67 Million) won by Kamala Harris. The election was not result was not decided by a razor thin margin as most of the media establishment projected but a landslide for Trump and the Republican party which has been provided and mandate to govern the Remember: country for the next four years. Soon after the news of his victory broke out, Trump addressed his supporters, thanking them for their support in hiring him to be the 47th president of the United States. “This campaign was so historic in so many ways ...that will allow us to ‘Make America Great Again. Many people have told me that God spared my life for a reason, and that reason was to save our country and restore America to greatness and now we are going to fulfill the mission together... It is time to put the divisions of the past 4 years behind and it is time to unite and I will not let you down. America’s future will be bigger, better, bolder, richer, safer and stronger than ever before.” The mood in the Kamala Harris watch party at the Howard University in Washington DC (her Alma Mater) was sombre. Initially there were great expectations, with dancing and music, but as the night dragged on with no hope of a turnaround of positive outcome, Kamala announced that she would “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in –Jesus Christ heaven.” not be meeting with the team until the following day, the party slowly left the arena. Harris is expected to deliver her concession speech anytime Wednesday evening. This is the greatest comeback of all time. First time in 80 years that a president who lost his second run for the office has returned to power in his third attempt after Grover Cleveland who served as the US 22nd President 1884 and as the 24th President in 1892. Trump will be the second president to serve a non-consecutive term. Trump who served as the 45th President would now serve a second term as the 47th President of the United States. The failure of the current administration’s economic policies which caused severe inflation, higher gas prices and extremely high credit card interest rates which is 32% percent annually, has affected the pocket books of the common man. The surge in mortgage to 7 and 8 percent have negatively impacted the younger generation of realizing the American dream of purchasing a home beyond their reach. Trump’s victory is a severe blow to the permanent political class in Washington DC, who attempted to thwart his return to the White House by throwing a wrench at every move he made. With multiple court cases in Georgia, Washington D.C, Florida and New York, both civil and criminal, aimed at draining him financially and to destroy his reputation, did not discourage him but emboldened him to fight with grit and determination. Two assassination attempts and several other attempts which did not capture media attention nor attract publicity, it was a race most of his foes attempted to thwart using all the forces of the state, the media and the judiciary. No one would have survived such attacks and come back alive. After dodging the assassin’s bullet he rose upon his feet with the American flag waving at the background, pumped his fist up in the air screaming “fight, fight, fight”. It was a determination to save the country from further deterioration and to end the global conflicts such as the ones raging among Ukraine and Russia and Israel and Palestine in the Middle East. It is also a sound repudiation of the US Media establishments who rush to run negative stories about Trump without any due diligence to confirm the veracity of the news they publish. and never bothered to correct, even when they were proven wrong. According to reliable reports, the US media establishments relentlessly attacked the Trump campaign with 95% negative coverage while providing 90% positive coverage for the Harris’s Campaign. The media is now proven wrong which evidently establishes that their 24/7 attempt to malign his reputation had minimal effect on him. All the major news outlets in the US Media landscape, whom Trump collectively branded as the “Fake News Media” proved that Trump was right, and that they represent no truth but are the purveyors of the establishment narratives. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Donald Trump on his historic election victory in the United States presidential polls. In a post on social media platform, X, PM Modi wrote, “Heartiest congratulations my friend @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory”. PM expressed confidence in taking the Indo-US ties forward to greater heights as Trump would take over for his second term. PM Modi also said, “As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership. Together, let’s work for the betterment of our people and to promote global peace, stability and prosperity”. PM Modi and Donald Trump share warm and friendly ties. Events such as ‘Howdy Modi!’ held in the US in 2019 when Donald Trump was serving as the President showed the positive sentiment shared by the two leaders. On his trip to India in 2020, the ‘Namaste Trump’ event saw resounding public appreciation. The two leaders have held positive deliberations and met several times to give a boost to the India-US ties. The former deputy NSA noted the scale of the shift, noting that the election had been a significant turning point in both domestic and international contexts. Saran highlighted that despite projections showing that it could have been a neck-to-neck battle between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate as well as President Designate Donald Trump in this election, there was a complete Republican sweep in both electoral college and popular votes. He pointed out that the Republican Party’s performance had surpassed expectations, with key battleground states, such as Pennsylvania and Georgia, swinging in their favour. He further remarked that this outcome marks a substantial victory for Trump, with widespread support for his candidacy across multiple demographics. “It is a historic result and one of the most consequential in contemporary history because there was so much at stake. So I think as far as the result and the domestics of the result are concerned, obviously, all the projections proved to be wrong because almost everyone was predicting a neck-to-neck battle,” Saran said. But what we are seeing is almost a complete Republican sweep of the electoral college and the popular vote; you’re seeing the big states of Pennsylvania and Georgia going to the Republicans. The Democrats have not been able to rest any particular state from the Republicans. So internally, I think, it’s a massive vote in favour of Trump. And that’s quite remarkable. In terms of international implications, they are also equally significant; they are going to be very serious and they are going to have a major impact on the international situation,” he added. In terms of international implications, Saran noted that Trump‘s win could lead to substantial changes in foreign policy, particularly regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Middle East. “When you look at the Russia-Ukraine war, Trump has said repeatedly that he will solve it within 24 hours. He’ll put a stop to the war. So I think we are in for very huge changes on the Ukraine issue,” Saran stated, suggesting that the international community could see a shift in how the war is approached under a second Trump administration. On the issues in the Middle East, Saran indicated that Trump‘s past support for Israel would likely continue and suggested that the situation could become more challenging for Iran. “On the Gaza and the Israel conflict, again, he has not been very vocal, but his support for Israel has been there. I think Iran is going to feel the heat with the Trump administration. But Israel is definitely going to feel more secure. The amazing thing is even a state like Michigan, which had a large Arab population, which should have gone to the Democrats, has been won by the Republicans. So I think there was a lot of anger against Biden also,” Saran said. A d d i t i o n a l l y, Saran stated that the outcome of the election could bring shifts in the dynamics of US relations with China, with China watching Trump‘s return to power with caution, given his earlier policies on tariffs and trade. “The third, I think, actor who’s really watching this very carefully are the Chinese. And I think it’s very clear that the Chinese are going to be a little nervous because of Trump‘s record in his first presidency and what he has been saying about China, particularly on tariffs,” he added. Donald Trump has officially won the US Presidential Election, becoming the 47th US President after he crossed the 270-majority mark with his win in the battleground state of Wisconsin. According to CNN, this will take his tally to 276 electoral college votes, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in the process, as counting continues for the rest of the states. Trump had already won in key battleground states of Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia in a historic political comeback, recapturing the White House following an election loss in 2020. Notably, this is going to be only the second instance of a president serving two nonconsecutive terms in the White House. (ANI)

NOVEMBER 8, 2024 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK “Disengagement chapter done; de-escalation at LAC awaits”: EAM Jaishankar on post-disengagement relations with China C a n b e r r a [Australia], November 5 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the “disengagement chapter” between India and China over the troop deployment issue near the Depsang and Demchok areas in Eastern Ladakh along the Line of Actual Control was done and only the de-escalation part remained to be addressed by the two nations. Speaking at the inaugural session of ‘Raisina Down Under’ in Canberra, Australia, on Tuesday, the EAM addressed the ongoing complexities in the relationship between India and China and reiterated the disengagement agreement between the two countries on October 21, which saw a successful resolution of issues along the LAC. Jaishankar said that the issue had a profound effect on IndiaChina relations, as peace and tranquillity along the LAC had been seen as a prerequisite for broader bilateral cooperation. He noted that the disruptions had led to the scaling back of bilateral ties between the two nations. “The disengagement chapter has been done... the part that awaits us is de-escalation, which is the build-up of forces along LAC... During the period, our relationship was also profoundly affected because it has always been an assumption on our side that peace and tranquillity were a prerequisite for the development of our ties and since peace and tranquillity were disrupted, our relation with China has cut back in different ways,” he said. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih asked the Delhi government to file an affidavit on the steps taken to ensure that pollution is tackled and to enforce the firecracker ban in the city. The bench observed that there are widespread reports in newspapers that the ban on firecrackers was not implemented and said it wanted the Delhi government to immediately respond as to why the firecrackers ban was hardly implemented. “We want the Delhi government to immediately respond as to why this has happened. We will simultaneously issue notice to the Delhi Police Commissioner as to why there is noncompliance. We have to hear this immediately. The real problem is that this is all under the Air Prevention Act, 1981, which after amendment this year, has only penalty provisions,” observed the bench. It further directed the Delhi government and the Police Commissioner of Delhi to file affidavits highlighting what steps they propose to take so that this thing does not happen next year. The bench also asked the Delhi government to consider implementing a perpetual firecracker ban in the national capital. “The affidavit by Delhi government and Police Commissioner to be filed in one week... In the meanwhile, Delhi government and other authorities must also take a call on the perpetual ban of these firecrackers,” it ordered. It also sought affidavits from the governments of Haryana and Punjab indicating the number of incidents of stubble burning during the last ten days of October. The top court was hearing a plea concerning air pollution in and around the national capital. During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Archana Pathak Dave also told the bench b that there was absolute non-compliance with firecrackers restrictions during Diwali this year and added that there is a report suggesting a huge increase in air pollution on the day of Diwali, with the pollution percentage rising from 10 per cent to 27 per cent. The entire globe is prioritizing this sector and striving to master it. “In such a competitive global scenario, it is very important for our country to establish a strong foothold in high-end technologies from the very beginning. This way, we can fully realize our potential and ensure their contribution to the nation’s progress. It is evident that institutions like yours (IIT Kanpur) will play a significant role in this direction,” the Defence Minister said. Rajnath Singh said IIT Kanpur is not an ordinary institution; rather, it is an academic engine in itself. “If IIT Kanpur puts in the effort, it can provide India with the dynamism needed in this competition.” Talking about the growing role of technology in the defense ecosystem, the Minister pointed towards the current “state of wars and conflicts around the world.” “You know that we are witnessing new forms of technology in these wars and conflicts. The use of various new technologies, such as drones, laser warfare, cyber warfare, precision-guided missiles, and hypersonic missiles, is increasing. This technologyoriented warfare has made conflicts even more lethal. The situation has reached a point where discussions about space warfare have also begun,” highlighted the Defence Minister. “Therefore, I believe we need to focus on the defense applications of these modern cutting-edge technologies. Due to some historical reasons, there has been a critical gap in this area, and it is essential for us to fill that gap as soon as possible,” Rajnath Singh focussed at the Foundation Day of IIT Kanpur. The Foundation Day of IIT Kanpur is celebrated on November 2 to mark the significant milestone in the institute’s journey since its establishment in 1959. IIT Kanpur was one of the first IITs to be set up in India, aimed at developing world-class engineers and scientists. Over the years, IIT Kanpur has emerged as a premier institution known for its cutting- edge research, innovative teaching methods, and strong emphasis on entrepreneurship. It has played a vital role in advancing technology and science in India, contributing significantly to various fields including engineering, management, and the humanities. The foundation day is an occasion to reflect on the institute’s achievements, honor its alumni who have made significant contributions across various sectors, and to celebrate its ongoing commitment to excellence in education and research. The event typically includes lectures, discussions, and cultural programs, bringing together faculty, students, and alumni to foster a sense of community and collaboration. (ANI)
