Chapter 1 - A Legacy

11:45 PM, December 17, 2156 C.E.

The year was 2156. It was not until midnight that the enslaved Americans got to go home. The dust was still settling after a revolution that destroyed the democratic government and created the first monarchy North America had ever seen. The war prisoners got to wake up at 6:00 AM, work for 18 hours, then sleep for the remaining 6, just to be ready for tomorrow's labor. All while being bored to death looking for a way out. Many escaped to Canada before the borders tightened their security, and everything went downhill. “Hey, Joe,” one worker yelled. “Yeah, Jackson?” Joe replied. Both had been stuck in this job for three weeks, but it felt as if they had been enslaved for life. They had a meal bar every day, enough to survive, and one glass of water. They were working on what seemed to be a palace for the soon-to-be king. “Come here, I might have figured something out,” Jackson whispered, completely changing his tone. Joe knew that usually meant something he was talking about was confidential or not to be heard by anyone else. Jackson motioned for Joe to cross the site from the rubble that once was the Capitol; a new era was about to begin. Jackson and Joe went way back. They met in grade school, in math class. They shared that as an interest. However, they both received a note, suspiciously at the same time, that they were not going to the University of Maryland, then Virginia, then UPenn, and before they knew it, their life dreams were cut off in only two weeks. They still had no clue why. Despite the terrible education experience, they both went on to get fit and successfully joined the military, right as the country needed it most, because of the growing threat of rebellion.

once was their home city: DC. Jackson motioned for Joe to come quicker. Joe ran, no, sprinted, careful not to look unordinary. Once Joe finally arrived from the super long 100-foot jog, man he had gotten out of shape, Jackson pointed to what would in a few days be the roof. Joe did not notice anything abnormal. So, Jackson explained what could not be seen: “Joe, there is a little less concrete holding this brick in place. I placed it. This is the throne room. Just enough that it will stay for 100 years, then, it will fall, and the 2-ton piece will crush the king, and the palace will collapse.” “How do you know that they won’t notice? Or remodel? Or maybe it will hit the wrong person. So many things can go wrong!” “I know, but this may be our only hope.” The two friends agreed that if they were caught, their lives could not get any worse, so they would take the risk. After doing their secret handshake they made up at 8, they went back to work. However, their break was a little too long. A guard came over, but was luckily not listening. “Hey! You two! You’ve still got 10 minutes until break!” Without any hesitation, two bullets ended the two boys’ lives. However, the guard walked away thinking that everything was fine, and did not notice the brick, just like Joe. The brick just sat there, patiently waiting to strike. The country’s legacy was set in stone.
