I accept your nomination for president of the United States of America,” Harris said to audience applause. Harris entered the fray for the presidential ticket after US President Joe Biden announced in July that he is withdrawing from the election bid. If elected president, the 59-year-old Harris would become the first woman in history to become the US president. The vicepresident is only the second woman ever nominated for the presidency by a major political party. Speaking on the final night of the Democratic National Convention,Harris said the election is “not only the most important in our lives but the most importatnt in the life of our nation.” She also spoke about the “serious consequences” of putting “unserious man” Donald Trump back in the White House. She promised to create an “opportunity economy where everybody will have a chance to compete and succeed” and also promised to end America’s housing shortage. During her acceptance speech, Harris spoke about her mother who migrated to the US from India, and talked about her upbringing as her parents moved around the country for various jobs, and the virtues they instilled in her. Haris said the upcoming polls provided the country with a “fleeting opportunity” to “move past the bitterness, cynicism and divisive battles of the past.” Harris said. “A chance to chart a new way forward. Not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans.”, “I accept your nomination to be President of the United States of America. August 30, 2024 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK US: Woman of Nepali origin gone missing, husband charged with concealment of wife’s body By Reena Bhardwaj Washington DC [US], August 24 (ANI): The husband of a 28-yearold Nepali American who has gone missing for more than three weeks has been charged in connection with her disappearance, police said. Mamta Kafle Bhatt was last seen in public July 27 and spoke to a friend the next day, according to the Manassas Park Police Department (MPPD). She was then last seen by her husband, Naresh Bhatt, on July 31, and was reported missing by her husband August 5. Evidence of pooling blood and missing knives were among the chilling details presented in court Friday as the husband of the missing woman faced a charge of concealing a dead body. The development has come as a shock for those who were hoping to find 28-year-old Mamta alive nearly a month after she was last seen by anybody except her husband. H o w e v e r , investigators have not called off the search for the mother of an 11-monthold who missed her baby’s first birthday this week. The couple’s daughter was placed in the care of the Department of Social Services following Naresh Bhatt’s arrest, police said. MPPD said Naresh Bhatt was arrested Thursday at his family home and was charged with concea Prosecutors said there is evidence of pooling blood in the primary bedroom of the home, then blood and blood splatter in the primary bathroom. They said investigators found indications that a body was dragged. While laying out its case, the prosecution said Naresh Bhatt changed his story numerous times about when he last saw his wife. Police say they have video showing Naresh Bhatt at a Walmart purchasing cleaning supplies.He also went to a Walmart in Prince William County and purchased a set of knives. Two of those knives are now missing, prosecutors said. Prosecutors said there’s evidence that Naresh Bhatt was in the process of packing up his home and selling his car. Passports for Bhatt and his daughter were in full view when police entered the home for a search. Seeking justice for Kafle Bhatt “is going to be a marathon,” Holly Wirth, a friend and former coworker of Kafle Bhatt’s, said outside the courthouse after the hearing. “What we heard was worse than we could have ever imagined. I have to give credit to the Commonwealth attorneys. She spoke as frankly as she could. But the details are absolutely shocking,” Wirth added. (ANI) Putin speaks to PM Modi, highlights Russia’s approach to resolving Ukraine conflict Moscow [Russia], August 27 (ANI): Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. During the talks, Putin highlighted Russia‘s approaches to resolving the conflict that is ongoing between Moscow and Kyiv. PM Modi informed Putin about his recent visit to Kyiv and stressed his commitment to bringing about a settlement for Ukraine by political and diplomatic means. Russia and Ukraine have engaged in a conflict for over twoand-a-half years. In a statement shared on Telegram, the Russian Embassy in India stated, “Vladimir Putin shared his principled assessment of the destructive policies of the Kyiv authorities and their Western patrons, and went on to highlight Russia‘s approaches to resolving this conflict.” The two leaders also discussed measures needed to implement trade and economic agreements resulting from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Russia in July. The two leaders agreed to continue their bilateral contacts at various levels. In the statement, the Russian Embassy in India stated, “They expressed satisfaction with the way the two countries have been working together within BRICS. Narendra Modi reaffirmed his readiness to take part in the October 2024 Kazan Summit, to be held as part of Russia‘s BRICS chairmanship.” During the telephone conversation, PM Modi shared insights from his recent visit to Ukraine and underlined the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to achieve an abiding and peaceful resolution to the conflict. PM recalled his successful visit to Russia last month to participate in the 22nd India–Russia Bilateral Summit. They also exchanged views on a range of regional and global issues of mutual interest. “The two leaders exchanged views on the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict. The PM shared insights from his recent visit to Ukraine. He underlined the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as well as sincere and practical engagement between all stakeholders to achieve an abiding and peaceful resolution of the conflict,” a PMO release said. “Spoke with President Putin today. Discussed measures to further strengthen Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Exchanged perspectives on the Russia– Ukraine conflict and my insights from the recent visit to Ukraine. Reiterated India‘s firm commitment to support an early, abiding and peaceful resolution of the conflict,” PM Modi said. The conversation took place days after PM Modi’s visit to Poland and Ukraine. PM Modi visited Ukraine on August 23, the first by an Indian PM to the European nation. During the bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, PM Modi emphasised India‘s position of peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. “India was never neutral, we have always been on the side of peace,” PM Modi told Zelenskyy. In a post on X, CM Mamata said that she is dedicating the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad to the victim of the incident. “Today, on the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, I am dedicating it to our sister, whom we mourned the tragic loss of at RG Kar Hospital a few days ago. Expressing our heartfelt condolences and seeking immediate redress for that incident. Our hearts go out to all the women of all ages who have been victims of inhuman incidents. Sorry,” she said in a post in Bengali. Meanwhile, the BJP has called 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh’ call in protest against police crackdown on peaceful protest during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ – march to the state secretariat on Tuesday. The rally termed “Nabanna Abhiyan” started from the College Square in the capital of West Bengal, amid heightened security around the West Bengal state secretariat with protestors gathering at the Santragachi area in Howrah. Later, the police hosed protestors with water cannons as they climbed atop police barricades, clashed with police personnel and broke the barricades at Santragachi in Howrah during the protest march. Protestors also dragged away police barricades and police resorted to opening lathicharge and lobbing tear gas shells to disperse them. Following the chaos, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) TMC listed “BJP‘s idea of a ‘peaceful protest’,” in a social media post in X, which includes stone pelting, pushing barricades, severely injuring the police, orchestrating extreme chaos and disrupting the law and order of the state. TMC further stated that the “Nabanna Abhiyan” was a conspiracy by the BJP and was “nothing short of a FATAL ATTACK on Bengal!” The rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital premises, sparked nationwide outrage and since then several protests have been staged demanding justice for the victim. The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the hosspital on August 9. (ANI Photo) Agartala (Tripura) [India], August 27 (ANI): Following continuous rainfall and unprecedented floods since August 19 in the state, 31 people have lost their lives, and over 72,000 people have been displaced so far, according to a press release by the State Relief, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Department on Tuesday. As per the press release, a total of 492 relief camps had been set up by the district administration, providing shelter to the people displaced by the floods. Clothing has also been distributed to about 300 needy people in Amarpur and Karbook SubDivision. As of today, six teams of the State Disaster Response Force and five teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are working on relief operations in Gomati and Sepahijala Districts. Today, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also chaired a review meeting for the current situation of floods in the state in the presence of the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, District Magistrates, Secretaries of all departments and Directors of key departments. The release further stated that the State Relief Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Department has provided Rs 69 crore to eight districts and Rs 5 crore each to the Agriculture and Power Department for the relief work. Tripura has experienced heavy and unprecedented rainfall from August 19 to August 23, causing massive floods and disrupting the flow of life in the state. There has been comparatively less rainfall since August 24 but the water level in the Gomati River at Sonamura is still above the critical level. On Monday, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced financial assistance of Rs 20 crore to Tripura. The Tripura government had also requested the central government to send an advance Inter-Ministerial Central Team to the state for an on-site assessment of the damage caused by recent floods in the state. (ANI) New Delhi [India], August 28 (ANI): Several parts of Delhi witnessed waterlogging on Wednesday morning after spells of heavy rain lashed the capital city. Visuals from the Mehrauli-Gurgaon road show vehicles wading through the waterlogged roads amid traffic congestion. The waterlogging in the area has slowed down the traffic in the area. Delhi and NCR (National Capital Region) received incessant rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning beginning in the early hours of Wednesday. Visuals from Delhi Gate show vehicles wading through the waterlogged road. Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre of New Delhi has issued a yellow alert for the national capital for today. Earlier on Tuesday, the Delhi traffic police issued a traffic advisory for commuters who are travelling towards Crown Plaza, Road no 13. Due to waterlogging at the Okhla Underpass, commuters might face traffic congestion in the area. “Traffic is affected in the carriageway from Road No. 13 towards Crown Plaza due to waterlogging at Okhla Underpass. Kindly plan your journey accordingly.”, read the traffic advisory on X. A d d i t i o n a l l y, another advisory posted on X by the Delhi traffic police also informed commuters of traffic being affected on Rohtak road from Nangloi towards Tikri Border and vice versa due to potholes and waterlogging, with commuters facing problems in wading through the water, and heavy vehicles, including buses, also facing difficulty crossing the road. “Traffic is affected on Rohtak Road in the carriageway from Nangloi towards Tikri Border and vice versa due to potholes and waterlogging. Kindly avoid Mundka and take an alternate route accordingly,” read the traffic advisory from Delhi Traffic Police. According to the Delhi Traffic Police, traffic was also affected on Mathura Road in the carriageway from Badarpur towards Sarita Vihar due to the uprooting of a tree near Mohan Estate Metro Station. Earlier on Tuesday, light rain lashed several parts of the national capital on the occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami. (ANI) M u m b a i (Maharashtra) [India], August 28 (ANI): The number of injured people during the Dahi Handi celebrations on the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami has risen to 238, according to reports by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other private hospitals on Wednesday. The earlier count of injured was 15. The Govindas are reportedly getting treatment for their injuries at the respective OPDs of various private hospitals. As per the report, 157 people have been discharged from various hospitals. Three people have been discharged from JJ Hospital, in St. George Hospital, one person has been discharged while two others are receiving treatment in OPD. Last year, during the Dahi Handi celebrations, as many as 195 Govindas were injured in different incidents. The BMC reported that out of the 195 Govindas, 18 were admitted to the hospital while the remaining 177 were discharged. One of the major cultural activities, Dahi Handi is celebrated by filling an earthen pot with curd, butter and other milk products. Subsequently, a group of people form a human pyramid to reach the matka and break it. The tradition symbolises Lord Krishna’s playfulness and innocence, as well as his love for butter and curd. Dahi Handi celebrations commemorate Lord Krishna’s act of eating Dahi hung at a height when he was a child. As per the Hindu calendar, Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born on the eighth day of the month of Bhadra. The day mostly falls in August or September as per the Western calendar. The festival of Janmashtami is celebrated by offering prayers to Lord Krishna, with beautifully decorated swings, dance and music performances along with the Dahi Handi competition. FRIDAY AUGUST 30, 2024 9 President Biden commends PM Modi’s Ukraine visit for his message of peace Washington DC [US], August 27 (ANI): US President Joe Biden, during his telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra, commended the latter’s “historic visits” to Poland and Ukraine as well as his message of peace, the White House said in a statement. The two leaders discussed PM Modi’s trip to two European nations and the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meetings in September. “The President commended the Prime Minister for his historic visits to Poland and Ukraine, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in decades, and for his message of peace and ongoing humanitarian support for Ukraine, including its energy sector,” the statement read. PM Modi and President Biden affirmed their continued support for a “peaceful resolution” of the conflict “in accordance with international law, on the basis of the UN Charter.” The leaders also emphasised their continued commitment to work together, including through regional groups like the Quad, to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. Earlier, the Prime Minister’s Office said that Prime Minister Modi briefed Biden on his recent visit to Ukraine and reiterated India’s consistent position in favour of dialogue and diplomacy. PM Modi and Biden held discussions on various regional and global issues. The two leaders reiterated their commitment to further strengthen the cooperation in multilateral fora, including the Quad. “While discussing the situation in Ukraine, the Prime Minister briefed President Biden on his recent visit to Ukraine. He reiterated India’s consistent position in favour of dialogue and diplomacy and expressed full support for early return of peace and stability,” the statement read. The conversation took place days after PM Modi’s visit to Poland and Ukraine. PM Modi visited Ukraine on Friday last, the first by an Indian PM to the European nation. During the bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, PM Modi emphasised India’s position of peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. “India was never neutral, we have always been on the side of peace,” PM Modi told Zelenskyy. He said that India was ready to play an active role in the path to peace and progress. Russia and Ukraine have been engaged in war since 2022. India has always advocated “peace and diplomacy” for resolving the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Later on Monday (local time), the White House said they discussed peace prospects “in accordance with President Zelenskyy’s plan for a just peace.” White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby reiterated that Washington would welcome any country that wants to help President Zelenskyy work towards just peace. “Any country that’s willing to come at that discussion by starting with President Zelenskyy’s perspective, by hearing him out, by signing on to that proposal — and I won’t speak for India and what they’re signing on to or not; that’s for the Prime Minister and his team to talk to — but we certainly welcome any nation that is willing to be helpful and to start that conversation by ascribing to President Zelenskyy’s just peace proposal and getting his perspectives,” Kirby said at the briefing. Taking to X following the conversation, PM Modi stated, “Spoke to @POTUS @JoeBiden on phone today. We had a detailed exchange of views on various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine. I reiterated India’s full support for early return of peace and stability.” PM Modi appreciated Biden’s deep commitment to the IndiaUS Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The leaders reviewed the significant progress in bilateral ties and highlighted that the IndiaUS partnership is aimed at benefiting the people of both countries as well as the entire humanity. During the telephone conversation, the two leaders also expressed their shared concern over the situation in Bangladesh. (ANI)
