(ANI) Congress declares Rahul Gandhi to be Leader of Opposition in 18th Lok Sabha New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): Congress on Tuesday declared that Rahul Gandhi, party’s MP from Raebareli will be Leader of the Opposition in the 18th Lok Sabha, ending the 10-year spell of no LoP in the Lower House since 2014. “Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has been appointed as the LoP in the Lok Sabha..” Venugopal said while addressing the media here in the national capital. Notably, Lok Sabha did not have Leader of Opposition in the last 10 years because no political party, other than the ruling party, was able to secure the minimum Lok Sabha seats required to nominate a Leader of the Opposition. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, the Congress emerged as the second-largest party with 52 seats. This was three short of the requisite numbers. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress, again the second largest party, won 44 Lok Sabha seats — way below the mark. After the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls, the Congress emerged as the second-largest party in the election and improved its tally to 100, from 52 in the 2019 Lok Sabha Remember: Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” –Jesus Christ poll. The total tally of the INDIA bloc stood at 234. The announcement of Rahul Gandhi as LoP comes a day before the election for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. Rahul Gandhi won from both Raebareli and Wayanad Lok Sabha constituencies in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls. While Rahul Gandhi won with a margin of 364422 votes from Wayanad defeating Communist Party of India’s Annie Raja, in Raebareli, he won with a margin of 390030 votes from Raebareli defeating Bharatiya Janata Party’s Dinesh Pratap Singh. However, after Rahul Gandhi announced that he would resign as an MP from Wayanad and will keep the Raebareli constituency, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced Priyanka Gandhi’s candidature from Wayanad last week. If Priyanka Gandhi wins from Wayanad, three members of the NehruGandhi family will be in Parliament – Sonia Gandhi in Rajya Sabha and Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. The motion moved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and seconded by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was adopted by the house through a voice vote. The house echoed with ‘Ayes’ and ‘Noes’ and the pro-tem speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab declared Om Birla as the Speaker of the lower house. The opposition which had filed K Suresh as the Speaker candidate of the INDIA bloc did not press for a division vote. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also extended wishes to Birla and accompanied him to the chair along with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and PM Modi. After the INDIA bloc fielded K Suresh as its candidate, the appointment of Speaker became interesting as the election was held for the first time in decades. Traditionally, the Lok Sabha Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected through consensus between the ruling party and the Opposition. The contest between BJP‘s Om Birla, a three-time MP from Kota in Rajasthan, and Kodikunnil Suresh, an eight-term parliamentarian from Kerala’s Mavelikara came after the NDA refused to accept the opposition INDIA bloc‘s demand that the Deputy Speaker’s position be left for the Opposition in exchange for its support to the NDA nominee. The NDA, which commands 293 MPs in the 543-member Lok Sabha, was able to demonstrate its clear majority to ensure that Om Birla returns to the chair he held in the 17th Lok Sabha. The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began on June 24 and will conclude on July 3. The 264th Session of Rajya Sabha will commence on June 27 and conclude on July 3. On June 27, President Murmu is scheduled to address a joint sitting of both houses of Parliament. (ANI)

He emphasised the historic contributions of women diplomats who have shattered barriers and enriched multilateralism throughout history. Speaking passionately about Hansa Mehta‘s influence, Francis posed a poignant question: “Would the Universal Declaration of Human Rights be truly universal today if Hansa Mehta had not insisted its opening line be changed from “all men” to “all human beings” are born free and equal?” The UNGA President also reiterated the UN’s commitment to advancing gender T e h r i (Uttarakhand) [India], June 26 (ANI): A woman along with her two nieces were killed after a car driven by a government official ran over them in the Bourari area of Uttarakhand‘s Tehri district, said the police on Tuesday. (ANI) S u r g u j a (Chhattisgarh) [India], June 22 (ANI): Power tariff in Rajasthan will reduce once the state starts receiving 2022 racks of coal from the mine allocated to Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL) in Chhattisgarh, said the Minister of state for energy (independent charge) in Rajasthan Government, Hiralal Nagar. Currently, Rajasthan needs 20-22 racks and the state is receiving 9-10 racks, said Nagar, adding that efforts are on to increase the supply. Moreover, efforts are underway to ensure that two more coal blocks (Paras and Kanta Extension) allocated to the state should be handed over to it, the Kallakurichi (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 26 (ANI): A threemember delegation of the National Commission for Women, led by Khushbu Sundar, visited the families of victims who lost their lives by consuming illicit liquor in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district. The NCW had earlier taken suo motu cognizance of a media report on the deaths of people in the incident and constituted a three-member inquiry committee, led by NCW Member Khushbu Sundar, to look into the matter. As per it, the NCW delegation led by Khushbu Sundar has come to Kallakurichi district to inquire about the incident and to meet the family members of the persons who have died by drinking illicit liquor in Kallakurichi district. Khushbu Sundar said that she would submit the inquiry report tomorrow itself and again urged for a CBI investigation into the matter. “Everyone around this area knows that illicit liquor sales are taking place near the police station itself in the Kallakurichi district. Even though a lot of complaints have been raised and no action has been taken to date. When they knew illicit liquor sales were happening in Kallakurichi, why did they not take any action on it and why did they not stop it?” she said while talking to reporters after meeting with the victims’ families’. “Tamil Nadu Government has given Rs 10 lakhs to the families but that cannot fulfil their emotional needs when they have lost a family member. It’s a very big loss for them. What is this Rs 10 lakh going to do? Tomorrow I’m going to Delhi and will submit the report to the Commission. We are demanding a CBI inquiry but they are not doing it, after submitting the report, everything will be revealed,” she added. Also, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) earlier took cognizance of the case and issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Government of Tamil Nadu, calling for a detailed report within one week. The Commission observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of the right to life of the victims. Earlier in the day, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) Chairman Kishor Makwana, along with the Deputy Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Commission for Scheduled Castes (TNCSC) Puneeth Pandian and the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the National Aditya Vidarbha Commission Sanmeet Kaur, met the family members of the victims. The death toll in the hooch tragedy rose to 63 as per Kallakurich District Collectorate data on Wednesday evening. Currently, 88 people are undergoing treatment in total, out of which 47 are admitted to the Government Kallakurichi Medical College and Hospital and 63 have been discharged in total from the Government Kallakurichi Medical College, as per the hospital authorities. 9 people have been admitted to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) Puducherry and a total of six have been discharged from the hospital. Efforts are on to enhance the supply and ensure the handing over of two blocks (Parsa and Kanta Extention) to RVUNL. We will meet Chhattisgarh‘s CM and request the advancement of works regarding the handing over of two mines,” said Nagar. Handing over of the mines will enhance the supply and the company would receive 18 racks, he added. As RVUNL is receiving less coal from the mine (referring to PEKB), therefore we have to purchase coal from Coal India and it is costing 40 per cent more to us as well as 29 people are undergoing treatment at Salem Medical College, while 22 have passed away, as reported by hospital authorities. Two people are currently admitted to the Villupuram Medical College and two have been discharged from there. One person has been admitted to the Royapettah Greater Hospital in Chennai. Two people admitted to Sri Sanjeevi Hospital have been discharged. The total number of people affected by the consumption of illicit liquor has now increased to 225. The visit aims to get the two mines as soon as possible so that an increase of power production in Rajasthan can be ensured and the public gets relief from purchasing electricity at a higher price, the minister said. “During the visit, I have noticed better management of mine, which is being handled by MDO Adani Group. The group has been working with a fivestar rating for the last few years,” said Nagar. Moreover, the minister also praised the works done by the Adani Group in terms of forestation and appealed to other mine developers to follow the same for environment conservation. On the occasion, the minister inaugurated a 9-megawatt solar power park and dedicated dozer push machines for mining purposes. The mining area requires a 15-megawatt power supply and the 9megawatt solar power park will contribute to green energy, pointed Nagar. Speaking about the Dozer push machines, the minister said these machines will bring major transformation and also be helpful in contributing to the environment. This technique will be used in the country for the first time and going to bring fruitful results, Nagar said. (ANI)

FRIDAY JUNE 28, 2024 9 SALE ENDS JULY 30-2024 Govt to give top priority to welfare and development of state: Andhra CM Chittoor (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 26 (ANI): Asserting that the government’s priority will be to fulfil all the expectations and welfare of the people, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP chief, N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday said the development of the State will be taken on a very fast pace. As part of a two-day visit to his home constituency of Kuppam after assuming charge as the Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu visited the incomplete branch canal of the Handri-Neeva Srujala Sravanthi at Santhipuram of Chinnari Doddi. The Chief Minister paid rich tributes to the TDP founder, the Late NT Rama Rao. Later, addressing a public meeting, Chandrababu Naidu admitted that the new government is now facing several challenges and said that “despite all this, every step will be taken to take the State on a progressive path.” Terming the fiveyear YSRCP rule as a nightmare, Chandrababu said that corruption is rampant in every part of the State. “We will soon publish white papers on the sectors that have been affected severely and new passbooks for the farmers will be issued soon with official seal after deleting the photos of the YSRCP president, Jagan Mohan Reddy,” the Chief Minister told the people. Acknowledging that of the nine times that he has been elected to the Assembly, eight times he won the poll from Kuppam, the Chief Minister admitted that he has an eternal bond with the people of Kuppam. “If at all if there is any rebirth I like to be the son of this soil,” he added. Recalling that he had selected Kuppam only to develop the segment as it was a backward area, Chandrababu promised to transform Kuppam as the model Assembly segment in the country with a perfect action plan. The Chief Minister thanked the DWCRA groups for donating Rs 4.5 cr for building the capital. Chandrababu Naidu also assured the people of Kuppam that every step will be taken to complete the branch canal of HandriNeeva Srujala Sravanthi at the earliest possible to supply water to every acre in the area. “The previous government has distributed Rs 10 to each beneficiary of the welfare scheme but looted Rs 100 from each of them. But this Government will pay Rs 15 each and will show the way to earn Rs 100,” he added. Stating that the State government will take all possible steps to increase the living standards of everyone, Chandrababu recalled that of the seven Assembly segments in the Chittoor Lok Sabha constituency, the people totally elected the Alliance in all seven segments, which, he said is history. Chandrababu said that the majority of the candidates who were given the chance in the recent elections are highly educated while 17 newly-elected MLAs are provided the opportunity in the Cabinet. Observing that the TDP always encourages the youth and the weaker sections of society, Chandrababu Naidu said that as far as Kuppam is concerned everyone is his supporter and he supports everyone since he does not have any particular section here. Recalling how the previous government looted Kuppam, particularly the granite reserves here, he said that the local people were harassed by foisting false cases against them, particularly when he was planning his visit here. P r o m i s i n g Minimum Support Prices for all the farm products, especially the commercial crops, the Chief Minister assured them that all the necessary measures would be taken to increase the dairy products. “My life ambition is eliminating poverty. I will again form the Kuppam Area Development Authority,” he said. Promising to provide employment to the youth, the Chief Minister said that salary dues of Dravidian University staff members will be released soon. Chandrababu Naidu promised to transform Kuppam as an education hub and also complete all the pending projects in the constituency. Many local TDP leaders also extended donations for building the capital. (ANI)
