June 14, 2024 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK India successfully defend lowest total ever in T20 WC history with win over Pakistan New York [US], June 10 (ANI): Team India made history after their thrilling six-run win over Pakistan in their highoctane ICC T20 World Cup clash, becoming the team to have defended the lowest total ever in the tournament’s history. In the match, India managed to defend the target of 120 runs, restricting Pakistan to 113/7 at the completion of their 20 overs. Tied with Sri Lanka defending 120 runs against New Zealand by bundling them out for 60 runs in the 2014 T20 World Cup, India has defended the lowest total ever in the tournament history. Also, India has outdone themselves, successfully defending their lowest total in T20I cricket. Previously, the lowest total defended successfully by India in T20Is was a target of 139 runs against Zimbabwe in 2016, restricting them to 135/6 and winning by three runs. With this, India has secured their seventh win over Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup, having lost just one game, back in the 2021 edition at UAE by 10 wickets. After winning this thriller, India is at the top of Group A with two wins in two games and four points. Pakistan is in fourth place, having lost both their games to the USA and India. Their knockout stage chances look slim. Coming to the match, Pakistan won the toss and put India to bat first. However, the Indian batters did not get things going for them at this tough surface as star openers Virat Kohli (4) and Rohit Sharma (13) failed to score big. Rishabh Pant (42 in 31 balls, with six fours) seemed to be playing on a different pitch and had useful partnerships with Axar Patel (20 in 18 balls, with two fours and a six) and Suryakumar Yadav (seven in eight balls, with a four). However, the lower middle order crumbled under the pressure of scoring runs on such a tough pitch and India could make just 119 in 19 overs. Haris Rauf (3/21) and Naseem Shah (3/21) were the top bowlers for Pakistan. Mohammed Amir got two scalps while Shaheen Shah Afridi got one. In the run-chase, Pakistan took a more measured approach and Mohammed Rizwan (31 in 44 balls, with a four and six) held one end steady. However, Bumrah (3/14) and Hardik Pandya (2/24) got crucial wickets of skipper Babar Azam (13), Fakhar Zaman (13), Shadab Khan (4), Iftikhar Ahmed (5) as well, which kept the pressure intact on Pakistan. With 18 runs needed in final over, Naseem Shah (10*) tried to win it for Pakistan, however, Arshdeep Singh (1/31) made sure Pakistan fell short by six runs. Bumrah secured the ‘Player of the Match’ for his match-winning spell. Jasprit Bumrah becomes India’s third-highest T20I wicket-taker following masterclass against Pakistan Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah overtook all-rounder Hardik Pandya to become Men in Blue’s third-highest wicket-taker in T20I cricket. Bumrah accomplished this movement up in charts following India’s narrow six-run win over Pakistan in their ICC T20 World Cup clash at New York’s Nassau County International Stadium. In the game, Bumrah was at his most lethal, taking three wickets for just 14 runs in four overs at an economy rate of 3.50. Bumrah’s victims were the star opening pair of skipper Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed. In 64 T20Is, Bumrah has taken 79 wickets at an average of 18.67 and an economy rate of 6.44, with the best figures of 3/11. Hardik has 78 wickets in 94 T20Is with the best figures of 4/16. The leading wicket-taker for India in the T20I format is the spin veteran Yuzvendra Chahal, who has taken 96 wickets in 80 games at an average of 25.09 and an economy rate of 8.19, with the best figures of 6/25. In second place is India’s swing specialist, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has 90 wickets in 87 matches at an average of 23.10 and an economy rate of 6.96, with the best figures of 5/4. New Zealand’s pace veteran Tim Southee is the leading wicket-taker in T20I cricket, with 157 wickets in 123 matches at an average of 23.15 and an economy rate of 8.13, with the best figures of 5/13. Their knockout stage chances look slim. Bumrah secured the ‘Player of the Match’ for his match-winning spell. Following loss to India, Pakistan coach Kirsten admits team took excessive pressure during run-chase New York [US], June 10 (ANI): Following his side’s six-run loss to India in their ICC T20 World Cup match, Pakistan head coach Gary Kirsten admitted that the team put more pressure on themselves than they should have had and it was fun having a low-scoring thriller being played out in a format that is mostly about fours and sixes. Jasprit Bumrah’s miserly three-wicket haul which applied pressure on Pakistan batters and a counter-attacking, matchsaving knock by Rishabh Pant powered India to a narrow win at a packed Nassau County Stadium which keeps India’s World Cup dreams alive with two more group stage games to go. Speaking about the performance after the game in a post-match press conference, Kirsten said, “Pretty much spoton (about players putting excessive pressure on themselves). These guys are all international players and they are aware that when they are not performing at their best there is going to be pressure put on them. That is understandable, but a lot of these guys have played a lot of T20 cricket around the world over many, many years and it is really up to them to decide how they are going to take their games forward.” On the playing surface at Nassau County Stadium, Kirsten said that it was not dangerous by any stretch except an odd ball rising sharply. “It generally kept a little bit lower. I think we were able to score for both batting sides and also a fairly slow outfield, so it was never going to be a big total. I would have said 140 would have been a really good score on that pitch. So, India did not get that so I thought we had the game. We knew it was going to be tight but sometimes it is fun seeing games like that as well. It is not always about sixes and hitting, getting 230s and 240s. You can actually have a really entertaining game on a 120 chase. So, I do not think it is bad for the game,” he added. Kirsten said that the message to the team while chasing was to look for an odd boundary, punish the loose deliveries and rotate the strike well. “We kept it at a run a ball, and then we lost wickets and then we stopped scoring ones and then we were looking for boundaries and once you have got to that point it was always going to be hard. So, the message was to do what we executed on for 15 overs,” he added. The coach said that on a surface like this, it is important to rotate the strike well. “So, I agree with you that sometimes it is fun to watch a game like this where it is not only about hitting boundaries, but you also have to be able to use 120 balls really well. As I said, we did for 15 overs and then we lost the plot,” he added.

FRIDAY JUNE 14, 2024 9 Delhi water crisis: Geeta Colony residents forced to fill water from tankers, express outrage New Delhi [India], June 12 (ANI): Amid the raging water crisis in the national capital, the residents of Geeta Colony in East Delhi continue to face the shortage of water, as long queues of people around water tankers were seen in the region on Wednesday. The residents were seen huddling around water tankers with their buckets and cans in their hands to carry water. With piped supply affected in various residential areas, people are forced to take water through tankers. The residents expressed their resentment and anger against the water scarcity and inadequate supply. “The tanker ran out of water when we were standing in a queue. I had filled just one can of water which could fulfill only drinking purposes. The situation is troubling a lot,” an outraged woman resident told ANI. Another resident Gajendra Pratap said, “The situation is worsening day by day that sometimes it leads to violence. Water supplied is less than the requirement which makes it difficult for the population to combat the situation.” Mohammad Naushad, a resident said that people who need two tankers are only able to get one tanker. He also alleged that some people don’t follow the queue system further creating problems for others. “Just one tanker arrives in a day whereas the demand is for two tankers. Additionally, people don’t follow the queue system which worsens the situation. This drama surfaces every day.” “Nobody looks into the matter and nobody complains to the MLA of the area about the matter. The people who collect sufficient water filthily escape from the situation by stating ‘apna toh ho gaya’. (our job is done) One who receives an inadequate amount of water is compelled to either drink dirty water from the tap or buy from shops,” he added. Earlier, similar situations surfaced from several clusters of the capital city of Delhi including areas such as Mayur Vihar-1 and Okhla Phase-2. A war of words has erupted between Lieutenant-Governor VK Saxena and the AAP government regarding who is responsible for the water crisis. While the AAP government blames the water crisis on the BJPrules Haryana government saying that it did not supply the due share of water to Delhi, the LG denies this claim. After speaking with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on the phone on Tuesday, Saxena issued a statement saying that he was told by the Chief Minister that the neighbouring State has been releasing water into the Yamuna River for Delhi through Munak canal as per the city’s allocated share. The LG blamed the Delhi government for the water crisis, saying the shortage has been caused by the tanker mafia that is “stealing water [from the canal] in connivance with the ruling AAP”. Meanwhile, the Delhi Government has decided to deployAdditional District Magistrate and Sub Divisional Magistrate level officers in each zone, along with a team of Tehsildars and other officials who will act as a ‘Quick Response Team’ for the provision of water tankers and resolution of water-related complaints. Delhi Water Minister Atishi wrote to the Chief Secretary directing him to ensure that these teams monitor and inspect the main water distribution network from water sources to the water treatment plants and from WTPs to primary Underground Reservoirs (UGRs).
