FUN FACTS FACT 1 Semarang as the Cleanest Tourism City in ASEAN for the 2020-2022 Period The award was given by ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard (ACTCS). Semarang gets the title of the cleanest tourist city. Among them are increasing the number of green public spaces (RTH), reducing vehicle emissions, and reducing plastic waste. Venice is a city in Italy with many rivers flowing in the middle of the city and Semarang has something similar. There are about eight rivers flowing in the middle of Semarang City. FACT 2 Unique Facts of Semarang Nicknamed the Venice of Java Island FACT 3 Semarang with the nickname ATLAS City Semarang is referred to as the city of ATLAS. However, the atlas in question is not Greek mythology, nor is it a book of world maps. ATLAS itself stands for Aman (safe), Tertib (orderly), Lancar (smooth), Asri (beautiful), and Sehat (healthy).

Historic Site DESTINATIONS 1. Lawang Sewu Lawang Sewu is a famous landmark in Semarang. It was built during the Dutch colonial era in the early 20th century. It was the headquarter of the Dutch East Indies Railway Company. Lawang Sewu doesn't have a thousand doors, but its so many doors and windows, as well as its imposing facade and intricate design, have earned it its nickname. This magnificent building is a testament to the colonial architectural style, characterised by its high ceilings, arched doorways and ornate details. Lawang Sewu has a fascinating history, having witnessed Indonesia's journey through colonialism, independence and beyond. During World War II, the Japanese used the building as a prison. Nowadays, Lawang Sewu is a museum. It shows visitors the rich cultural heritage of Semarang. Lawang Sewu is a symbol of the city's resilience and cultural heritage. It invites visitors to step back in time and uncover the secrets of this historic land. Jl. Historic Site DESTINATIONS 2. Sam Poo Kong Sam Poo Kong Temple, also known as Gedung Batu Temple, is a cultural landmark in the heart of Semarang, Indonesia. It was built in the 15th century and is a must-visit for tourists and locals alike. Legend says that Chinese Admiral Zheng He visited on his way to Southeast Asia. He built this temple to honour the local deity and to promote cultural exchange between China and Indonesia. The temple's architecture reflects a blend of Chinese and Javanese influences, with intricate carvings, ornate roofs and colourful pagodas. The main prayer hall is decorated with statues and altars, creating a sense of serenity and spirituality. Jl. Historic Site DESTINATIONS Kota Lama is a historic area with old buildings with the touch of an old Dutch architecture. This area was the government centre then. The buildings have big doors and windows, decorations, and high ceilings. Some interesting places to visit include Blenduk Church, Srigunting Park, Jiwasraya Insurance Building, Mpu Tantular Mandiri Bank Building, Rumah Akar beside Jiwasraya Building, Oudetrap Building, Semarang Art Gallery, De Spiegel, Marba, and many others. 3. Kota Lama Semarang For the more adventurous, strolling around the Old Town is fun as there are well-organised pedestrian areas. You can also join regular walking tours. On weekends, you can enjoy the car-free atmosphere along Jl. Letjen Suprapto. Since 2020, Kota Lama or Old Semarang City has been a National Cultural Heritage Area. The Old Semarang City Area has four sites that show the city's history from the 15th century to the early 20th century. The four sites are Kauman, Malay, Chinatown and Oudestad.
