Page 04 | MAY 2024 The Bottom Line Crises in water scarcity or crisis in accountability? Words by: Carlo Balvez In the past few months, water scarcity has unfolded silently but profoundly inside the vicinity of Cebu Normal University. A minor annoyance that rapidly developed into a serious problem that affected the university community particularly the faculty and students on a daily basis. Students are forced to look for relief outside of the university, as a result of the terrible consequences, which include declining cleanliness standards and inaccessible restroom facilities. Nevertheless, a tangible sense of annoyance persists in spite of the growing difficulties, spurred by the impression that the administration is not paying enough attention or taking appropriate action. The outcry becomes worse day by day, exposing a conspicuous lack of attention to the needs of those who are most impacted. At the heart of this crisis lies a fundamental question: How can CNU step up to the plate and take on this challenge head-on? The solution is swift and decisive action, not indifference or delay. The administration must recognize how serious the issue is and pledge to act quickly to put forward practical solutions. Above all, the different steps in the process should be guided by transparency. Maintaining transparency regarding the administration's endeavors and advancements in addressing the water crisis is imperative for keeping the community updated. Building an accountable culture will help CNU win back its stakeholders’ trust and confidence in its capacity to deal with critically important problems. Trust and a sense of accountability are fostered among staff, faculty, and students when the administration is transparent and forthright about its actions and progress. This accountability improves the university's overall governance and ability to respond to future challenges in addition to helping to resolve the current problem of water scarcity. For it to rebuild trust in its capacity to effectively tackle and resolve major issues, CNU needs to take these actions very seriously. EDITORIAL Lack of running water in comfort rooms Editorial Cartoon: Elodie Manubag Words by: Elodie Manubag The recent spotlight on Cebu Normal University (CNU) has brought to light a concerning reality for its students—the persistent challenges related to essential infrastructure, particularly the lack of running water in comfort rooms. The inability to flush toilets has not only led to a foul odor but has also created unhygienic conditions, with waste remaining unattended for extended periods. Students have expressed their disappointment and frustration regarding these longstanding issues, which also include the absence of air conditioning in the library for almost a year, insufficient student spaces, and damaged classroom equipment. These problems have significantly impacted the daily lives and learning experiences of Normalites, raising valid concerns about the university's commitment to addressing basic needs. It It is commendable that CNU has been in regular communication with MCWD, especially during recent water supply interruptions due to maintenance activities. However, the fact remains that students have been grappling with these issues for an extended period, impacting their daily routines and overall well being. Efforts to resolve these infrastructure challenges must be expedited, with clear timelines and actionable steps outlined. While establishing partnerships and culinary ventures like the upcoming coffee shop are exciting developments, they should not overshadow the urgency of addressing fundamental needs. As CNU navigates these challenges, it's crucial for university administration, student representatives, and relevant stakeholders to collaborate transparently and decisively. The well-being and conducive learning environment for students should remain at the forefront of all initiatives and actions. The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing has stirred a mix of excitement and concern among students, highlighting the university's eagerness to evolve alongside its challenges. The partnership between CNU and 5th Elements Consultancy Incorporated signifies more than just a coffee shop setting up on campus—it's a step towards enriching student experiences, fostering a vibrant campus culture, and providing opportunities for community engagement. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the allure of new culinary delights are certainly enticing prospects for students and faculty alike. The brewing excitement over the coffee shop serves as a catalyst for broader discussions on campus improvements, ensuring that progress is nclusive and impactful for all stakeholders. Courtesy: Cebu Normal University Facebook Page Words by: Elodie Manubag However, beneath the surface of anticipation lies a palpable concern among students regarding existing campus issues. The lack of adequate facilities, including classrooms, has been a persistent challenge. The high heat index inside classrooms during hot seasons, coupled with water scarcity in comfort rooms, has added to students' discomfort. Additionally, the limited space in the canteen area has often led to overcrowding and i nefficiencies. As CNU prepares to welcome its new coffee shop, it also stands at a crossroads where it can leverage this momentum to address longstanding infrastructure challenges. The partnership signifies not just a culinary addition but an opportunity for comprehensive growth and student-centric development. . The brewing excitement over the coffee shop serves as a catalyst for broader discussions on campus improvements, ensuring that progress is inclusive and impactful for all stakeholders. By nurturing a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement, CTE not only secures its place in sporting history but also lays the foundation for a brighter, more inclusive future for the entire university community. CNU Modality Shift- A smart move or disruptive leap? Cebu Normal University's (CNU) ambitious goal to transform into a smart learning institution is in accordance with contemporary educational trends, as it gets ready to switch to a fully online mode for the upcoming academic year. CNU's dedication to innovation is demonstrated by this initiative, which aims to modernize campus facilities and integrate cutting-edge technologies to create a more engaging and customized learning environment. But this substantial shift brings up a number of important issues that need to be carefully thought through. The shift to online learning represents a radical redesign of the educational process as well as a logistical adjustment. The advantages are obvious: learning flexibility, easy access to a multitude of online resources The ability of the teachers and students to adjust to an online-only mode is another crucial component of this shift. The support mechanisms implemented are critical to this initiative's success. To guarantee a seamless transition, CNU must set up comprehensive faculty training, strong technical support, and open lines of communication. Photo by: Elodie Manubag Words by: Carlo Balvez and the possibility of utilizing advanced tools to improve teaching and learning. But the obstacles are equally overwhelming. The digital divide is the most important of these; for many CNU students, it is an unsettling reality. Not everyone has access to dependable internet and appropriate devices, which raises the possibility that the change could worsen alreadyexisting disparities in the absence of deliberate intervention. Further, numerous fields and learning styles respond differently to online instruction. Students who need real-world experience or who work best in groups may find the online format restrictive. The university needs to come up with innovative ideas to close these gaps, perhaps using hybrid models that combine periodic on-campus intensives with online instruction. The acceptance of these changes will also be greatly influenced by the transparency with which they are implemented. From planning to evaluation, the university community must be involved at every stage of the procedure. Feedback systems should be put in place to enable teachers and students to voice their ideas and concerns, involving them in the process of determining how their education will develop. CNU finds itself with a choice between opportunity and challenge as it navigates this essential transition. If implemented with a focused commitment to inclusivity, quality, and ongoing improvement, the shift to a smart learning school has the potential to become a benchmark for educational innovation. In the new era of higher education, CNU could potentially emerge as a leader if it can fully realize the benefits of digital learning while avoiding its drawbacks.

FEATURE La Palmera Daily Grind: Normalites as struggling A Triumph at the PASUC NCAF 2024 Words by: Chenny Rose Palata commuters Words by: Carlo Balvez The daily commute is a formidable obstacle that Cebu Normal University (CNU) students must overcome alongside their academic obligations. For many Normalites who depend on public transportation to get to and from campus, the bustling streets and heavy traffic of Cebu provide a major challenge. Their daily commute, which is frequently characterized by packed cars and erratic schedules, not only puts a strain on their patience but also has an impact on their mental and academic wellbeing. Normalites begin their days early in the morning. The idea is to beat the rush hour and get a seat on one of the main public transportation vehicles—buses, tricycles, or jeepneys. But because these are usually packed to capacity, they are forced to stand for extended periods of time in claustrophobic surroundings. Because there isn't enough seating or personal space, they frequently arrive at their destination exhausted before classes even start. While they make their way through the city's traffic jams and frequently arrive at their destination frazzled, the crammed and occasionally dangerous conditions of public transportation contribute to the stress. Photo by: Elodie Manubag The lives of many Normalites are further complicated by the unpredictable nature of public transportation schedules. There are frequent delays due to vehicles breaking down or running behind schedule, which prevents them from attending crucial classes or examinations. They have to leave the house several hours in advance because of this, which takes up valuable time that they could use for sleeping or studying. Another important problem is the cost of transportation, since Normalites' meager funds are being strained by fare increases. These difficulties can have an overpowering combined effect that heightens anxiety and a sense of powerlessness. Moreover, these transportation difficulties have a significant psychological cost. Normalites worry about missing classes because of transportation problems, and they stress about arriving on time. They may become less focused and unable to give their all to their academic endeavors as a result of this ongoing worry. As they struggle to maintain their grades while coping with the daily grind of public transportation, burnout can result from the pressure to balance academic demands with an exhausting commute. As they move forward in their educational journeys, their experiences highlight the urgencyfor improved public transportation systems that can better support their needs and ease the burdens they face on a daily basis. In spite of the substantial challenges they confront, Normalites continue to exhibit remarkable resilience and determination. They are able to navigate the complexities of urban commuting while striving for academic excellence, highlighting their dedication and perseverance. In a surprising show of ability and devotion, Cebu Normal University (CNU) students, under the guidance of Coach Joseph Elvir C. Tubilan and Assistant Coach Maria Glenndie Rhose G. Carbajosa played an essential part in forming the team's execution, giving invaluable support The team's winning entry, a radio drama called "Hiraya," explored overcoming generational trauma and resilience. Crafted with accuracy and passion, it captivated the audience and judges and stood out among 13 competitors nationwide. Technical director and voice actor Loenn Vincent Ibo shared insights into the team's journey. The group remained unfazed despite facing challenges amid their preparations, including technical hurdles and time constraints. “Her love” By: Elodie Manubag In the language of love, igniting flames with her secrets untold, There she is, a blazing fire of love, so passionate and bold In the language of love with his touch so gentle like the wind There he is, a masterpiece of love so pure and genuine Their story unfolds under the shade of the starry night Both shone like the star illuminating the darkness making it bright. Their glistening gaze are like a mirror reflecting each of their desired future, Without any utter, yet whispering so loud, dreaming a commitment so pure. Now their souls finally connected in quinquennial, they grew and unite In laughter and sadness, their limitless dreams ignite In the depths of enchantment, their love story are now revealed, A love story not perfectly written, on every page finally sealed. For her, it was surreal, a dreamlike sentiment and unlikely to be true That somebody like him takes place to bring her joy that she didn't know A seraph in disguise as a huge blessing from above It was a gift from God, her now other half, her sunshine and her love. Paspas nga nagdagan ang oras, ang pitaka haw-ang sa kahubas. Kasikas sa pagpangagni, kadasig nga mahaw-as sa kapobre. Sa pagdagayday sa akong singot, ang luha niuyon. Time may pass, But it remains untamed. Despite the strong waves that come our way, Your love remains constant. You've nourished us with unwavering support, Providing peace and comfort amidst challenges. In the vastness of the ocean, I find your love infinite and overflowing. Showing no favors towards others, Equally providing the same affection. Like how the sea is home to countless life forms, You are our home, our hearts enfold. Our safe space, filled with fond memories. A place we always come home to.
