4 From the Language Editor's Desk In the midst of the hustle and bustle of The City of Toronto, Casa Loma is quite a tranquil place, when it's not crowded with tourists like it usually is. Built in 1914 by capitalist Sir Henry Mill Pallett, the historic site is regarded as a treasured heritage landmark. My visit to Casa Loma was nothing short of a fascinating experience! Its unique architecture and lavish gardens were a spectacular sight. The castle-like mansion did a great job flaunting the luxurious lifestyle Sir Henry Pallett and his beloved wife, Mary Pallett, enjoyed. With over 90 rooms, the castle is twin towered, with Gothic Revival form of architecture. Over 300 workers worked tirelessly to build this marvellous structure with the budget of 3.5 million Canadian dollars (old money), it took 3 years in total to build. Casa Loma boasts 21 fireplaces, a central vacuuming system, its own telephone exchange with 59 telephones, an oven big enough to cook an ox and a great hall with a 60 foot ceiling hung with flags, chandeliers and suits of armour. Walking into the great halls of Casa Loma, I felt ecstatic! There were lovely chandeliers and intricate designs on the ceilings and the rooms were large and the furniture was of high quality. It is a vintage break amongst the modern and technology influenced Toronto. If writing is your hobby, then writing an account describing Casa Loma will be a piece of cake. There are boards and charts everywhere making sure that you are an informed traveller. In conclusion, I would like to say that Casa Loma is a place that urges you to be creative and curious. Voice This was a great opportunity for me to perform on the school tier. If you are wondering what I am talking about, I am talking about the singing competition hosted in our school. This is the first time our school hosted such a competition. I was very excited about it! I started preparing almost immediately after the announcement was made. Our theme was 'World’. I sang the song ‘Darkside’. Everyone in the audience seemed to like my song. During my preparations, I enjoyed singing since it has been my favorite song since childhood. It is written by Alan Walker who has produced many songs in my list of favourite songs. I was very nervous while preparing for this competition. I hoped I reached the hearts of all Tasians. I was elated to know that I won this competition by receiving the first position. I hope our school arranges more of these competitions. ~Aadya Dhoot - 6 B Canvassing Page 7

Teacher’s Day Student’s Perspective Teacher’s Perspective This Teachers’ Day was a stark contrast to the previous ones. And here’s the twist - we, the students, who usually are the reluctant learners had to walk a mile in our teachers’ shoes. Being a student teacher felt challenging, on multiple fronts but especially owing to the fact that we still felt like kids playing dress up. For all of 5th September, I, shadowed Ms. Barkha Sharma, the middle school coordinator of our school. Ever since then, I am now recognised as the ‘Science Teacher (Didi)’ by my juniors. In addition to classroom teaching, I was also assigned backend office work too to better understand all that it takes to run a school. This experience has made me realise the amount of effort teachers expend in seeing their students succeed and further highlighted how being a teacher requires incredible patience. All in all, I have realised that not all superheroes wear capes, some have teaching degrees. ~Sanyukta Pansare - Class 10 This year, the Teachers’ Day celebration at our school was a memorable event. The day started with a surprise announcement that students of Grades 9 and 10 would be taking over the roles of a teacher for the day. Luckily, the one who was to be "me" happens to be one of my favourite students. He was given the responsibility of teaching all the classes and managing all the activities that I would normally do. As a teacher, I was elated and relieved to have a day off from my responsibilities. It was a great experience to see him shadow me and take charge of the classroom, right from the STT(Student Teacher Time) in 6C to the Computer Lab. The kids were fascinated to interact with him. It was interesting to see the difference in how they approached a bhaiya and a teacher. Kids had a good time with "Amrita Sir" as they gleefully referred to him as. Apart from the student taking over the role of a teacher, games like Housie and Antakshari were arranged for the teachers.
