The Governing Council expresses

sincere gratitude to the dedicated staff of RMSC for their outstanding work and unwavering commitment to providing every student with the opportunities they need to succeed in their life journeys. Education is a holistic endeavor, encompassing academic excellence, life skills, and overall well-being, and we are delighted to witness RMSC’s dedication to fostering growth in all these aspects. In 2023, the Governing Council had the privilege of meeting in person, (post covid) allowing us to actively support the school and gain firsthand insights into the myriad opportunities provided to students across all campuses. The Student Representative Council (SRC) continues to excel in representing student voices across all four campuses. Their outstanding efforts don’t go unnoticed, and we appreciate the time they dedicate to attending Governing Council meetings, sharing the fantastic initiatives they are spearheading. It’s a collaborative effort that makes our school community vibrant and student-focused. Our dedicated staff at the school consistently go above and beyond, investing extra hours to ensure our students have a rich educational experience with activities such as the Outdoor Education camps, the Year 9 Camps, excursions and competitions such as the STEM challenge and the Premiers Reading Challenge. Their commitment extends to organizing a variety of extracurricular activities, providing opportunities for students to explore new interests. During lunchtimes, they ensure students are engaged in diverse activities, such as dance, sports competitions and fund raising activities. The integration of Aboriginal perspectives across various subject areas is a testament to RMSC’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity. The Aboriginal Education team has held some very successful events to support cultural connections between the community and the school. This year the Sports Academy was established with Cricket, Soccer, AFL and Volleyball programs offered to Acknowledgement of country students. We are excited about the proposed new Gym which will house the Sports Academy in 2025. Facilities will include a performance room, a canteen and café area as well as state of the art technologies. As we bid farewell to the graduating Year 12 students of 2022, we extend our heartfelt wishes for success in their future endeavours. The achievements of both students and their families are commendable. Looking ahead to 2024, the Governing Council is eager to continue supporting RMSC and is excited about the upcoming milestones and achievements of the school and its students. We remain optimistic about the future and eagerly anticipate another year of growth and success at Roma Mitchell Secondary College. Donna Henry Chairperson Governing Council We acknowledge and recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as the First Nations people of Australia and that they are the traditional owners and custodians of the land and waterways throughout our country. We acknowledge the pain and struggle our First Nations People have experienced and continue to experience to this day. We hope that with the community we have at Roma Mitchell Secondary College we can bring about change in order to live in a more respectful and inclusive environment. Roma Mitchell Secondary College stands proudly on Kaurna Land. I pay my respects to the Kaurna people and to the Elders both past, present, future and emerging. It is a privilege to work, study, learn and teach at Roma Mitchell Secondary College. 4 5 Governing Council Report

The International Baccalaureate is a

world class curriculum recognised by universities around the globe; we are so fortunate to be able to offer the Diploma program to our senior students. The incredibly hard-working young people of the Diploma class of 2023 have spent two years engaged in deep learning and have completed an academically rigorous course equipped with the skills and knowledge to lead them into a future of endless possibilities. All of this of course could not be achieved without the incredible support of our school community lead by our team of expert subject teachers, and guided by parents, caregivers, volunteers, and peers. I extend my gratitude to you all for being part of our graduating class. CONGRATULATIONS TO: Duy Dang Pratik Dhungana Tori-Lee Fisher Mitchell Grundy Homayon Hussaini Krish Panchal Vansh Patel John Pham Ashley Tan Tan Tran DP Psychology Joeanna Mounzer Linda Fadaei Fard BJ Olivares IN THEIR OWN WORDS “…I believe that the process is more important than the product itself” Pratik Dhungana “The process of completing my Extended Essay (presented) many challenges…but the planning process would provide insight into whether the completion of the desired EE would be possible and have enough depth.” Mitchell Grundy “This whole process allows me to demonstrate from the IB learner profile: communication, inquirer and thinker” Duy Dang “I overcame several challenges with deadlines … which was stressful but when completed I felt accomplished.” Tori Lee DP Japanese Raiyu Teak Sok Emily Ho “Not only have I managed to develop a wide range of skills in both research and finding answers to my questions and the practical skills required for scientific experiments, I also managed to develop better personal version of myself.” Homayon Hussaini DP Maths AA Mustafa Rezaie “Looking back, writing the extended essay was a very difficult journey but it enabled me to become persistent even in face of difficultly. “ Vansh Patel “…the extended essay requires such meticulous preparation. I became more open-minded and communicative because of the involved research process.” John Pham “I am confident in saying that I have been able to grow as an individual… I was able to learn to come to terms with how much of a stronger work ethic I needed and learned to appreciate the work and effort that teachers and peers provide as learning and trying to rely on my own skills was a far more difficult task than anticipated.” Ashley Tan “The most important thing I have learnt is how to do and apply research to writing informative texts. I listened to advice from others and was able to develop, improve and expand my already existing ideas.” Tan Tran “Volunteering at the temple for Janmastmi was a meaningful CAS activity that allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and broaden my horizons. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to exploring other ways to engage with different communities and cultures.” Krish Panchal International Letter Exchange Program International Letter Writing Exchange Program Students across the school have participated in an international letter writing exchange program. We received over 500 letters from a school in Arizona, USA called Mountainside middle school. The letters were from year levels 6, 7 and 8. Questions these students asked us in the letters were about things like school sports, if we had a cafeteria and if we owned a pet kangaroo. Things that we’ve learnt are that they only have one break, they don’t have to wear uniforms, there are 7 lessons of 49 minutes each and they have to always move classrooms. School starts in September and ends in May the next year. Sport is really popular there and being an IB school they also learn languages and have the same types of lessons as us. Geneva Hodgson and Talia Bunn Years 7, 8 And 9 Community Service You may have noticed the promotional work that some of the year 9 students have been doing for their Community Projects. The aim of this project is to raise awareness of the work that food support services such as Food Bank do for our community and reflect on how actively participating in service, whether it indirectly through raising awareness or directly by donating canned and packaged, can promote empathy and equity. It has been great to see the boxes filling up in the Learning Communities, with the generosity of our students and families on show. All donated food will be packaged up ready for delivery to Food Bank who will create hampers to distribute to families in time for Xmas. pets too. Our year 7 and 8 students were introduced to the “Fill their Bowl” project in term 3 – a charity to help families keep their pets during challenging times. During the past few weeks, we have seen donations of pet food building up in the boxes in our learning communities – these will be delivered directly to the charity Safe Pets Safe families by the end of the term so keep promoting the cause and donate food if you can. Our commitment to nurturing the wellbeing of our Special Education students and staff extended to the continuation of our Dog Therapy Program. Our furry, four-legged companions are an integral part of our educational journey, providing unconditional love, support, and a source of comfort. The presence of these therapy dogs had a profound impact, creating a soothing and inviting atmosphere that allowed students to relax, reduce stress, and build emotional connections. The therapeutic bond between our students and these wonderful dogs fostered a sense of trust, empathy, and emotional expression, further enhancing their overall development and attention to academic tasks. Whether it was a gentle nuzzle during a challenging moment or a wagging tail that brightened up the classroom, our dog therapy program added an invaluable dimension to our holistic approach to education, reinforcing our commitment to providing a nurturing and inclusive learning environment. One of the most exciting developments in our curriculum this year was the introduction of Music Therapy and Outdoor Education. Outdoor Education has allowed our students to immerse themselves in the wonders of the natural world, fostering personal development, environmental awareness, and community building. Through hands-on experiences, environmental education, and teambuilding activities, our students have formed lasting connections with nature and with each other. Music Therapy has also proven to be a powerful tool for our students, providing them with therapeutic and creative outlets for self-expression, regulation and emotional well-being. In the realm of technology, our students embarked on a journey of exploration, engaging in hands-on learning experiences, demonstrations, and interactive sessions. They developed valuable design skills and brought their imaginative creations to life using 3D printers. This year, our students had a unique opportunity to collaborate with Makers Empire in the “Careers Under Construction” project. We proudly represented Roma Mitchell Secondary College as the sole Special Education participants in this venture. With determination and resilience, we navigated a rigorous program, and showcased outstanding examples of design thinking and innovative ideas at the Goodwood Community Centre, alongside many other schools. Physical Education remained at the forefront of our curriculum, with students participating in a wide range of physical education programs, including Lacrosse, MissFit, Badminton, Cricket, Basketball, and more. These diverse activities, organised throughout the year, not only promoted physical fitness but also instilled a sense of community and teamwork among our students. Our commitment to implementing an inclusive and holistic curriculum was evident in our efforts to enhance interception awareness, communication skills, and life skills. Students engaged in a variety of activities, including cooking, creative arts, sensory experiences and health awareness, as well as participating in the First Aid in Schools program. Students tackled practical life tasks such as laundry and independent living skills, supporting them to become lifelong learners. Overall, the 2023 special education curriculum emphasised holistic development, personalised learning, and a diverse range of experiences to cater to the unique needs and abilities of each student. 8 9 This year, the Special Education Curriculum continued to provide an inclusive and enriching educational program for our students. Throughout the year, our dedicated team of teachers and school support officers worked tirelessly to adapt and tailor the Modified SACE programs and Middle Years Curriculum to meet the diverse needs of our students, ensuring accessibility and personalised learning experiences for all.
