Pre-Season Square

Spring preparations are about transitioning the square from its winter state through to its spring state so that it is ready for the start of pitch preparation and the summer of cricket. The best way to manage a cricket square is always through sound preventative maintenance, which is all about dealing with problems before they arise and undertaking operations which promote the health of the cricket square. If the square was renovated successfully post season and has been regularly cared for over winter then the transition into spring is relatively simple. Cleaning up of the Square Inspect the square by walking across it, ensuring the removal of any debris or litter present. Simultaneously, manually extract any weeds, while also addressing small holes or depressions by filling them with loam and seed. Proceed to mow the surface, taking care not to remove more than one-third of the leaf during each mowing session. Over the course of several weeks, gradually lower the height of cut until the desired summer height is attained. Nutrition Application Administering fertiliser is a vital step to maintain the health and vigor of the grass for the upcoming season. By applying fertiliser, the overall appearance and well-being of the cricket ground can be upheld. It is advisable to choose a time when the immediate surface is dry, yet the soil retains some moisture. It is best to avoid dry, frosty, or windy conditions, as these factors may lead to uneven distribution and potential damage to the turf. Once the turf exhibits improved color and the plants are in good health, and weather conditions allow, pre-season rolling can commence. Pre-Season Rolling Weather allowing, start pre-season rolling in or around the late February - Early March. Pre-Season Mowing Consistent mowing, carried out three to four times per week, holds significance in achieving an appropriate grass length for optimal ball roll and encouraging healthy growth and thickening of the grass plants. height of 12-18mm by the end of March (but not lower). Maintaining the grass within this appropriate height range serves multiple purposes. It helps in preventing diseases and moss, while also ensuring that the woody base of the grass plant, known as the ‘crown,’ does not rise too high. This is important because a higher crown could lead to a lower-quality playing surface when the individual pitches are subsequently cut at a lower height during pitch preparation. Squaring the Square Prior to the season beginning (March and April).and the first pitch being prepared, it is important to ensure that the square is indeed square and that the individual pitch positions are marked out and are 22 yards in length in order to establish the true stump lines. TECHNICAL ADVICE OR SOIL ANALYSIS PLEASE CONTACT US This should be done using a 3,4,5 triangle or multiples of those numbers (i.e., 30, 40, 50. 66ft, 88ft, 110ft works well). The larger the measurements the more accurate you can be. The equipment needed will be two 50m tapes, pegs, string lines and marking material. Marking the Pitches Once you have established your square corners, you can then string across the bowling crease line (stump line) and mark your pitch edges (with a small 75 mm x 75 mm ‘T’ shape), and if it helps, your pitch centres too (e.g. with a straight line). You will need to decide on your pitch widths. Once you have your corners and pitches marked in, make sure you keep overmarking throughout the season - do this accurately as this will help with seting out your pitches accurately - but always double check your measurements before setting out and marking your pitches for play. Creating a Pitch Plan

A pitch plan is important to make sure that you use the right pitches for the right level of cricket at your ground and that you know which pitches need to be prepared in which order. Create a plan of your square and any synthetic pitches and match the fixture to the pitches. Pitch planning should be carried out when the fixtures are produced for the season, in advance of any individual pitch preparation starting. The important games can be scheduled for the centre of the square where longer boundaries can be used; the end pitches are often used for training or junior fixtures where shorter boundaries are needed. When pitch planning, avoid using pitches next to each other, one after the other. This is because play on one pitch could damage the one next to it whilst it is in prep, and you may be wanting to keep one pitch dry for play whilst wetting the one you are preparing to roll it.
