Speaking to ANI, the founder and chairman of American4Hindus, Romesh Japra said that it is the first time the HinduAmerican leaders as well as the organisations are getting together during such a Summit. “For the very first time, we are doing a Hindu-American Summit for political engagement. Our community has been involved in so many things — cultural, social, economic, religious, spiritual, and all kinds of programs but in politics we were way, way behind,” Romesh Japra said. Great academics, scientists, and physicians have come from our country, but we haven’t been able to achieve the same success in politics. “So, the first time we are getting all the leaders, the Hindu-American leaders as well as the organisations.... the 20 different organisations getting together, 130 people and we have Kevin McCarthy who is the speaker of USA and many many other representatives, who are going to join us, inspire all these leaders to get engaged politically also, and get their children, the next generation involved in the political arena as well,” Romesh Japra told ANI. On PM Modi’s visit to the US in June this year, he said, “We are excited that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting the United States. His coming, and what he has been able to do, put India on the world map.” It gives us a lot more encouragement, that what at the world stage he has been able to do, and we as Hindu-Americans...Indian Americans right here, sitting in America, we should be able to do a lot more, he added. The HinduAmerican Summit, hosted by the recently formed Americans4Hindus Political Action Committee (PAC) in collaboration with over 20 other diaspora organisations, will be held at the US Capitol to bring the Hindu community’s issues to the attention of lawmakers. Around 130 Indian American leaders from Florida, New York, Boston, Texas, Chicago, and California are attending the event to represent 20 Hindu and Indian organisations. Several other Congressional leaders, both Democrats and Republicans, are slated to speak at the conference alongside US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. June 16, 2023 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK India’s plan for progress on SDGs presents inclusive roadmap for G20 actions: Jaishankar Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 12 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said India has put forward an ambitious seven-year action plan for accelerating progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which presents a coordinated, integrated and inclusive roadmap for G20 actions. In his keynote address at the G20 Development Ministers’ Meeting here, the minister said the SDG agenda is a landmark not only in its universality, in that it applies to all countries but also in its integrity, in that it can only be successful as a comprehensive agenda. “If progress towards the SDGs was already falling short before COVID-19, this has only been further exacerbated by it. The climate change also continues unabated, with a disproportionate impact on Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States. Prospects for a global economic recovery remains dim amidst supply chain disruptions, prolonged debt crisis and pressures on energy, food and fertilizer security,” he said. “The Development Ministerial is an opportunity for us as the G20todemonstratesolidarity on these developmental issues. The decisions we make today have the potential to contribute to an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient future,” he added. He said India’s action plan for accelerating progress on SDGs puts forward transformative actions on the three core agendas. “India has put forward an ambitious 7-year action plan for accelerating progress on SDGs, which presents a coordinated, integrated and inclusive roadmap for G20 actions. The action plan not only galvanizes a strong G20 commitment to the development agenda but also puts forward transformative actions on the three core agendas,” he said. Jaishankar said the world today faces unprecedented and multiple crisis. “From the pandemics to disruptions in supply chains, from the impact of conflict to climate events, our era is becoming more volatile and uncertain by the day. Added to this is stubborn inflation, rising interest rates and shrinking fiscal space for many nations. As always, in such times, the weak and the vulnerable bear the brunt.” He said the meeting is taking place a pivotal moment with multiple important forums and events ahead – the G20 Summit, the SDG Summit, the COP28 and the Summit of the Future. “It is in our hands to shape the discussions at these future forums. We must put the development agenda at the heart of these discussions. The international community must speak in unison for those most in need,” he said. Noting that the theme of the Indian Presidency ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ is call for urgent action, the minister said G20 countries need to be bold in ambition. “We, as the G20 need to be bold in our ambition. We need to come together to address the crisis as one. As ‘One Earth’, we must demonstrate solidarity for those in need. Truly leave no one behind, mobilize resources and direct our efforts where they are most needed. As ‘One Family’, we must break all silos and destroy all fragmentations,” he said. During his address, he also touched upon the effects of climate change which has had a disproportionate impact on particularly least-developed countries and small island developing states. He also mentioned the prevailing debt crisis and food and energy security threats. Jaishankar said it is essential to constantly strengthen the international architecture and governance systems for the protection of Global Order, Global Laws, and Global Values. “In doing so we would invariably find ourselves on the path where diplomacy, dialogue and cooperation take precedence over competition, conflict and divisions. Choosing peace, cooperation and multilateralism is essential for building our collective future.” (ANI) building homes. He said,” We are planning to build nearly 4000 houses for those who have been displaced because of violence. The blueprint is yet to be finalised but we are looking to build a two-room set of such houses.” Taking stock of the situation, especially for children whose education is being impacted as Manipur continues to be on the simmer, the Chief Minister said that all help will be extended to make sure education doesn’t take a backseat. “Those displaced from Churachandpur and are in the camps in Imphal and arrangements are being made to send them to school and colleges here in Imphal,” Singh said in a press conference. People were displaced from their houses and are currently in temporary shelters in camps. Many of these people have also miss placed their documentation, especially Aadhaar cards. Since most of the Central and the state beneficiary schemes are linked to Aadhaar, the call was taken by the state government on Monday to make provisions for the reissue of the Aadhaar cards. “Government is looking to help people get their Aadhar cards reissued for those who have misplaced it or lost in the violence. Arrangements for getting the Aadhar will be made by the government at the shelter camps itself,” the chief minister announced. Taking stock of the recent situation, the Manipur government has extended the ban on the internet in the state till June 15. On May 29 Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the north-eastern state for a period of four days during which he held meetings with Chief Minister N Biren Singh, leaders of all political parties, civil society, women groups, tribal groups and security personnel. Shah had announced that a peace committee would be formed in the state. The committee was formed days after the announcement by the Home Minister. Violence gripped Manipur on May 3, as clashes were witnessed during a rally organised by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest the demand for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe. The ethnic violence continues to grip the state for over a month, in the wake of a directive of the High Court asking the state government to consider including the Meitei community in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs). Central paramilitary forces were posted in the state to control the violence and they still continue to be deployed across the state. Meanwhile, representatives from both the Kuki and Naga community, including members of legislative assembly from both sides, have come to Delhi and met top BJP leaders, including Home Minister, Amit Shah with their representations and demand. (ANI) Manipur: CM N Biren Singh assures full support to displaced people, educational arrangements for students By Payal Mehta | Imphal (Manipur) [India], June 12 (ANI): In an effort to address the recent violence that gripped the north-eastern state of Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday extended support to the affected persons and assured educational arrangements for students. Singh made a number of crucial announcements for the people, assuring houses for the displaced and education arrangements for students as hundreds continue to be in relief camps post-violence. As per the official records close to 47,000 people have been evacuated in the violence-torn situation and hundreds of people lost their homes which were gutted in the violence. FRIDAY JUNE 16, 2023 9 We can work on hypersonic missiles too: Former BrahMos Aerospace chief Dr Sivathanu Pillai New Delhi [India], June 12 (ANI): The grand Silver Jubilee Year celebration by India– Russia JV entity BrahMos Aerospace culminated on a high note on Monday in the presence of the company’s Founder CEO and MD Padma Bhushan Dr A.S. Pillai. Pillai addressed a gathering of BrahMos scientists, engineers and other staff members in the presence of Atul Dinkar Rane, (DG, BrahMos), DRDO and CEO and MD of BrahMos, Sanjeev K Joshi, Dy CEO, Praveen Pathak, Director, Market Promotion and Export and other esteemed officials. He said, “With the BrahMos programme, we proved to the world that India was the first country to have a supersonic cruise missile system.” “India had thus broken the ‘Fifth Nation Syndrome‘, as was once said by former President and ‘Missile Man’ of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the Founder and CEO of BrahMos, who played a pivotal role in the Military-Technology partnership programme between India and Russia“, he added. Dwelling upon the many milestones the JV entity has achieved since its formation on February 12, 1998, followed by the maiden successful launch of supersonic BrahMos on June 12, 2001, Pillai said that the thought process in establishing a unique organisation like BrahMos was completely different. “Every challenge was accepted...We never said ‘No’ to any challenge,” he said. Referring to the current geopolitical volatility, Dr Pillai, while equating BrahMos to ‘Brahmastra’ of the 21st century, said, “In a democracy, only a strong Nation can advocate peace. And a powerful weapon like BrahMos gives strength to India to advocate peace in the world.” He appreciated the efforts of BrahMos Aerospace in developing more advanced variants of BrahMos, including the BrahMos Next-Generation (NG) and hypersonic BrahMos. “We can work on hypersonics and can definitely prove (to the world) that we are capable here too,” Dr Pillai said. BrahMos Chief Atul D Rane in his remarks said that it takes a lot of courage and fortitude and Dr. Pillai had the vision to lead the JV programme from the front...he’s one of the best leaders one could have. “If BrahMos today stands on any pillar, then Dr Pillai is that pillar,” Rane said. On this occasion, Dr Pillai inaugurated the BrahMos auditorium which has been dedicated to him and named ‘Dr A Sivathanu Pillai’ auditorium. The ‘Founders Gallery section of BrahMos Museum also showcases the many awards and accolades he has received throughout his long, illustrious career as an iconic scientist of India.
