Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, made the announcement while addressing a media briefing on Covid-19 and global health issues. “It is therefore with great hope that I declare #Covid19 over as a global health emergency. However, that does not mean Covid19 is over as a global health threat. Last week, Covid-19 claimed a life every three minutes – and that’s just the deaths we know about,” he said. “As we speak, thousands of people around the world are fighting for their lives in intensive care units. And millions more continue to live with the debilitating effects of post#Covid19 condition,” the Director General of WHO added. The WHO had declared Covid-19 as a global Remember: emergency in January 2020. “1221 days ago, WHO learned of a cluster of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause in Wuhan, China. On the 30th January 2020, on the advice of an Emergency Committee convened under the International Health Regulations, I declared a public health emergency of international concern over the global outbreak of #Covid19 – the highest level of alarm under international law,” Tedros said. “At that time, outside China there were fewer than 100 reported [#Covid19] cases, and no reported deaths. In the 3 years since then, Covid-19 has turned our world upside down. Almost 7 million deaths have been reported to WHO, but we know the toll is several times higher – at least 20 million,” he noted. “What this news means is that it is time for countries to transition from emergency mode to managing #Covid19 alongside other infectious diseases,” he added. The scientist was earlier arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for leaking sensitive information through apps to foreign agents who had honey trapped him. “The scientist had been removed as the Laboratory Director after our probe found that he was found indulging in leaking sensitive information,” a senior DRDO official told ANI. “The agency had launched a probe against Purulkar after receiving inputs from other agencies about his activities online,” he added. “He had been attached to some office and we had already taken action against him,” the official added. Officials said the agency is still carrying out an investigation into the issue and also sensitising its officials against indulging in any such activities on social media. Kurulkar was an ‘Outstanding Scientist’ (equivalent to Lieutenant General in Army) while heading the Research & Development Establishment (Engineers) laboratory in Pune as its director. Responding to the development, Maharashtra ATS said the scientist was found to have had contact with the operatives of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI through social media via WhatsApp messages, voice calls, and video. The ATS said despite holding a responsible position, the scientist allegedly misused his post, thereby compromising on sensitive government secrets, which could pose a threat to national security if it falls into the hands of the enemy nation. A case has been filed against the scientist under Section 1923 of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and other relevant sections. (ANI)

I am pleased to announce that Neera Tanden will continue to drive the formulation and implementation of my domestic policy, from economic mobility and racial equity to health care, immigration and education,” read Biden’s statement. Tanden will be the first Asian-American to lead any of the three major White House policy councils in history. Tanden, who previously served as assistant to the president and staff secretary, will be replaced by Stefanie Feldman. Most recently, Neera was the President and CEO of the Center for American Progress and the Center for American Progress Action Fund. “She was a key architect of the Affordable Care Act and helped drive key domestic policies that became part of my agenda, including clean energy subsidies and sensible gun reform. While growing up, Neera relied on some of the critical programs that she will oversee as Domestic Policy Advisor, and I know those insights will serve my Administration and the American people well. I look forward to continuing to work closely with Neera in her new role,” said Biden. Tanden previously served as senior advisor for health reform at the Department of Health and Human Services, working on President Obama’s health reform team in the White House. May 12, 2023 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK “Victims of terrorism do not sit together with perpetrators...”: Jaishankar on India-Pakistan ties Panaji [Goa], May 5 (ANI): Amid a freeze in India-Pakistan ties over Islamabad’s support to cross-border terrorism, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said the “victims of terrorism do not sit together with perpetrators of terrorism”. Addressing a press conference after a meeting of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers, Jaishankar slammed Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari‘s “weaponising terrorism” remarks. “Victims of terrorism do not sit together with perpetrators of terrorism to discuss terrorism. Victims of terrorism defend themselves, counter acts of terrorism, they call it out, they legitimise it and that is exactly what is happening. To come here and preach these hypocritical words as though we are on the same boat,” he said. He was answering questions on India-Pakistan ties including a question from a Pakistani journalist. Answering a question about the terror incident in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday in which five soldiers lost their lives, Jaishankar said there was a shared feeling of outrage. “They are committing acts of terrorism. I don’t want to jump the gun on what happened today but we are all feeling equally outraged. On this matter, the terrorism matter, I would say that Pakistan’s credibility is depleting faster than even its Forex reserves,” Jaishankar said. The menace of terrorism surfaced again in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday with the Army engaged in an encounter with Pakistan-backed terrorists in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir. The incident took place on a day Bilawal Bhutto was in Goa to take part in the SCO meet. Five soldiers lost their lives in the anti-terror operation in the Kandi area of Rajouri on Thursday. Answering a question related to bilateral talks, Jaishankar said Bilawal Bhutto came as Foreign Minister of an SCO Member State. “That is part of multilateral diplomacy. Don’t see it as anything more than that. I think that nothing from what he said or what I heard he said deserves for this to be treated more than that...As a promoter, justifier and I am sorry to say, spokesperson of a terrorism industry which is the mainstay of Pakistan, his positions were called out and they were countered, including at the SCO meeting,” he said. India has consistently raised the issue of Pakistan’s continued support to cross-border terrorism and terrorist infiltration. It has said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have borne the brunt of this terrorism campaign for decades and continue to do so. Answering a query related to China-PakistanEconomic Corridor (CPEC), Jaishankar said connectivity cannot violate territorial integrity and sovereignty. “Let me come to the specifics, on the CPEC, the so-called corridor, I think it was made very clear, not once but twice in the SCO meeting that connectivity is good for progress, but connectivity cannot violate territorial integrity and sovereignty. This has been our long-standing position, nobody should have any doubt about it and I assure those who are in the room today had no doubt about it, I made sure of that,” Jaishankar said. He also brushed aside Pakistan’s objections to India hosting G20 tourism working group meeting in Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir in May. “I don’t think there is a G20 issue to debate with anybody, certainly not with a country which is nothing to do with G20. Jammu and Kashmir was, is, will always be a part of India. The G20 meetings are held in all the Indian states and Union Territories, so it is completely natural that it is held there,” Jaishankar said. In his remarks at the SCO meeting, Bilawal Bhutto said terrorism should be “weaponised” for diplomatic point scoring Bhutto said terrorism continues to threaten global security and that collective security is a joint responsibility. “Let’s not get caught up in weaponising terrorism for diplomatic point scoring,” he said. India has said that talks and terror cannot go together and it is for Pakistan to create a conducive atmosphere for bilateral talks. “Somebody says you are weaponizing terrorism... they think terrorism is legitimate”: Jaishankar slams Bilawal Bhutto Lambasting Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for his “weaponising terrorism” remarks, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said that it means “they think terrorism is legitimate” and that India is politically, diplomatically exposing Pakistan before the world as it is a victim of cross-border terrorism. Jaishankar, who addressed a press conference after the meeting of SCO Foreign Ministers, said India is defending itself against terrorism. “ T h e weaponization. It’s a very interesting statement because it unconsciously reveals a mindset. What does weaponizing something mean? It means that the activity is legitimate and somebody is weaponizing it. So you say you are weaponizing trade, you are weaponizing technology. Somebody says you are weaponizing terrorism, that means they think terrorism is legitimate, that we should not weaponize it. That is normal,” said Jaishankar. He was responding to Bilawal Bhutto’s remarks at the SCO meet on not getting “caught up in weaponising terrorism for diplomatic point scoring,” “Okay, now what are we doing? We are countering ourselves. Countering terrorism? We are defending ourselves. We are calling it out. We are exposing it... So, to me, we are not scoring diplomatic points. We are politically, diplomatically, exposing Pakistan before the world. And as a victim of terrorism, I’m completely entitled to do so,” Jaishankar said. He said India has every right to defend itself from cross-border terrorism. “What do you mean we should not weaponize terrorism? That means, as a victim, I’m supposed to put up with it. So you not only commit terrorism, but you say, oh, please, do not even speak about it? Come on. So to me, that sentence, it spoke so much about a mindset of that country that you can all see for yourselves,” he added. Jaishankar said Pakistan is a “spokesperson of the terrorism industry”. He said Bilawal Bhutto came to India for SCO meeting. “That is part of multilateral diplomacy. Don’t see it as anything more than that. I think that nothing from what he said or what I heard he said deserves this to be treated more than that...As a promoter, justifier and I am sorry to say, spokesperson of a terrorism industry which is the mainstay of Pakistan, his positions were called out and they were countered, including at the SCO meeting,” he said.

FRIDAY MAY 12, 2023 9 Sale Ends 5/31/2023 ‘Sikh Gurus’ teachings based on welfare of all, Guru Nanak gave a universal message’ New Delhi [India], May 9 (ANI): It is crucial for the Sikh community to acknowledge the importance of inclusivity, education, and democratic values, and to adopt a more compassionate approach to address the issues that affect not only Sikhs but all communities in Punjab, according to an article by Gurcharan Singh in Khalsa Vox. Gurcharan Singh has said in his article that it is the duty of Sikh preachers, leaders and political scholars to make efforts towards increasing the trend of basic education towards enlightenment among the youth. The article talks about the universal message of Guru Nanak. “By connecting with the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, we can promote the inclusive and universal message of Guru Nanak. The Gurus’ teachings are based on the welfare of all. The Sikh community should not limit its understanding of universal welfare to just providing langar (free food)...” Gurcharan Singh said in his article in Khalsa Vox that instead of fanatical religious thinking, the way of adopting secular thinking can be chosen. “Punjab is not only inhabited by Sikhs but there are more communities than Sikhs. Therefore, instead of sectarian thinking, the Sikh community should be given its proud Sikh philosophy.
