The union minister made the above remarks when a high-level Israel delegation led by Dr Daniel Gold, Head of DDR&D, Israeli Ministry of Defence, called on him here, according to Ministry of Science and Technology. On the occasion, India and Israel signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Industrial Research and Development Cooperation with focus on several key technology areas, like Aerospace, Electronics Instrumentation, Civil, Infrastructure and Engineering, Ecology, Environment, Earth and Ocean Sciences and Water, Mining, Minerals, Metals & Materials, Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Energy (Conventional & Non- Riyadh [Saudi Arabia], May 3 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a telephone conversation with Saudi Arabia‘s counterpart Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah and discussed aspects of enhancing bilateral coordination on many issues of common concern and intensifying the efforts of the two countries in laying the foundations for international peace and security. “His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, held today a phone call with His Excellency Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister of India,” Saudi Arabia‘s Foreign Ministry said in a statement which is shared by its official Twitter account. “During the call, they reviewed the historical and strong relations between the two countries and the two friendly peoples and ways to enhance and develop them in various fields,” it added. “The two sides discussed aspects of enhancing bilateral coordination on many regional and international issues of common concern, and intensifying the efforts of Conventional) and Energy Devices, Agri, Nutrition & Biotech and Healthcare, as per an official release of Ministry of Science and Technology. The MultiSectoral Agreement was signed between CSIR and the Directorate of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D), Ministry of Defence of the State of Israel, in the August Presence of Union Minister for Science & Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh at the CSIR-Science Centre, New Delhi. Welcoming the signing of the agreement, Dr Jitendra Singh said that 2023 is a very important year for the country as India is holding the G20 presidency under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is also the year when India and Israel are celebrating 30 years of successful diplomatic relations. The Minister said he is optimistic that this agreement will open a new phase in the India–Israel partnership in areas like Innovation, Technology and startups. During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi assessed the most recent developments in Sudan and received a first-hand report of the conditions on the ground, with a specific focus on the safety of over 3,000 Indian citizens presently located throughout the country. Sudan is experiencing bloodshed as a result of clashes between the army and paramilitary forces. Fighting has erupted between soldiers loyal to Sudanese army leader Abdel Fattah al- Burhan and his deputy, paramilitary Rapid Support Soldiers (RSF) commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. Committed to ensuring that no Indian national is left behind in Sudan, India started Operation Kaveri on April 24 and has also deployed its military planes and warships in the war-torn country. On Tuesday, under Operation Kaveri, 328 more Indians landed at the New Delhi International Airport from strife-torn Sudan on Tuesday night. Nearly 3,000 stranded Indians have reached India till now. “328 more passengers have landed in New Delhi. #OperationKaveri moving steadily forward as around 3000 have reached India now,” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar tweeted. Meanwhile, the Gujarat High Court on Tuesday reserved its order on Rahul Gandhi’s plea seeking a stay on his conviction in the defamation case. Justice Hemant Prachchhak will pronounce the verdict after vacation. The court refused to grant any interim relief to Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi had moved the Gujarat High Court on April 25 challenging the Surat sessions court order which declined to stay his conviction in the criminal defamation case. During the hearing on April 29, Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Rahul Gandhi, had sought time to produce certain documents on record after which the court adjourned the hearing to May 2. The Surat sessions court had on April 20 rejected Rahul Gandhi’s plea seeking a stay on his conviction in the 2019 criminal defamation case. In his judgement, Additional sessions judge Robin P Mogera had cited Gandhi’s stature as an MP and former chief of the country’s second-largest political party and said he should have been more careful. He cited prima facie evidence and observations of the trial court and said it transpires that Gandhi made certain derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi apart from comparing people with the same surname with thieves. Mogera said the surname of the complainant in the case, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Purnesh Modi, is also Modi. “...the complainant is [also an] ex-minister and involved in public life and such defamatory remarks would have certainly harmed his reputation and caused him pain and agony in society,” he said. Mogera cited the disqualification criteria under the Representation of the People Act and added that removal or disqualification as MP could not be termed irreversible or irreparable loss or damage to Gandhi. Following his conviction by a lower court in the criminal defamation case, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as Lok Sabha MP. He had been elected to Lok Sabha from Wayanad in Kerala.

May 5, 2023 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Will continue working in political life, won’t contest elections now: Sharad Pawar after stepping down as NCP president M u m b a i (Maharashtra) [India], May 2 (ANI): Veteran politician Sharad Pawar on Tuesday announced that he has decided to step down as the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) after helming it for 24 years and stated that he will not contest any more elections. “After this prolonged period of political career from May 1, 1960 to May 1, 2023, it is necessary to take a step back. Hence, I have decided to step down as President of the Nationalist Congress Party,” Pawar said after the launch of the second edition of his autobiography ‘Lok Maze Sangati’. He further said that he would continue working in the political, social and cultural life. “I have three years tenure remaining in Rajya Sabha. I will not contest elections now,” the veteran leader said. Ajit Pawar, the nephew of Sharad Pawar supported the latter’s decision to step down from the party President post. “Pawar Sahab himself had said about the necessity of change in the guard a few days ago. we should see his decision in the light of his age and health also. everyone has to take a decision according to time, Pawar Saheb has taken a decision and he won’t take it back,” Ajit Pawar said. Meawhile, Sharad Pawar recommended a committee of senior NCP leaders to decide on the future course of action. The committee will include Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare, P C Chacko, Narhari Zirwal, Ajit Pawar, Supriya Sule, Jayant Patil, Chhagan Bhujabl, Dilip Walse-Patil, Anil Deshmukh, Rajesh Tope, Jitendra Awhad, Hasan Mushrif, Dhananjay Munde, Jaydev Gaikwad and chiefs of party frontal cells, Pawar said. After his announcement, several NCP leaders and workers were seen chanting slogans asking Pawar to take back his decision. Recalling his political career, the NCP supremo said, “Since the formation of the Nationalist Congress Party in 1999, I have had the privilege of being elected as its President, which today is in its 24th year. This entire journey of being in public life, which began on May 1, 1960, has continued unabated for the past 63 years, having served Maharashtra and India in various capacities during this period. “I have three years tenure remaining in Rajya Sabha. I will not contest elections henceforth. In these three years, I will concentrate more on issues concerning to state and the country. I will not take any additional responsibilities. I started my political career on May 1, 1960. Yesterday we celebrated May Day. After this prolonged political career, one must think about stopping somewhere. One must not be greedy. I will never take the position of sticking to a post after so many years. Therefore, you might feel uneasy. But I have decided to retire from the post of the NCP chief, ” Pawar further said. The four-time chief minister of Maharashtra has previously served as the Minister of Defence in the Cabinet of P V Narsimha Rao and as Minister of Agriculture in the Cabinet of Manmohan Singh. He was the first and former president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which was founded in 1999, after separating from the Indian National Congress. Speaking after the release of his autobiography, Pawar said that it was time for a new generation to guide the party and the direction it intends to take. The NCP leader, however said that he would not take retirement from public life even after resigning from the party post. “Even though I am stepping down from the post of president, I am not retiring from public life. Constant travel has become an integral part of my life. I will continue attending public events, and meetings. Whether in Pune, Mumbai, Baramati, Delhi or any other part of India, I will be available to all of you as usual. I will continue to work round the clock to solve the people’s problems,” he said. Pawar’s decision came as a surprise for many of his partymen. Party MP Praful Patel said, “We have requested Sharad Pawar ji with folded hand to withdraw the decision. I request him to withdraw the decision on behalf of all. The state and the country need his leadership.” In an attempt to pacify agitated party workers, Patel said, “Repeating the same thing won’t solve any purpose and its meaningless. We senior leaders will talk to Pawar Saheb.” (ANI) Dabolim [Goa], May 3 (ANI): A day before the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ meeting, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived at Dabolim international airport in Goa on Wednesday. Jaishankar reached here to inspect the preparations for India’s presidency of the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting. India took over the rotating presidency of the SCO at the Samarkand SCO Summit in 2022. This year India is hosting several important SCO meetings including the Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Goa from May 4-5. India had sent formal invitations to all SCO members and the foreign ministers of China, Pakistan and Russia have confirmed their participation in the meeting. On its Foreign Minister’s visit to India, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday that at the meeting Qin Gang will exchange views with other SCO member states’ foreign ministers on the international and regional situation. “At the meeting, State Councillor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang will exchange views with other SCO member states’ foreign ministers on the international and regional situation and SCO cooperation in various fields, among other topics, to make full preparation for this year’s SCO summit,” the spokesperson said. Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov will also take part in the SCO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on May 4. Regarding the same, the Russian Embassy in India said, “On May 4-5, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will take part in the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation(SCO)member states in India.” A Russian official release said that deliberation over “topical issues of the international and regional agenda” will also be raised by Foreign Minister Lavrov. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari is also elated to attend the SCO foreign ministers’ meeting in Goa. On this, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said that Bhutto-Zardari will lead the Pakistani delegation to the meeting of SCO foreign ministers in Goa. Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch during a weekly presser on Thursday stated that Bhutto-Zardari is attending the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting at the invitation of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. “Our participation at the meeting reflects Pakistan’s continued commitment to the SCO charter and process and the importance that Pakistan accords to the region in its foreign policy priorities,” the spokesperson said.Bilawal will be the first foreign minister to visit India after a gap of nearly 12 years, reported Business Recorder. May 5, 2023 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Kerala HC asks state govt if rogue tusker ‘Arikomban’ could return to Chinnakanal Kochi (kerala) [India], May 3 (ANI): The Kerala High Court has asked the state government to clarify if there was a possibility of rice-eating wild tusker ‘Arikomban‘ returning to its original habitat in the Chinnakanal area of Idukki district. The court observed that such a possibility could not be ruled out till the rogue tusker adjusts to a new diet and directed the forest department to continue proper monitoring. Arikomban, which had struck terror among the local populace, raiding local shops and gobbling up rice, was shifted by forest officials to Periyar Tiger Reserve a few days ago after being captured from the forested parts of the Chinnakanal area. The court, however, expressed satisfaction with the ‘Arikomban Mission’ and issued a letter to all the members involved in the effort to capture the rogue tusker. It stated that an expert committee should be formed to resolve human-animal conflicts. T h e forest department informed the court that real-time surveillance of the runaway tusker was being ensured through a radio collar. The court again reminded that a long-term solution to the issue of mananimal conflict is needed and efforts should be made to clear all encroachments from the habitat of the local wildlife. The court was informed that an expert committee has been formed for a detailed study in this regard. After the move, the latest retail price of a 19 kg LPG cylinder in Delhi now stands at Rs 1,856.50. Last month, too, their prices were reduced by Rs 91.50 per unit, standing at Rs 2,028 per unit. Petroleum and oil marketing companies had on March 1 this year hiked the prices of commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 350.50 per unit and domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 50 per unit. The prices of the commercial cylinders were reduced the last time in September 1 last year by Rs 91.50.On August 1, 2022, too, the prices of commercial LPG cylinders were reduced by Rs 36. Prior to that, on July 6, rates for the 19-kilogram commercial cylinder were cut by Rs 8.5 per unit. By considering individual differences in lifestyle, socioeconomics, environment, and biology and looking for patterns, researchers may one day uncover paths towards more individualized prevention and treatment strategies for all of us. Patients may not be well served by treatments designed for the “average” person. Many people and populations have been historically left out of biomedical research, and thus, often left of health care solutions. Health problems can take years to unravel and require much trial-anderror treatment. Patients may not have access to or make use of their own health data. The All of Us Research Program hopes to nurture partnerships with at least a million participants who reflect the diversity of the U.S. so that all communities can be included in critical health research. Precision medicine research is still in the early days, so providers do not have enough information available to provide precise care for many conditions. Developing individualized approaches to care often requires time. It can be difficult to coordinate care between many different providers, especially with medical records and key data scattered in different silos. The program aims to deliver one of the largest and richest biomedical datasets that is broadly available yet secure.
