INDIA THIS WEEK 110 international passengers tested ‘randomly’ at Delhi airport on Day 1: Genestrings lab December 30, 2022 New Delhi [India], December 25 (ANI): The recent ‘Guidelines for International Arrivals’, issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), after Covid-19 resurfaced in some countries, to conduct random testing of two per cent international passengers (on the flight) at Airports, was followed accordingly and 110 international passengers Friday were tested randomly on day 1 at the Delhi IGI, Genestrings Diagnostic Centre said on Sunday. The guidelines, issued by Health Ministry, provide the protocols to be compiled by International travellers as well as points of entry (airports, seaports and land borders) starting from December 24, 2022. A subsection (2 per cent of the total passengers on the flight) is undergoing random post-arrival testing at the IGI Airport Delhi. “On average, approximately 25,000 travellers arrive at the IGI, Delhi Airport, out of which 500 random passengers are being tested. By the end of Day one Genestrings had conducted approximately 110 tests,” Dr Gauri Agarwal, Founder of Genestrings Diagnostic Center told ANI. Genestrings Diagnostic Centre’s lab at the Delhi airport resumed testing which was otherwise stopped after restrictions were taken off at the Delhi international airport, for the inbound passengers. After submitting samples for random testing, travellers will be allowed to leave the airport. “The timely decision by the Health Ministry and the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) to start the random testing at the airport is a much-needed prevention measure that will curb the spread of infection in the country. We have increased the manpower of lab technicians at the facility to ensure availability and timely reporting along with being fully prepared for COVID management,” said Dr Gauri Agarwal, Founder of Genestrings Diagnostic Center said. Genestrings was the first lab in the country during the pandemic to not only establish an RT- PCR testing lab at any International Airport but deliver RT-PCR results in 4 hours, when even the developed nations were taking 24-48 hours for the results. Genestrings then went on to become one of the largest COVID-19 testing facilities conducting over 20,000 tests per day. The lab at the Delhi international airport was also appointed by the Canadian government as the sole COVID-19 testing facility in India for Canada-bound passengers. Genestrings conducted over 2.5 million COVID tests in the past two years. The Delhi InternationalAirport Limited (DIAL) in collaboration with Genestrings Diagnostic Centre, has made all the necessary arrangements on time keeping in mind the fresh guidelines and passenger convenience. Similar arrangements were made earlier as well during the previous waves of the pandemic to ensure adherence to Covid19 protocol during the passengers’ waiting period inside the terminal. (ANI)

December 30, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK India was voice of entire Global South, reinforced commitment to multilateralism and UN reforms: Ruchira Kamboj New York [US], December 28 (ANI): Highlighting India’s twoyear tenure at the United Nations Security, which is coming to an end on December 31, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj on Wednesday said New Delhi was the voice of the entire Global South, and reinforced commitment to multilateralism and UN reforms. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Ambassador Kamboj said, “We were the voice of the entire Global South and we reinforced our commitment to the basic principles, including multilateralism, rule of law, and fair and equitable international system.” India assumed the monthly rotating presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on December 1, the second time in its two-year tenure, as an elected member of the Council in 2021-22. India had earlier assumed the UNSC presidency in August 2021. Summing up last two years for Indian Mission at UN, underscoring India’s December Presidency, she said, “At the high-level week of UNGA in 2020, where we before entered the Security Council, our Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that we will use the prestige and experience of being the largest democracy in the world for the benefit of the whole world.” Lauding India’s tenure and achievements, Kamboj said, “We can take pride in saying that India stood by those words. In the last two years, we spoke out in support of peace, security and prosperity. We did From The Poet’s Pen INDIA THIS WEEK- December3, 2020 INDIA THIS WEEK- January 30,2022 Happy New Year by Rajan George What is ‘New’ about the year I’m indeed so curious if each ongoing year should effect in us a change for good should not then we grow virtuous year by year? Growing in virtue meaning– abiding in love, seeking the Truth, knowing more of God who gives us life to live in and for Him, lend a hand to the trodden down who struggle before our eyes If celebrations for the new year abound in a show of mirth and gluttony, ingratiating sensuous cravings, and pleasures of the moment! Then are we still detained in the mold too old from which we constantly try escape! For the year to have novelty, Change should come from within The new man should the Old displace Where Agape Love for ever reside Jeus said, “I make everything New! Yes He alone makes everything New! You will soar to greater heights, like the eagles, if you shatter the fetters that have shackled you from taking off the ground Then and only then can you say Happy New Year! Yeah! Happy Happy New Year!! not hesitate in raising our voice against the common enemies of humanity, such as, terrorism.” She emphasised that India raised voice against terrorism in these two years, bringing attention to its various expressions which need to be addressed by the international community through solidarity and unity. “In October 2022 as you all know, we brought the Security Council, the famous horse-shoe table to India for the very first time, adopting the Delhi Declaration, where the Security Council spoke INDIA THIS WEEK Address: P.O. She reiterated that India brought the Council together in presenting a united front against terrorism. “In keeping up with the momentum, we piloted statement on counter-terrorism and during our December Presidency, we once again brought the Council together in presenting a united front against terrorism,” she added. On multilateralism and reforms in UN, she said, “We focussed our attention to the urgent need of reformed multilateralism through a signature event on December 14, for it to be fit for the purpose that UN needs to be urgently reformed to deal those with current and future challenges”. Over 70 countries participated in an open discussion chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and many affirmed support to India in an expanded Security Council. She also dwelt on the unveiling of a bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres and the President of the 77th UN General Assembly Csaba Korosi and Permanent Representative Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj joined the EAM for the unveiling of the bust. “Significantly, and again during December Presidency Gandhiji arrived at UN Headquarters, when the very first sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled by EAM in the North lawn Gardens of UN in the presence of UN Secretary-General and the President of UN General Assembly . He will remain here now as beacon and symbol of peace,” she said. On maritime security, Kamboj said until not too long ago, the Security Council was focused only on the issue of piracy, whereas maritime security encompasses far larger issues as well as a large troop-contributing country. “During our August Presidency of 2021, we organized an open debate on maritime security. As you may recall, this was the first time that Indian Prime Minister chaired the Security Council meeting. It was also the first time that Security Council had adopted a product in a holistic manner on maritime security, whereas earlier, it was focussed only on piracy and armed robbery,” said Kamboj. “As a large troop contributing country, we also brought attention to peace-keeping in August 2021, piloting Resolution 2589, which was adopted in a meeting chaired by EAM Jaishankar. It calls for accountability in cases of crimes against peacekeepers,” she added. The Indian envoy said overall, India’s has been an effective presence in the Council as it was leaving behind the imprint of a caring and contributive country. “We are only elected member to hold two Presidencies during its tenure in the Security Council this time. While, the UAE Mission applauded us in avwrapup session as a veteran Security Council member with a principled foreign policy and a constructive approach, the Swiss Mission to UN complimented us for an extremely efficient December Presidency — managing in three weeks what is usually done in four,” said Kamboj. December 30, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Small, Medium and Women owned Businesses: Maryland’s Community Voices PULIVARTI FROM PAGE 1 they contribute more than $800 billion to the Nation’s economy. In addition, there are nearly 11 million MinorityOwned Businesses employing more than 6.3 million people directly contributing over a trillion to the US economy. I will always be a champion for those small, medium, minority and women owned businesses.” Elisha Pulivarti has been a public servant for his entire life. He was an Executive Director for State of Maryland Governor’s Office on Asian Pacific American Affairs and also Adviser to all State Agencies and Maryland Assembly. He, during his tenure, initiated several avenues. He and Deputy Secretary Chris Foster travelled to India and established Maryland Trade Office in Bangaluru, signed strategic agreement with IITs Madras, Mumbai and Delhi with Johns Hopkins University. On Governor’s advise, Elisha and team invited Washington [US], December 28 (ANI): The White House on Tuesday called for ‘comprehensive’ reforms in the US immigration system after the Supreme Court extended Trump-era border restriction known as Title 42 as a result of which federal officials will be able to continue to swiftly expel migrants at US borders, CNN reported. The court also agreed in its ruling to hear the states’ appeal this semester. During its argument session, which starts in February 2023, the court stated that it would hear arguments on the case. However, for now, Republican-led states who sought the Supreme Court to intervene and quash a lower court decision ordering the termination of the authority have won with a 5-4 decision. Notably, Title 42 permits US border agents to immediately turn away migrants who have crossed the southern border in the name of Covid-19 prevention. Public health professionals and immigrant groups have long criticized the use of the public health authority at the US southern border, claiming it is an improper justification for preventing immigrants from entering the country, according to CNN. The White House has said it would comply with the order but has urged Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform measures like the ones President Biden proposed on his first day in office. “Title 42 is a public health measure, not an immigration enforcement measure, and it should not be extended indefinitely. To truly fix our broken immigration system, we need Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform measures like United States Senator Chris Van Hollen from Maryland, Presented the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Presidental Volunteer Service Medallion on behalf of the President Joseph R. Biden. Ambassadors from Asian Countries to Baltimore. He also facilitated Maryland Governor’s meet with 25 top Indian American Entrepreneurs in Johns Hopkins University campus in Gaithersburg. The Governor, in 2004, launched the Maryland India Business Roundtable, Inc, which was the precursor to US India SME Council. The council has so far established strategic relationship with the US department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), Small Business Administration (SBA). It has signed a strategic agreement with the Africa Union (55-nation from African Continent), major states in India and Minister of Commerce’s Electronic and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC). The Council also launched incredible inc 50 to recognize 25 fastgrowing private companies in the US and 25 in India every year. India is one of the oldest civilizations and has rich cultural heritage in the world. With millions of small businesses in India and US as well as strong democratic ties, both countries are natural partners, according to Elisha. To honor a leader who has worked towards strengthening those ties, US India SME council launched “Mahatma Gandhi Global Leadership and Peace” award. First year, the award was given to Eric Holcomb, the Governor of Indiana. Congressman Brad Sherman, co-chair of India Caucus was honored in the second year and House Majority Whip, congressional representative Jim E. Clyburn was the recipient in the third year. As a promoter of SME community, US India SME council also launched the spotlight column in India This Week newspaper in 2022. The column has so far highlighted many community leader and small business owners. The column will continue into 2023 to feature interviews with senior executives and community leader talking about their success stories and challenges. The purpose would be to spotlight fast growing businesses and encourage networking within the SME and local community. Small and Medium sized enterprises represent over 90% of businesses. SMEs are building blocks and community pillars. They are the engines that fuel economy, job growth, innovation and prosperity, Elisha strongly believes. In addition, SMEs are backbone and foundations of our economy and vital to prosperity. The US India SME Council is set on a mission to assist and advocate on behalf of small, medium and women owned businesses. The council is dedicated to serve the SME community and increase the networking and learning opportunities through a new program “One Million Membership”. solving the challenge at our border by passing the comprehensive reform measures and delivering the additional funds for border security that President Biden has requested,” Jean-Pierre said. A group of Republican US Senators filed legislation earlier in April to extend the Trump administration’s Title 42 policy until 2025, which permits the deportation of illegal immigrants for public health reasons. (ANI) Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], December 28 (ANI): The Director General of Police, Odisha, Sunil Kumar Bansal on Tuesday ordered CIDCrime Branch to take over the enquiry into the “unnatural” death of two Russian nationals including a lawmaker in the Rayagada District. Earlier on Tuesday DGP said, “Four Russian tourists came to Rayagada district, one of them died probably because of a heart issue. We initiated an enquiry and police case was registered. A postmortem was conducted.” “After two days another person among them died in unnatural circumstances. We instructed CID to associate with enquiry and are in touch with the Russian consulate in Kolkata,” he added. Earlier in the evening, another two Russian nationals reached the crime branch office in Bhubaneswar from Rayagada. The first tourist was identified as B Vladimir and the other as Powel Anthem, as per their passport. According to sources, Anthem jumped off the third floor of the hotel in a suicide bid. Anthem’s guide arranged an ambulance and rushed him to the district headquarters hospital (DHH). However, he was declared dead after some time in the hospital. Anthem jumped off the third floor of the hotel soon after attending the funeral of Russian tourist Vladimir Videnov, who had been found dead inside the hotel room on Thursday (December 22), sources said. “The back-toback deaths of two Russian tourists in Rayagada town have become a matter of concern for the district administration,” sources added. US calls for ‘comprehensive’ immigration reforms after Supreme Court extends Trump-era border restrictions the ones President Biden proposed on his first day in office,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. The Secretary further added that the US is advancing preparations to manage the border in a secure, orderly, and humane way when Title 42 eventually lifts. “Today’s order gives Republicans in Congress plenty of time to move past political fingerpointing and join their Democratic colleagues in Odisha DGP orders CID probe into unnatural death of two Russian nationals
