The news of the raid was announced by Trump himself on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’. He issued the following statement on Monday evening (August 8th) confirming that FBI agents had arrived at his Mar-a-Lago Resort to execute a search warrant. He said that the raid was unannounced and inappropriate called the raid a whichhunt. “My beautiful home, Mara-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents, they even broke into my safe!...Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before. After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate. It is prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the Justice System, and an attack by Radical Left Democrats who desperately don’t want me to run for President in 2024, especially based on recent polls, and who will likewise do anything to stop Republicans and Conservatives in the upcoming Midterm Elections.” Based on media reports, the agents executed the search from 9.30 in the morning till 6 pm focusing on his personal quarters and offices at Mar-a-Lago. The raid, according to their claim, was conducted in relation with the ongoing investigation into Trump’s handling of presidential documents brought to Mar-a-Lago, which allegedly includes classified documents. Trump was not at the location, but was at his Trump Tower apartment complex in midtown Manhattan, New York. The story gains significance in that in the history of the United States, no president or senior public officials who have left office have ever been raided in this manner. The news of the raid has evoked public reactions from across the political spectrum both for and against the former president. The Democrats were elated as the Republicans sought accountability from both the Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Trump appointed FBI Director Christopher Wray both of whom have not yet commented on the raid. August 12, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Bihar: Nitish Kumar sworn in as CM for 8th time; Tejashwi Yadav to be his Deputy Patna (Bihar) [India], August 10 (ANI): Nitish Kumar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the eighth time at the Patna Raj Bhavan on Wednesday. This came a day after a huge political turmoil in the state, after which he broke the alliance of Janata Dal-United (JDU) with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and announced to form a new “Grand Alliance” which includes Tejashwi Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and other Opposition parties. The oath ceremony was attended by RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav and his wife Rajshri, former CM Rabri Devi and RJD leader Tej Pratap Yadav at the swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhavan in Patna. Meanwhile, Tejashwi Yadav also took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state. Seven parties including 164 MLAs along with independent MLA in our Mahagathbandhan, said Nitish Kumar at a joint presser with RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav after meeting Bihar Governor Phagu Chauhan on Tuesday. (ANI) DRDO-developed ATAGS to give 21 gun salute at Independence Day celebrations New Delhi [India], August 10 (ANI): For the first time in the history of India, the indigenously developed artillery gun ATAGS (Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System) prototype developed under the government’s Make in India initiative will be fired from the Red Fort during the Independence Day celebrations on August 15. The completely indigenous gun designed and developed by DRDO will give the ceremonial 21 Gun Salute along with the “25 Pounder British guns” which are traditionally fired till now. A team of DRDO‘s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune led by Scientists and Artillery Officers have been responsible for making this possible. SangamSinha,DG (R&M), DRDO said, “On the occasion of the elixir of freedom, folding cannon is a great gift for India. This is the longest-range cannon in the world and is capable of hitting targets from 45 to 48 km.” “The biggest thing is that for the first time it is Made in India by Bharat Forge. It is an indigenous artillery gun being used for the 21-gun salute on Independence Day. The ATAGS is developed by DRDO and is currently at the Red Fort. This will be a big support to the Indian Army,” he added. The ATAGS project was started in 2013 by DRDO to replace older guns in service in the Indian Army with a modern 155mm artillery gun. ARDE partnered with two private firms Bharat Forge Limited and Tata Advanced Systems Limited for the manufacturing of this specialised gun. ATAGS is a 155mm calibre Gun System with a firing range of 48 km and advanced features like high mobility, quick deployability, auxiliary power mode, advanced communication system, automatic command and control system with night capability in direct-fire mode. ATAGS is a worldclass system which fires the Bimodular charge system in Zone 7. No other Gun in the world is known to have that capability yet. ATAGS has already proved its mettle during the recently conducted summer trials and is currently undergoing DGQA evaluation. This gun system is designed to provide one of the best accuracy and consistency in gun systems compared to other gun systems of the same calibre in the world. ATAGS has been proven in extreme weather conditions and has gone through rigorous trials and evaluations. This specialised Gun System is compatible with C4I systems like the Artillery Combat Command and Control System (ACCCS) called Shakti for technical fire control, fire planning, deployment management, and operational logistics management of the Indian Army. August 12, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK We are witnessing death of democracy, Rahul Gandhi lashes out at Centre New Delhi [India], August 5 (ANI): Lashing out at the Centre on issues like price rise and inflation, former Congress Party President Rahul Gandhi on Friday said that India is witnessing the death of democracy. “How do you feel about the death of democracy? What this country built in 70 years was destroyed in 8 years. There is no democracy in India today!,” senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said while addressing a press conference in the national capital today. In a veiled attack on PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, two top-notch businessmen, Rahul Gandhi said, “Today, there is a dictatorship of 4 people in India. We want to raise the issue of inflation, unemployment etc. We want to discuss the society being divided.” “We (Opposition) are not allowed to speak in Parliament. We are arrested on the road. This is the condition of India today. Media can’t show courage in the current environment,” he added. Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Centre has put “its people” in government machineries. “In a democracy, the Opposition fights on the strength of institutions. Meaning the country has a legal structure, there is an electoral structure, which as on date, is the media of the country. But, in all these institutions, the Central government has put its people,” Rahul Gandhi said. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is holding a press conference at the party headquarters in New Delhi amid the ongoing protests by the Congress party in the national capital on issues of price rise and unemployment. Delhi Police officials have briefed security personnel at Vijay Chowk, ahead of the protests. Notably, Delhi Police has denied permission to Congress for holding protests. The police officials said that the prohibitory orders are in force in the national capital. The Delhi Police has imposed Section 144 CrPC in the entire area of the New Delhi district except for Jantar Mantar. The police said that protest/dharna/ gherao in the area of New Delhi district on August 5 cannot be permitted in view of security, law and order and traffic reasons. Senior Congress leader Ajay Maken earlier this week said that they had received a letter from the DCP that they can’t protest on August 5 and the AICC (All India Congress) was turned into a Police cantonment. “The government may suppress us as much as they want but we’ll protest against inflation, unemployment, GST on edible items and go ahead with our schedule even if jailed,” he said. Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge meanwhile sparred with Leader of the House Piyush Goyal on Thursday over ED summons issued to the Congress leaders. While Kharge accused the central government of trying to demoralise and intimidate the Opposition, Goyal responded by claiming that the government does not interfere in the functioning of law-enforcement agencies. This comes two days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) sealed the Young Indian Limited office located in the National Herald building on Wednesday. Rahul Gandhi had earlier said the investigation into the National Herald case was an intimidation tactic by the BJP. The case pertains to the alleged financial irregularities in the Congress-promoted Young Indian Private Limited, which owns the National Herald newspaper. “We are not afraid,” he said, adding, “Whatever they [BJP] do won’t make any difference. I will continue to do the work to protect our country, its democracy and brotherhood.” He added, “They think by putting a little pressure they can silence us. We won’t be silent. We will stand against what the BJP is doing. We will not be intimidated.” This protest also comes amidst the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament. Congress MP Manickam Tagore gives Adjournment Motion notice in Lok Sabha, to discuss the GST on several essential commodities. (ANI)

August 12, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Nitish Kumar resigns as Chief Minister of Bihar, breaks alliance with BJP Patna (Bihar) [India], August 9 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned on Tuesday breaking his alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Kumar, earlier in the day, held a meeting with the JD(U) leaders to discuss his next future political moves. He then sought time from Governor Phagu Chauhan. Around 4 pm, Kumar arrived at Raj Bhavan and met Governor Phagu Chauhan and apprised him of his decision to quit as the state chief minister. Earlier, in the JD(U) meeting today, all MLAs and MPs of the party supported chief minister Kumar’s decision and said that they were with him. They also asserted that they will continue to support Kumar in his decision. Police personnel were seen deployed in force outside the chief minister’s residence. According to sources, many JD(U) legislators told chief minister Kumar in today’s meeting that the alliance with the BJP had weakened them since 2020. Without naming Chirag Paswan, the legislators are reported to have recalled the actions of former Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief during the 2020 state assembly polls while warning the CM that if they were not alert, it would not be good for the party. Paswan had fielded his own candidates in all seats fought by the JD(U) in the 2020 polls, in what some have alleged was part of a plot of the BJP to consolidate its hold in the ruling coalition in the state. Meanwhile, a meeting of the RJDled Mahagathbandhan opposition alliance was also held here today at former chief minister Rabri Devi’s residence with the participation of leaders of the CPIML and the Congress – part of the Opposition ‘Mahagathbandhan’ alliance in the state. According to sources, after the meeting Rashtriya Janata Dal MLAs, MLCs and Rajya Sabha MP authorized party leader Tejashwi Yadav to take a decision and asserted their support to him. According to sources, Congress and Left parties MLAs have also expressed their supported to Yadav. Sources said that RJD party supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav is closely watching the developments but everything was being done by Tejashwi Yadav. Meanwhile, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya took to Twitter to post about an impending political change in the state.”Get ready for the coronation, lantern holder”, she tweeted in Hindi and added a ‘victory’ emoticon to it. The RJD-led Opposition in the state has said that it will welcome any re-alignment in Bihar’s ruling coalition without the BJP. Ahead of the RJD convened meeting today, Congress Bihar legislature party leader Ajit Sharma said: “If Nitish Kumar comes, we’ll welcome him. If he comes we will support him.A meeting of Mahagathbandhan is being held. We should take a decision to support (him) by considering Nitish Kumar as the CM but we’ll be able to tell you only after the meeting.” Bihar BJP leaders also met at deputy chief minister Tarkishore Prasad’s residence in Patna on Tuesday. Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar on Tuesday said that all party MPs and MLAs, who attended the party meeting on Tuesday, were of opinion that the party should leave the BJPled NDA alliance. “All MPs and MLAs reached a consensus that we should leave the NDA. Soon after, I resigned as Bihar CM,” Kumar told media persons here. “Meeting with the MPs, MLAs and MLCs were held today. Everyone’s wish was that we should leave NDA. So as everyone wished, we accepted the same and I submitted the resignation from the post of the Chief Minister in the NDA government,” he added. After tendering his resignation, Nitish Kumar left the Raj Bhavan and arrived at the residence of former Chief Minister Rabri Devi in Patna. Nitish Kumar submits list to Bihar governor, stakes claim to form new government Hours after resigning as Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar on Tuesday said that he has submitted a list of 164 MLAs to the Bihar Governor and staked claim to form a new government. “We submitted a list of 164 MLAs to the governor and staked claim to form a new government. He will let us know when oathtaking can take place,” Nitish told reporters. Notably, JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar has been elected as the leader of Mahagathbandhan or the Grand Alliance. Nitish Kumar called off the alliance between the JD(U) and BJP in Bihar and resigned as the state’s chief minister on Tuesday. Nitish Kumar met Tejashwi Yadav after resigning as CM and the duo is expected to meet the Governor to stake claim to the government. After meeting the Bihar Governor, JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar said, From thePoet’sPen INDIA THIS WEEK- July 12, 2022 If - Poem by Rudyard Kipling If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too: If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream---and not make dreams your master; If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same:. If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings, And never breathe a word about your loss: If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!” If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much: If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And---which is more---you’ll be a Man, my son! “We have the support of seven parties and one Independent MLA. The letter of support has been signed by all.” Former Union minister RCP Singh, who quit JD(U) amid a rift with Nitish Kumar, said that JD(U) snapping ties with BJP and joining hands with Tejashwi Yadav is a betrayal of the 2020 mandate. Meanwhile, the Bihar BJP has called a core group meeting this evening after JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar and RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav met the Governor and staked claim to form a new government. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned on Tuesday breaking his alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Kumar, earlier in the day, held a meeting with the JD(U) leaders to discuss his next future political moves. He then sought time from Governor Phagu Chauhan. INDIA THIS WEEK Address: P.O. August 12, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Members across the political divide are rivals, not enemies: Venkaiah Naidu at a farewell in Rajya Sabha New Delhi [India], August 8 (ANI): Urging members to maintain decency, dignity and decorum so that the image and respect of the House is maintained, outgoing Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said on Monday that members across political divide were not enemies but rivals and they must work hard to outshine each other like competitors but not to run down each other. In his remarks at the farewell in the Rajya Sabha where members cutting across party lines praised his handling of the House, Naidu said he will be moving around and talking to people on larger issues. Naidu said he had tears in his eyes after his name was decided as Vice Presidential nominee of the ruling NDA as he had to leave the BJP. “On the day, when I was selected to be the VicePresident of India and when the Prime Minister and the then President of the Party, to which I belong, told me in the Parliamentary Board meeting that I was being selected, I was in tears. I did not ask for this. But you know, as a disciplined soldier of the party and as the party had given the mandate, I obliged, and I resigned from the party,” he said. “There were tears not because of my shirking the responsibility but because I had to leave the party which had given me all this. That was the occasion. Otherwise, there was no problem at all. I did my best to maintain the dignity of the House and I tried to accommodate all sides — South, North, East, West and NorthEast. I tried to give opportunity to all sides of the House. I might not have given them enough time that they wanted but each one of you have been given time, whether it is Zero Hour or Special Mentions or Question Hour or discussion and debates on the Bills,” he said. He said people want the House to discuss, debate and decide. “They do not want the other D, that is, disrupt. Members always say, ‘Please do not pass the Bill in the din’. I do agree. For that, simple solution is that do not create din and do not pass the Bill in the din. This is my advice to all and also for the future because whoever is going to occupy the Chair will have to follow the precedents and go by the decisions taken earlier,” Naidu said. He said India is world’s largest parliamentary democracy and the members of the upper House of Parliament have a greater responsibility in the legislative structure. “The entire world is watching India. India is on the rise. India is on the move. I appeal to the members of the Rajya Sabha and to those who are going to come to this House in future, to maintain decency, dignity and decorum so that the image and respect of the House is maintained and people will be receptive to show us, to hear us and also to follow our advice,” he said. Noting that people watch proceedings of the House, Naidu said sometimes he has had act strictly to maintain decorum but he was not happy naming members. “It gives me no enjoyment to take such extreme action. I have no ill-will against anybody or any party.” Naidu said he will later speak regarding normal feeling about politicians and all. “I don’t want to utilize this forum. The respect is declining everywhere because value systems are declining.” He said members should follow the democratic principles and the standards set by great leaders. “I am not of that type as people often talk, either it is precedent, or dissident and, otherwise, resident. I am not going to do this. I never asked making great contribution. Brilliant speeches are made. Sometimes, brilliance is lost because of disturbances.” He said that media does not adequately report constructive debates. “Unfortunately, in our country, the weakness is that the media also does not report if you speak constructively. If you for precedent, never became speak obstructively and do something unusual, it gets to residence. I will be mov- coverage. It is weakness of ing around — going around, the media, and media should meeting, greeting and talking get out of it at the earliest to you all on larger issues. I without trying to give some will not get into politics, as I reasons here and there.” Noting that the told you. We are all working in our own ways. We are not issue of language is quite dear to him, Naidu said he enemies; we are rivals.” “We must work was happy that the President, hard to outshine each other the Prime Minister, the like competitors but not Chief Justice are speaking to run down each other. in not the same language This is my last advice to “but in the same vein on all of you. My wish is, respecting our respective Parliament functions well,” mother tongues”. “First he added. He said there are mother tongue, afterwards many members who are brother tongue or any other very good speakers when tongue, no problem. But, given opportunities. “I see primacy should be given even the new Members to mother tongue. Please coming prepared and encourage mother tongue AAP demands Centre to provide free education, healthcare, electricity, unemployment allowance in country New Delhi [India], August 8 (ANI): Lashing out at the Centre for disturbing the peaceful atmosphere of the country, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Monday demanded the central government to provide good free education, healthcare, unemployment allowance for people in the country. “An atmosphere is being created that giving free education, free electricity and free water is a crime. They (BJP) waived off debt some people. It is being said amongst people that some of them are their friends. No one is talking about it,” said Kejriwal while addressing a short presser today. Kejriwal said, “As we celebrate 75 years of Independence, I demand the Central government to provide good free units of electricity and unemployment allowance in the country. Those who call it ‘Revdi’ are traitors of the country.” In July this year, the Prime Minister had said, “This Revdi culture (or the freebies culture) is dangerous for the development of the country. Those with Revdi culture will never build new expressways, new airports or defence corridors for you. Together, we have to defeat this mentality, remove Revdi culture from the politics of the country.” Responding to this, Kejriwal addressed a rally in Gujarat on Sunday and said, “These people abuse me saying that ‘Kejriwal is looting money, distributing free revdi’. Kejriwal is not going to Swiss Bank with money, he is wasting public money on the public.” In a sharp attack against its opponents, Kejriwal on Sunday said that Gujarat Congress will soon merge with the Gujarat BJP unit as they have “love brewing” between them. “The election of Gujarat will be between AAP and BJP. Gujarat Congress is going to merge with Gujarat BJP. (I love you) ILU-ILU of BJPCongress will end. On one hand, there is “27 years of misrule” of the BJP and on the other hand, there is “new politics” of AAP,” Kejriwal said while addressing a press conference on Sunday. Keeping the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections in mind, Kejriwal on Sunday made a bunch of promises for the people of Gujarat ranging from providing a free electricity supply to improving the healthcare services in the state. The Aam Aadmi Party leader claimed that about 25 lakh households in Punjab have just recently got electricity bills of zero rupees and many of the people residing in Delhi are also privileged for the same. Notably, AAP is in power both in Punjab and Delhi. Arvind Kejriwal was on a two-day visit to Gujarat from Saturday as part of his campaign ahead of the Assembly polls likely to be held in December this year. (ANI) in your respective areas. I would like to see in my lifetime that the Parliament, the Assemblies and also the school, college, university, vocational courses and also the administration, everything should be carried in their respective state can be translation,” he said. “There should be translation. I told the Secretariat and I am telling you all today, before I leave, there has to be a permanent mechanism. I will come to sign morning. I told them whether the House is there or not that for all speeches, translation should be made available, not at request even otherwise also. That is the process that has to start,” he added. He said Indian languages should be encouraged. “ T h e administration also, and also, I want to the see the arguments in courts, district courts, High Courts and Supreme Court, also in respective Indian languages…it is because people who come to the courts, they do not know English. They will not be able to understand the judgements. So, it should be. But it will take time, I am aware of it. An honest beginning has to be made, and we all should move in the direction and having communication in our respective mother tongues, that is, encourage Indian languages,” he said. Naidu said he is thankful to the Prime Minister who has given him love and affection. “I am thankful to all the ministerial colleagues who have all responded to my queries any time for consultation on larger developmental issues. I would like to thank the Leader of the Opposition and other leaders on this side who have cooperated with me and also the Members from different political parties who have given a helping hand and who have all today participated in the discussion and said so many good things about me. I am really moved by your love and affection,” Naidu said. (ANI)

Over 80,000 women candidates register for Indian Navy’s Agniveer scheme New Delhi [India], August 4 (ANI): As the registration for the Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR) and Matric Recruit(MR) concluded on Wednesday, the Indian Navy received over 80,000 applications from women candidates, informed the officials. The recruitment of the abovementioned profiles will be done under the Agnipath scheme. “Indian Navy‘s SSR (Senior Secondary Recruit) & MR (Matric Recruit) registration process towards the #Agn ipathRecruitmentScheme has been completed. 9.55 lakh Agniveer applicants including 82,000 women aspirants have registered,” tweeted the official handle of Indian Navy. Focusing on gender-neutrality in all its branches, the Indian Navy on June 20 announced its decision to recruit women sailors, through the newly-unveiled Agnipath recruitment scheme. While all the three services – Army, Air Force and Navy – have had women officers, this will be the first time that positions of Personnel Below Officers’ Rank (PBOR) will be open to women. “We are still formulating the exact number of women sailors to be recruited through the Agnipath scheme,” Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of Personnel said in a tri-service press conference at the Ministry of Defence here on Sunday, adding that the training of the first batch of Agniveers will begin in November this year. “Indian Navy has 30 women officers at present sailing on different Indian Navy ships. We have decided that under the Agnipath scheme, we will recruit women also. They will be deployed on warships also,” he added. He further informed that the arrangements are being made at INS Chilka in Odisha – the basic training establishment for the Indian Navy, to accommodate the women sailors. “From November 21 this year, the first naval ‘Agniveers’ will start reaching the training establishment INS Chilka, Odisha. Both female and male Agniveers are allowed for this,” Tripathi said. The “transformative” Agnipath scheme, announced by Union Minister Rajanath Singh on June 14, in the presence of the three service chiefs provides for the recruitment of into the armed services of youths in the age bracket of 17-anda-half-years to 21 for only four years with a provision to retain 25 per cent of them for 15 more years. The Centre later extended the upper age limit to 23 years for recruitment in 2022. The Union Cabinet also approved the Agnipath scheme on June 14 and the youth selected under this scheme will be known as Agniveers. The government had announced that 46,000 Agniveers to be recruited this year. It had said that the armed forces will have “a younger, fitter, diverse profile” to face future challenges. There have been protests against the Agnipath scheme in some states and the government has announced support measures to allay apprehensions.
