The Fun Palace 6

Cedric Price

The fun palace was designed by Cedric Price

and Joan Littlewood, the idea was to provide a space with particular facilities but to give the space no specific purpose, this would allow the user to interperet and use the space however they wanted, there were no “physical or psychological constrains”.It was a space designed for freedom. The plan was to design small areas for dancing, music, drama and fireworks, to make these spaces suitable to each individual user the form needed to be easily manipulated. The structure was made up of parts including a flexible steel framework that could be dismantled at any point, this has lead to the design being described as “plug in programmable spaces.” 7
