INDIA THIS WEEK FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23 2026 Pia Dandiya Seeks to Make History as Florida’s First Indian-American Congresswoman By Geeta Goindi October 19, 2026 – Indian-American educator, former White House Fellow and technology executive Pia Dandiya is seeking to make history as the first person of Indian origin to represent Florida in the U.S. Congress, as she runs for the state’s 22nd Congressional District seat in the November 3 midterm elections. The Democratic nominee, whose parents immigrated to the United States from India, faces Republican businessman and Marine Corps veteran Casey Askar in a closely watched race for an open seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Dandiya is making her first bid for elected office after a career spanning the public and private sectors. Her story is rooted in the aspirations of her immigrant parents. Her father, Dr. Rohit Dandiya, pursued a career in medicine, while her mother worked in education. Originally from Jaipur, India, the couple settled in South Florida, where they raised their family. “I was born and raised in Palm Beach County to parents from India in pursuit of the American Dream,” Dandiya states on her campaign website. “I am running for Congress to make that American Dream more within reach for others – to lower our costs and to stand up to the corruption in DC that has big corporations and billionaires calling the shots while Floridians pay the price,” she says. From the Classroom to the White House Dandiya began her career teaching middle and high school students in economically disadvantaged communities. At just 28, she became the founding principal of a high school in Harlem, New York, making her one of the youngest high school principals in the country. According to her campaign biography, 86 percent of her students came from low-income families, yet every graduate earned admission to college. “As a principal, I learned that leadership means putting the people you serve first,” she says. “I will bring that same standard to Washington.” She subsequently became a White House Fellow, serving with the Domestic Policy Council and the U.S. Department of Education under Democratic and Republican administrations. Dandiya later joined Apple, where she worked with state and local governments to modernize education, healthcare and other public services through technology. Her congressional campaign focuses on affordability, particularly the rising costs of housing, property insurance and healthcare in South Florida. She also advocates stronger public schools, expanded educational opportunities and greater government accountability. Dandiya secured the Democratic nomination in Florida’s August 18 primary, defeating attorney Kaysia Earley. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee selected her for its Red to Blue program, which supports candidates in targeted House races. The Indian-American Presence in Congress Dandiya’s candidacy comes at a significant moment for Indian-American political representation in Washington. Six lawmakers of Indian origin currently serve in the U.S. House of Representatives: Ami Bera and Ro Khanna of California, Pramila Jayapal of Washington, Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois, Shri Thanedar of Michigan and Suhas Subramanyam of Virginia. All are Democrats. The group is informally known as the “Samosa Caucus,” a reference to their shared Indian heritage. Its composition is set to change following the 2026 elections. Krishnamoorthi chose to pursue a U.S. Senate seat rather than seek House reelection but lost the Democratic primary. Thanedar, meanwhile, was defeated in his congressional primary. Among those seeking election are Dandiya in Florida and physician Amish Shah, the Democratic nominee in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District. Indian American Impact, a political organization working to increase South Asian representation in American politics, has endorsed both candidates as part of its efforts to expand the community’s presence in Congress. Dandiya and her husband, Navneet Alag, have a son, Sahib, whose future is among the motivations she cites for entering politics. “I am running for Congress to fight for a future worthy of my students and my son,” she says on her campaign website. Her candidacy reflects a broader evolution in the Indian-American experience, from immigrant families building lives in America to subsequent generations seeking a voice in the nation’s political leadership. A victory on November 3 would mark another milestone in that journey. that Indian citizens, like Americans, are entitled to transparent and equitable electoral processes. “Non-violent resistance movements are essential in these moments, and I stand with the Indian people who are engaging in non-violent protests to counter anti-democratic efforts in India,” Jayapal said. According to data released by the Election Commission of India, approximately 72 million entries were removed from draft electoral rolls across 13 states and union territories during the first two phases of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). During the ongoing third phase, which covers the publication of draft electoral rolls across 18 states and union territories, the number of excluded electors stands at 61.6 million. Addressing the omissions, the commission clarified that eligible voters whose names were inadvertently excluded during the SIR process can seek reinstatement through the claims and objections mechanism, followed by the submission of Form 6. (ANI) “Unacceptable Interference”: Indian Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra Criticizes US Lawmaker Pramila Jayapal Over Claims of 130 Million Voters Removed From Rolls WASHINGTON, October 15 (ANI) — India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, has strongly criticized recent statements by US Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal concerning India’s democratic framework and electoral procedures. In a post on X, Kwatra responded to remarks by the Indian American congresswoman regarding the removal of voters’ names from draft electoral rolls. “The remarks by @RepJayapal on India’s electoral and political processes are unacceptable interference in India’s internal affairs. India is a vibrant democracy, with robust, independent constitutional institutions and a longstanding record of free and fair elections. Always open to constructive conversation with the Congresswoman to dispel her misconceptions,” Kwatra wrote. Jayapal had earli- er drawn criticism following her remarks on India’s electoral procedures, alleging that a large number of citizens were being removed from voter rolls. “I am deeply concerned about the actions of the Indian government to purge 130 million people from the voting rolls,” Jayapal said in a post on X, marking the first time a US legislator had publicly commented on the matter. The Democratic representative from Washington state also expressed support for peaceful demonstrations against what she described as “anti-democratic efforts in India.” Drawing a comparison with domestic political developments, Jayapal said the situation resembled strategies employed by the Trump administration concerning voting rights in the United States. I feel confident in my future, and Madhya Pradesh: 12 dead, several injured as truck runs over devotees near Gwalior’s Sheetla Mata temple Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh) [India], October 18 (ANI): At least 12 people have died and several others have been injured after an out-of-control truck crashed into devotees gathered near the Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior late Saturday night, breaking through a police checkpoint and damaging the temple’s gate and outer wall. According to Gwalior Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dharmveer Singh, the incident occurred at around 1:30 AM when a paddy-laden truck travelling from the Chhinor direction lost control on a steep slope where heavy vehicles are restricted. The truck reportedly broke through police barricades before running over pilgrims on the road and crashing into the temple’s outer wall and gate. “This is a tragic incident where pilgrims were travelling to Sheetla Mata Temple in large numbers. The road coming from the Chhinor side has a steep slope where heavy traffic is restricted. Around 1.30 AM, a truck loaded with paddy was stopped there. It broke through the police barricades, suddenly lost control, came down, and crashed into the outer wall and gate of the temple. The devotees who were on the road were crushed underneath it, leading to this accident,” Singh said.”Two police personnel who were on duty at the spot were also injured, and their treatment is ongoing,” he added. The SSP said 39 people had been taken to hospital following the incident, of whom 12 died. At least five to six patients were critically injured, while others sustained minor injuries.” According to the information received so far, a total of 39 people have been taken to the hospital, out of which 12 people have died. 5 or 6 patients are critically injured with fractures, while the rest sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving treatment,” he said. Gwalior Collector Ruchika Chauhan also detailed the incident, saying that after receiving the information regarding the accident, ambulances and other vehicles were dispatched for the relief operation. She said that 29 people have sustained various injuries.” Today, at around 1.30 AM, information was received that a truck coming from the direction of Chhinor towards the temple lost control and veered continuously to the left. Immediately, news of the accident started coming in, and ambulances and other vehicles were dispatched. 11 people have lost their lives in this inci- dent, and 5 to 6 patients are critically injured. Around 29 people have sustained various injuries,” she said. Chauhan noted that authorities had launched an investigation into how the truck managed to pass through the barricades and police checkpoint established along the road during Navratri.”A stopper and a police checkpoint were present on that road during Navratri, so how the vehicle managed to get inside is a matter of investigation. We have also sent an RTO team to inspect the truck mechanically and find out what issue occurred and how it veered to the left,” she said. She added, “As for the injured undergoing treatment, the team is continuously performing CT scans and X-rays to ensure their treatment is properly aligned.” An eyewitness of the scene and brother of an injured person said that the truck was overloaded. It came suddenly and lost control, killing several people on the spot.” This occurred at around 1 AM. I saw some people die on the spot. The truck was overloaded; it came suddenly and ran over some shops and people. My brother also sustained injuries. There is still chaos at the spot of the incident,” he said. Further details are awaited. (ANI)

INDIA THIS WEEK FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23 2026 Indian Government, US Lawmakers Condemn Alleged Hindu Temple Shooting Plot in Illinois AURORA, Illinois / WASHINGTON, October 19, 2026 — Indian officials, US lawmakers and Hindu community organizations have condemned an alleged white supremacist plot to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois, calling for stronger protections for religious communities and decisive action against hate-motivated violence. The case has drawn widespread attention after a 19-year-old man, identified by police as Alexandros Paporakis, was arrested in connection with an alleged plan to attack the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple in Aurora, near Chicago. US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi revealed that he and his family were worshipping at the temple when the alleged attack was attempted on October 11. Authorities say the investigation began after police received information about a potential mass shooting. The suspect has been charged with making a terrorist threat, a Class X felony under Illinois law, and unlawful possession of weapons. A judge ordered him detained following a hearing on October 14. India expresses concern over anti-India hate India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep concern over the reported plot, describing its alleged anti-Hindu and racist character, including references to violence against people of Indian origin, as particularly disturbing. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the incident added to growing concerns about racist hostility and anti-India hate in the United States. He called for greater vigilance, zero tolerance for hate-motivated violence and decisive action to protect the Indian community. India also urged US authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, bring those responsible to justice and take all necessary measures to prevent similar incidents. The statement reflected New Delhi’s concern about the safety and security of Indian nation- als and people of Indian origin in the United States, particularly amid reports of threats targeting religious institutions. Congressman recounts family’s experience Krishnamoorthi, who represents Illinois’ 8th Congressional District, said he and his family were at their Hindu temple in Aurora on the day of the alleged incident. In a statement posted on X, he thanked the people who alerted law enforcement and helped prevent a potential tragedy. He also called for a united response to anti-Indian hatred and white supremacy. Recalling the incident in a later account, the congressman said the suspect’s firearm reportedly jammed, allowing his family and others to escape. He described the experience as deeply disturbing and said it had strengthened his resolve to speak out against hatred. Krishnamoorthi warned that authorities and communities must take threats of hate-motivated violence seriously before lives are lost. Police describe evidence recovered According to the Palatine Police Department, investigators began examining the case on October 11 after the Mount Prospect Police Department shared information about a potential mass shooting. The information reportedly originated with an individual who received concerning electronic communications from the suspect. Investigators said Paporakis had shared a document outlining an alleged plan to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple, along with images of a rifle, rifle magazines, body armour and other tactical equipment. Police subsequently located and arrested him as he was leaving his residence. A search of his home reportedly uncovered a rifle, multiple loaded rifle magazines, hundreds of additional rounds of ammunition, tactical equipment and other items considered relevant to the investigation. Among the items recovered was a tactical vest containing body armour and a patch displaying imagery associated with white supremacist extremism. Investigators also examined a document attributed to the suspect titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto).” According to police, it contained white supremacist and extremist statements, including references to violence against people of South Asian heritage, particularly those of Indian descent. Detectives believe the suspect may have been planning to carry out the attack on October 11, potentially targeting a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area. The allegations have not been established as proven facts in court. Hindu organizations urge vigilance The Hindu Mandir Empowerment Council (HMEC), also referred to as the American Hindu Mandir Council in coverage of its response, urged temples and devotees to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity promptly. The council condemned hatred, violence and intimidation directed at religious communities, emphasizing that timely reporting and swift law enforcement action had helped prevent what could have been a devastating tragedy. The appeal came during Hindu Heritage Month and the festival season, when temples across the United States host prayers, celebrations and community gatherings. HMEC also cited a recent attack on a Hindu temple in Ohio, saying the incidents underscored the need for continued vigilance and greater attention to threats against Hindu places of worship. The council called on Hindu communities to remain united against hatred and reaffirmed the principle that devotees should be able to worship freely, peacefully and without fear. Indian-American community leader Ajay Jain Bhutoria, a former member of President Joe Biden’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, also condemned the alleged plot. He urged the White House and the Department of Justice to strengthen security at Hindu temples and address anti-Indian hostility. Aurora mayor condemns alleged plot Aurora Mayor John Laesch described the reported plot as deeply disturbing and said no one should feel threatened for practising their faith. In a statement issued by the city, Laesch emphasized that Aurora’s diversity was a source of strength and that residents deserved to live and worship without fear, regardless of their religious or cultural background. He thanked law enforcement officials and the individual who alerted authorities, crediting the tip with helping prevent a potentially devastating incident. Laesch also expressed solidarity with the affected temple and the wider community, stating that hatred, discrimination, bigotry and threats of violence against residents because of their religious backgrounds would not be tolerated. Lawmakers call for federal investigation The alleged plot also prompted calls for federal scrutiny. US India Caucus co-chairs Ro Khanna and Rich McCormick called on the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate the case as a potential federal hate crime and pursue any additional charges supported by the evidence. They also urged investigators to determine whether anyone had encouraged, assisted or coordinated with the suspect, either online or offline. Khanna separate- ly emphasized Hinduism’s teachings on non-violence and called for the suspect to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, consistent with the evidence and applicable legal procedures. Renewed focus on religious freedom and security The alleged plot has heightened concerns among Hindu Americans and other communities about threats directed at religious institutions. The incident has also renewed calls for improved communication between temples and law enforcement, prompt reporting of credible threats and appropriate security measures at places of worship. For the Indian government and community representatives, the case raises broader questions about how authorities can address racist hostility and protect people of Indian origin from violence. As the investigation continues, officials and community leaders have emphasized that religious freedom must be protected and that threats against any faith community should be taken seriously. The suspect’s guilt remains to be determined through the judicial process. Authorities have urged vigilance while the case proceeds.

INDIA THIS WEEK India to Host Inaugural SCO Civilisation Dialogue Forum by YearEnd: Rajnath Singh DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, October 20 (ANI) — Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday announced that India will host the first Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Civilisation Dialogue Forum by the end of this year, inviting all member countries to participate in the initiative aimed at strengthening cultural ties and mutual understanding. Addressing the SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, Singh highlighted India’s longstanding friendship with Tajikistan and its close ties with Central Asian countries. “At the end of this year, India will host the first SCO Civilisation Dialogue Forum. We invite all SCO countries to participate in it,” Singh said. The defense minister also referred to the SCO’s 25-year journey, noting that leaders had reviewed the organization’s achievements and dis- cussed its future during the SCO Summit in Bishkek. “India gives great importance to our long-standing friendship with Tajikistan and our bond with Central Asian countries. During the SCO Summit in Bishkek, our leaders had outlined the 25 years of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. That occasion was about reviewing our shared journey as well as deliberating on the path to the future,” he said. Singh recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for concrete steps to strengthen security, connectivity and opportunities across the SCO region, adding that the message remained particularly relevant to the Council of Heads of Government. During his address, Singh also stressed the need for a collective and uncompromising approach to combating terrorism, describing it as one of the most serious threats to peace and development. “Terrorism not only causes the loss of innocent lives but also disrupts investment and commerce. It radicalizes society and deprives our youth of the opportunities they deserve,” he said. Emphasizing that there should be no double standards in tackling terrorism, Singh called for the dismantling of the entire ecosystem supporting it. “There should be no double standards in dealing with terrorism, and no place for those who finance, support or provide safe havens to terrorists. The entire ecosystem of terrorism must be firmly and collectively dismantled,” he added. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar was also present at the meeting. On the sidelines of the SCO gathering, Singh met with Tajikistan Prime Minister Qohir Rosulzoda and Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref. (ANI) Indian Railways maintains consistent punctuality despite heavy passenger demand New Delhi [India], October 21 (ANI): Despite heavy demand, Indian Railways continues to take its passengers safely, comfortably and with consistent and increased punctuality. This is being done through improved monitoring, timetable rationalisation, better maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. The railways said that it has improved from 69.2% in 2018-19 to 77.43 in 2025-26 & 77.11% in 2026-27 (till now) if punctuality data are taken into consideration. It said that consistent performance on more than 77 per cent punctuality in the last three years, including the current year, is an improved performance from the year 2023-24, when it was 73.62 per cent. According to Indian Railways, the punctuality figures currently circulating on social media are being used out of context and are therefore mis- leading. It said that one can not compare two years when trains in India were not running in full capacity; hence, the higher punctuality of Indian trains during the COVID period is definitely not an apt reference for comparison. Once normal operations resumed, punctuality returned closer to the longterm average and has been steadily improving again, the release said. Railways again reiterated that the unusually high figures of 2020-21 and 2021-22 were recorded when very few trains were running due to the pandemic. Meanwhile, Indian Railways achieved a significant milestone in expanding rail connectivity and enhancing passenger amenities in Chhattisgarh. In the esteemed presence of the Chief Minister, Vishnu Deo Sai, and the Union Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Tadoki–Raoghat and Abhanpur–Kurud broadgauge rail lines were inaugurated. On this occasion, new passenger train services—Raoghat–Raipur and Raipur–Kurud—were flagged off. Additionally, the foundation stone was laid for an Electric Locomotive Maintenance Facility in Raipur. The Union Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, participated in the event via video conferencing. The arrival of a train in Raoghat for the first time since independence marks a historic achievement in connecting the remote regions of southern Chhattisgarh to the national rail network. These projects and new passenger services will strengthen regional connectivity and provide citizens with improved travel facilities. (ANI) FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23 2026 All Nine Indian Seafarers Aboard Chemical Tanker YARA J Safe in Romania: Embassy B U C H A R E S T, Romania, October 17 (ANI) — All nine Indian seafarers aboard the chemical tanker YARA J are safe, and the vessel has arrived at Romania’s Port of Constanta, the Indian Embassy in Bucharest said Saturday. The confirmation came after India’s Ambassador to Romania, Manoj Mohapatra, spoke with Romanian authorities and the tanker’s company security officer. In a statement shared on X, the diplomatic mission said, “Amb. Manoj Mohapatra spoke with Romanian authorities, including SAR Romania and MRCC Constanta, as well as the CSO of the chemical tanker YARA J (IMO: 9221803). It was confirmed that all nine Indian seafarers on board are safe and the vessel has arrived at the Port of Constanta. According to posts published by the embassy on X, “Three Indian nationals, Shri Sahil Sandhu, Shri Ashwini Kumar and Shri Harman Singh, departed for India today. The Embassy provided all necessary support and assistance to facilitate their return.” The embassy also expressed its appreciation, saying, “We express our sincere gratitude to the Romanian authorities, Constanta County Hospital, and the Romanian rescue teams for their invaluable assistance, cooperation and support.” The three individuals were rescued from the vessel on October 6. On October 7, New Delhi strongly condemned attacks on commercial vessels across the Black Sea region and renewed its call for dialogue and diplomatic engagement to ease regional tensions and restore peace. Speaking at a regular media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that strikes targeting commercial shipping threaten maritime trade and place seafarers in serious danger. “We have seen a string of attacks targeting commercial vessels in the Black Sea region in the last one or two days. We condemn such attacks that threaten commercial shipping and endanger the lives of our seafaring community. First, the commercial vessel MV Royad Mammadov came under attack while it was sailing in the Black Sea. There were three Indian nationals on board. All of them are safe, but one of them got injured, and he is receiving treatment. We thank the Romanian authorities, who lent us a helping hand and have been very helpful in this particular incident,” Jaiswal said. (ANI)
