certain death in China’s Daxing Prison not once, not twice, but three times… When Bruce was thrown into his cell at Daxing on the second floor, it was occupied with only Chinese prisoners who had already heard the false rumor the D5 agents told the jail guards “Bruce Gorcyca was a wanted pedophile back in Canada and America and was coaching Chinese kids in Beijing how to play baseball, Soccer, and American Football.. The coaching part was indeed true but the pedophile part was a total fabrication designed to get Bruce Gorcyca killed and eliminate a disclosure threat of massive FBI and other corruption. Within minutes of his arrival Bruce knew he would soon be fighting for his life when some of the Chinese prisoners began asking him about how many kids he allegedly assaulted. Bruce got down on his knees and prayed to God asking him for the strength and courage to endure the beating that would be forthcoming. A calm replaced the overwhelming fear as Bruce heard a voice telling him “I am at your side, trust in me and you shall prevail. Bruce was then told… “You need not do battle with all these men, only the biggest one. Like David your Goliath shall fall”. Bruce hoped that he was not hallucinating and when they closed in on him, he followed the instructions he heard. The tall and athletic Chinese Bruce targeted was almost six foot three and weighed almost 300 pounds and Bruce Gorcyca thought of his wife and children as he recalled his wrestling moves from high school and self-defense he learned in the military at basic training. He dove for the giant’s ankles and then used his leverage to knock the big man to the ground. It was not difficult because the big guy had his balance stolen and he fell like a tree hitting his head against the concrete wall. Without letting up for a second Bruce sat on his chest and began pummeling his face until he broke his nose and blood began flowing not only from his nose but also his ears. 1
sight of blood, especially when it is their own. Bruce Gorcyca jumped up and shouted “下 一个！”(Next!). Nobody went near him as the guards dragged Goliath out the door. Later when Bruce was saying his even prayers, the prisoners asked him what he was doing since they do not believe in any God. Bruce explained that he was thanking his God for the victory. They asked him why he was not afraid to fight Guo (the Big man) and Bruce explained that he does not fear any man because his God always protects him. There was silence in the cell and Bruce told them he never assaulted any child, had two of his own and was a political prisoner back I America. He urged them to find God, and they too would have a lifetime guardian and protector. The next day, three of the prisoners asked for a Bible and were beaten by the guards for asking. Bruce began teaching five of them what he was taught as a Child at St. Charles Borremeo Church in Parma Ohio, and they were amazed with the stories of Genesis, the creation, Garden of Eden etc. None of them ever questioned the power of God, and only new prisoners who did not witness the first fight would pick fights with Bruce thereafter – about fifteen fights in all. Bruce won all but three of those fights. Roughly about 9 months later after Bruce spent the day praying for his family back in Canada especially his elderly mother-in-law who was close with him. Bruce went to sleep. A few hours later Bruce was awakened by a strange, surreal dream of his wife being overwhelmed at home. When he fell back asleep he was visited in yet another dream by his mother-in-law who told him “we need you here, not there” In his dream Bruce explain his predicament of being kept incommunicado with no lawyer or judge to speak with. His mother-in-law reflected upon the problem and then just said “Don’t eat”. She said it three times and then just faded away. 2

He finally realize that if he went on a hunger strike, eventually the prison would have to hospitalize him where he would have access to medical staff and probably a telephone as well. Bruce was no stranger to hunger strikes and he knew the first week would be the most difficult but form his past ordeals in Miami and Canada, he knew he could endure two weeks without food so long as he had water and slept as much as possible. Bruce’s very spiritual mother-in-law is seen here with his son and wife when they came to visit Bruce in China in 2010. Her message to Bruce inspired him to launch his 21 day hunger strike He began his hunger strike and informed the guards he would not eat until he could make a telephone call. The guards just laughed and poked fun at Bruce for the first five days but then tried to trick him into eating after a week. After 10 days, they notified the U.S. embassy and asked them repeatedly to Bring Bruce Gorcyca a new passport so he could be released. The embassy refused without explanation. In reality the Chinese feared that Bruce Gorcyca might die in their custody and they had not filed any criminal charges that would justify the detention past 15 days which was the maximum “administrative detention” they could dole out for an expired visa or passport. It was not a criminal offense. Sometime after day 17 however, Bruce began having breathing problems and was coughing every two or three minutes. They brought in a woman doctor from Peking University Hospital who examined Bruce and insisted he be rushed to their ER and diagnosed “Severe Pneumonia”. It was however, a weekend, and no top supervisors were on duty. She called an ambulance and told the guards to notify the warden that Bruce might not survive another 24 hoiurs if he was not taken immediately to the hospital. The warden did not allow Bruce to be taken to the high 3
China Japan Friendship hospital in Chaoyang District where Doctors Zhang, Ma, and the Hospital Director Dr. Zu attended to him. Bruce would remain in private room 210 with six armed guards for two weeks that it took to recover and they promised to release him from custody if he allowed them to feed him with an IV and then solid food after 2 days. Bruce would then meet a nurse who was almost fluent in English. Once again the power of prayer saved Bruce yet again. The final rescue with Paul James would also be an act of God as was Vincent Chong. None of the FBI’s devious D5 efforts were a match for God. But yet a third miracle took place that if not an Act of God would have to be the world’s biggest coincidence of all time. Just as Bruce was to be released by the Chinese authorities when they feared Bruce might cause an international scandal if he were to die in their custody without any formal charges ever filed against him, an “anonymous tip” was conveniently received claiming Bruce was an American spy working for the CIA and that is why he took the unique job teaching all the top leaders at the China Academy of Governance including Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Governors, Mayors, SOE executives, and even the SAFEA Director and Governor of China’s Central Bank. Although totally false this tip had to be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated. Two teams of MSS agents (Ministry of State Security) took six days taking turns to interrogate Bruce using sleep deprivation, drugs, a unusual optical device, threats of torture and the promise to kidnap his son if he withheld his cooperation. One of the interrogators was instantly recognized by Bruce and vice versa, yet they had not seen each other in over 7 years. The interrogator was once actually an English student of Bruce’s who at the time was a lowly newby detective working in the economic crimes division of the Police Department. The had spent over 100 hours of tutoring time together and perhaps another 50 hours socializing, drinking, playing Scrabble, and Chinese poker together. “Ping” (not their real name, knew Bruce was not a spy without a doubt, and quietly worked behind the scenes to clear up all the doubts. What are the odds that in a city of 25 million, a top MSS investigator assigned to investigate Bruce would be a once good friend of his? Indeed, God works in strange ways and even the MSS agent, who is required to be an atheist had to admit it! Bruce Bruce was returned to his isolation cell to await the outcome of the spy investigation and then learned that the Chinese had offered to exchange him for a Chinese woman named Meng who was arrested in Canada allegedly for laundering money for her father the President of Huawei. It was later learned that neither Canada nor the U.S. wanted Bruce to be returned and was not interested in how long he might remain jailed. The last miracle came in a pair in the form of two new prisoners named Vincent Chong from Malaysian and Canadian Paul James, a local News Anchor for CRI radio in Beijing. Because he was a celebrity in the English-Speaking community the Chinese police wanted to make an example of paul so they locked him for 30 days at the same Daxing prison where Bruce Gorcyca was being kept and due to extreme overcrowding of the prison, they put him in the same cell as Bruce Gorcyca with 15 Chinese prisoners for a long holiday weekend. This was the first time Bruce Gorcyca got to see and talk with 4
jail management saw Bruce now had an external communication channel. Bruce told Paul about his incommunicado status and asked him to please relay some messages for him to family, friends. And a lawyer when he got released. Paul agreed to help to do something even better. Bruce wrote a rescue not on a piece of paper about 1 inch by 5 inches long with names and phone numbers for Paul to call. They rolled it up, put in a piece of plastic garbage bag, and on Tuesday morning when they came to get Paul for deportation, Paul went to the bathroom and inserted the note far up into his rectum to avoid the full body and cavity search every prisoner gets on the way in and out of Daxing. When he arrived back in Canada, Paul call the first number 336-918-0507 (Chuck Arnold) who then called Bruce’s wife. Without a doubt God answered Bruce’s daily prayers and sent Paul to Daxing to rescue Bruce, just as God saved him twice before. If not for this hero Paul James, a radio news man now working in Vancouver, Bruce Gorcyca would still be in that Chinese Dungeon or dead. Back in 2018-2019, Paul was the radio news announcer for CRI Radio in Beijing when he was arrested for smoking a joint in his own apartment. The other half to this Miracle was Vincent Chong a Chinese working in Kuala Lumpur was doing business in Shanghai. The people who were trying to pressure Vince into caving on some negotiations deliberately prolonged the squabbling to the point where Vince’s visa expired. But Chong was assured that if he acquiesced and conceded on the negotiations his expired visa would never be reported to the immigration police. Chong 5
