The policy change has raised concerns among Indian students and professionals, creating uncertainty over their academic and career plans in the United States. According to a final rule published in the Federal Register by the Department of Homeland Security, the new framework eliminates the long-standing “duration of Remember: status” system. Under the new regulation, most international students and exchange visitors will be allowed to remain in the United States only for the duration of their approved academic program, subject to a maximum stay of four years at a time. Foreign journalists traveling on I visas will also be subject to fixed periods of stay. India remains the largest source of international students in the United States. According to earlier figures shared by Jaiswal, approximately 330,000 Indian students were enrolled at U.S. educational institutions during the 2023-24 academic year. Beyond students, the United States currently hosts about 500,000 J-1 exchange visitors and roughly 37,000 foreign media professionals on I visas. The DHS published the final rule on July 16, paving the way for implementation in mid-September. For decades, F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors operated under the flexible “duration of status” framework, which allowed them to remain legally in the United States as long as they maintained enrollment, participated in their approved programs, and complied with visa requirements, without a fixed expiration date on their immigration status. This shows that they will trample upon people’s rights and happily go against public sentiment, simply to fulfil their divisive agenda,” Venugopal said. (ANI) FRIDAY, JULY 24, 2026 8 Killed, 12 Injured in Multiple Landslides in Nagaland’s Mon District MON, Nagaland, July 19: At least eight people were killed and 12 others injured after multiple landslides triggered by incessant heavy rainfall struck several locations in Nagaland’s Mon district on Sunday, officials said. Mon Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak told ANI over the phone that four bodies had been recovered, while four others remained buried under the debris. “Eight people have died in the landslide incidents triggered by incessant heavy rainfall that occurred in multiple locations in Mon district. The most affected areas are Mon town and Tizit. The heavy rainfall started at around 1 a.m., and we received information about the landslide incidents at around 6-7 a.m. SDRF, police, Assam Rifles, NDRF teams and local residents are engaged in search and rescue operations. So far, we have recovered four bodies, including three females and one male, from the debris. Twelve others were injured. Search and rescue operations are underway in multiple locations,” Konyak said. He added that several houses were damaged in the landslides. Meanwhile, BJP Nagaland State President Benjamin Yepthomi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy in Mon district and another landslide that severely affected the Tuli area of Mokokchung district, causing widespread hardship for local families. “I am deeply saddened by the tragic landslides which have claimed precious lives in Mon district and by the landslide that has severely affected the Tuli area under Mokokchung district, causing immense suffering to many families,” Yepthomi said in a statement. Extending his condolences, he said, “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families during this difficult time. I pray that the Almighty grants them strength, comfort, and courage to endure this irreparable loss. I also pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured and express my deepest solidarity with all those affected by the devastating disaster.” Yepthomi also praised the personnel involved in the relief efforts. “I sincerely commend and appreciate the tireless efforts of the rescue teams, district administration, security personnel, medical professionals, volunteers, and all those engaged in relief and rescue operations. According to police officials, these cases have been filed across multiple jurisdictions within the New Delhi district following various incidents and law-and-order concerns reported during the demonstrations. Providing a breakdown of the legal actions taken, officials stated that four FIRs were registered at the Parliament Street police station while three were lodged at the Connaught Place police station. Furthermore, one FIR each has been registered at the Mandir Marg, Barakhamba Road, and Kartavya Path police stations, respectively. The police noted that these FIRs pertain to different incidents and matters related to the maintenance of public order during the protest period. Investigations into all the registered cases are currently underway to determine further action. As per the officials, during Monday’s protest by CJP in the New Delhi area, the protesters displayed unruly, aggressive and violent behaviour. Despite repeated warnings and lawful directions issued by the police, they refused to disperse and deliberately violated the prohibitory orders in force. Earlier on Tuesday, the Delhi Police registered five FIRs so far in connection with alleged violence, stone-pelting and vandalism during Monday’s protest at Jantar Mantar and is probing whether the violence was part of a pre-planned conspiracy, with police examining more than 250 videos to identify those involved. The FIRs have been registered at the Parliament Street and Connaught Place police stations under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, the Arms Act, 1959, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act (PDPP Act). What are the rules by which the country functions? The Leader of the Opposition ought to be aware of this. Rahul ji is no ordinary leader; he is the Leader of the Opposition in the country. He is well aware that there are designated areas and spaces in Delhi specifically earmarked for protests.” ”Despite this, staging a sit-in protest with a large crowd right outside the gate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence--suddenly, without permission, and in disregard of the law--is inappropriate. (ANI) Maharashtra: Two e-bikes catch fire while charging in Pimpri-Chinchwad, one injured as blaze spreads to building Pune (Maharashtra) [India], July 20 (ANI): A fire broke out in the Walhekarwadi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad on Monday morning after two electric two-wheelers caught fire while being charged at Dagdoba Chowk. The blaze spread to a nearby two-storey residential building, leaving one person injured. According to fire officials, the incident took place when the electric two-wheelers parked for charging caught fire. The flames engulfed the two e-bikes and later spread to the adjacent residential building. Speaking to ANI, firefighter Shahaji Kopnkar said the fire control room received a call at 7:18 AM about a fire in a flat in the Walhekarwadi area. A fire team was immediately dispatched to the spot.” Upon arrival, we found that the building was a ground-plus-two-storey structure and people were trapped inside the flat. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the fire started while an electric bike was being charged on the ground floor,” Kopnkar said.”We rescued one person, and the fire is now fully under control. Two bikes were burnt, and one person sustained injuries. There was no other major damage. We are currently investigating the cause of the fire,” he added. In a separate incident earlier on Friday, a fire broke out at a warehouse storing paint materials in Vetal Nagar in Pune’s Kondhwa area, leaving one person seriously injured .Earlier on June 16, a massive fire broke out at four furniture shops in Maharashtra’s Handewadi area of Pune. No casualties were reported in the incident.Pune Fire Department officer Sameer Shaikh said the cause of the fire was being ascertained.” Although the cause of the fire was unclear, it spread rapidly due to the presence of highly flammable materials. Firefighting operations involved vehicles from five fire stations, four water tankers and several private water bowsers,” Shaikh said.He added that the fire affected four furniture-related establishments, in- cluding a showroom at the front and a factory at the rear. A written reply by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in the Rajya Sabha showed that the Centre paid a total of Rs. 58.37 lakh crore in interest and Rs. 22.80 lakh crore toward repayment of principal on dated government securities and external loans during the sixyear period. Together, total debt servicing amounted to Rs. 81.17 lakh crore. The data showed that interest payments increased steadily over the period. The government paid Rs. 6.80 lakh crore in interest in 2020-21, rising to Rs. 8.05 lakh crore in 2021-22, Rs. 9.29 lakh crore in 2022-23, Rs. 10.64 lakh crore in 2023-24, Rs. 11.16 lakh crore in 202425 and Rs. 12.43 lakh crore in 2025-26 on a provisional basis. Repayment of principal also increased during the period. The government repaid Rs. Remember: 2.62 lakh crore in 2020-21, followed by Rs. 3.00 lakh crore in 2021-22, Rs. 3.53 lakh crore in 2022-23, Rs. 4.88 lakh crore in 202324, Rs. 4.16 lakh crore in 2024-25 and Rs. 4.61 lakh crore in 2025-26 on a provisional basis. The government has budgeted Rs. 14.04 lakh crore for interest payments and Rs. 6.22 lakh crore for principal repayments during 2026-27, indicating that total debt servicing is expected to exceed Rs. 20 lakh crore in the current financial year. The reply also showed that the Union government’s total liabilities, as defined under the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) Act, stood at Rs. 201.17 lakh crore as of March 31, 2026, on a provisional basis. The government has projected the debt to rise to Rs. 218.63 lakh crore by the end of 2026-27, according to the Budget Estimate. The government’s external debt stood at Rs. 9.89 lakh crore as of March 31, 2026, and is projected to decline to Rs. 9.64 lakh crore by the end of the current financial year. The facility, which had been previously sealed by authorities following the expiry of its license, was reportedly being operated surreptitiously when the tragic incident occurred.DCP Mayur Patil on Tuesday said, "A fire broke out at an illegal firecracker factory in the Ramol area, resulting in the deaths of 10 people. We had previously shut down the factory because its license had expired on March 31, 2026, and the premises had been sealed. However, taking advantage of the police being occupied with security arrangements for the Rath Yatra, they attempted to reopen the illegal factory. This led to an accident and the loss of 10 lives."The senior official further stated that a crackdown on such illegal establishments has been intensified to prevent future tragedies." To prevent such incidents in the future, we have appealed to landowners to take action regarding any factories on their land that hold expired licenses. Landowners are now carrying out demolition actions against such operators. Arrangements have been put in place by the police and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation," DCP Patil added.The police and local administration are currently monitoring the demolition of unauthorised structures. Further investigation is underway. (ANI) “During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21, GSRTC played a crucial role in safely transporting migrant workers and labourers residing in Gujarat to their native places. GSRTC operated 22,953 trips across three states and transported a total of 699,357 passengers to their hometowns.” DyCM further stated that during this extensive relief operation, several GSRTC officers and employees contracted COVID-19 while performing their duties, and 115 employees lost their lives. The deceased included 39 drivers, 31 conductors, 29 administrative staff, and 16 mechanics, reflecting the invaluable contribution of COVID Warriors from across the Corporation in serving the public during the pandemic. DyCM added that, “Following a detailed verification by the committee constituted by the Corporation to identify employees who contracted COVID-19 while on duty, it has been decided to provide ex-gratia assistance of Rs 25 lakh to the legal heirs of each eligible employee. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel, the State Government has decided to extend this financial assistance to the families of the deceased GSRTC employees. This assistance is a tribute to the dedication, service, and sacrifice of the Corporation’s COVID Warriors.”Notably, the State Government had earlier issued a circular recognising government employees and officers who died while performing COVID-19 duty as COVID Warriors and extending financial assistance to their families. However, as GSRTC is a statutory corporation, there was uncertainty regarding the eligibility of its employees’ families for this benefit. The distribution ceremony will be held tomorrow at Narmada Hall, Swarnim Sankul-1, Gandhinagar.According to the Gujarat CMO, a total of Rs 28.75 crore in financial assistance will be disbursed, reflecting the state Government’s commitment to supporting the families of its employees and honouring the dedicated service of personnel who served the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. DyCM said that, London [UK], July 21 (ANI): Former Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman and founder Lalit Modi said on Tuesday that the Appellate Tribunal under SAFEMA has set aside the penalties imposed on him in the principal FEMA proceedings related to the 2009 IPL in South Africa, asserting that the core allegations against him have been rejected and describing the ruling as more than a personal vindication. In a statement posted on X, Modi said the Appellate Tribunal under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators Act (SAFEMA) delivered its judgment after more than 16 years of investigations, proceedings and litigation arising from the hosting of the 2009 Indian Premier League in South Africa. “The Tribunal has rejected the central premise on which the Enforcement Directorate’s case against me had been built. It held that the principal foreign remittances relating to the staging of IPL 2009 in South Africa were current account transactions, not capital account transactions, thereby overturning the foundation of the earlier findings,” Modi said. “The Tribunal also found that I was nei- ther responsible for BCCI’s statutory FEMA compliance nor vested with the financial authority alleged by the Enforcement Directorate, and it has set aside the penalties imposed on me in the principal proceedings. This marks the conclusion of what has been the single most significant legal matter arising from the 2009 South Africa IPL,” he added. Modi said that for more than 16 years he has consistently maintained that he acted in good faith, in the best interests of Indian cricket and the IPL, and committed no personal wrongdoing. He said the decision to move the tournament to South Africa in 2009 was taken under extraordinary circumstances, when India’s general elections made it impossible to host the competition at home. “The successful staging of that season ensured that the IPL survived and ultimately became one of the world’s most valuable sporting properties,” the statement said. Modi said he had cooperated with the legal process throughout the proceedings and remained confident that the facts and the law would ultimately prevail. “I wish to express my gratitude to my legal team, my family, my friends and the many people who continued to believe in me during what has been an extraordinarily long journey,” he said. Speaking to reporters at the site, Tamang said the state administration acted swiftly after the accident, mobilising multiple rescue agencies to carry out operations inside the under-construction tunnel.”The incident took place yesterday around 1.30 PM, coinciding with the lunch break for the workers on-site. There were approximately 27 people present; two managed to escape, leaving 25 trapped. Upon learning of the incident, the state administration - mobilising everyone from the police to the SDRF and NDRF - rushed to the scene. We have now successfully rescued all 25 individuals who were trapped. We are currently assessing the situation to ensure nothing else is amiss and to determine the next steps,” Tamang said. He added, “Following the inquiry, if any fault or negligence on the part of the company is found, appropriate action will be taken. Furthermore, the state government will pro- vide Rs 4 lakh as compensation for the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.” According to NHPC, the accident occurred on July 20 inside the under-construction Head Race Tunnel (HRT) at Samardung after a sudden burst of suspected methane gas trapped within rock formations triggered an explosion, filling the tunnel with dense fumes and toxic gases.
