According to the Home Ministry, the FCRA 2.0 portal has been developed to simplify compliance and strengthen monitoring and enforcement mechanisms under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act. All key processes related to applications, renewals, annual returns, and other services have now been fully digitised. Currently, there are approximately 14,500 active FCRA organisations across the country, receiving approximately 15,000 to 20,000 applications and around 17,000 annual returns. Hosted on the National Government Cloud (Meghraj), the portal includes features such as process restructuring, an integrated dashboard, Aadhaar-based authentication, e-sign facility, and OCR-based document analysis. For organisations, the portal reduces paperwork. For the government, API-based integration with key databases makes verification faster and more accurate, improves compliance monitoring, and ensures effective oversight of the receipt and use of foreign contributions. Meanwhile, under the e-OCI system, applicants can complete the entire OCI process online, submitting an application, uploading supporting documents, and downloading a digitally generated card upon approval, while existing cardholders can receive their e-OCI card digitally, in most cases without a new application or physical verification. Under the new system, the requirement for re-issuing an OCI booklet upon obtaining a new passport after the age of 20 has been eliminated; however, cardholders will be required to update their passport details online upon issuance of a new passport, the ministry said. Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Scheme was introduced in August 2005, and provides for registration as OCI of all Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) who were citizens of India on January 26, 1950 or thereafter or were eligible to become citizens of India on January 26, 1950 except who is or had been a citizen of Pakistan, Bangladesh or such other country notified by the Centre. The launch of the FCRA 2.0 portal comes days after the Home Ministry notified the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Rules, 2026, introducing a detailed framework classifying permissible activities under the religious category while also tightening compliance requirements for organisations receiving foreign funding in India. The amendment modifies the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Rules, 2011, and introduces a dedicated schedule outlining activities eligible for registration for religious purposes. The listed activities include construction, renovation and maintenance of places of worship such as temples, mosques, churches, gurudwaras, monasteries, synagogues and other religious sites. The schedule also permits preservation, printing, translation and digitisation of sacred scriptures and commentaries, support for institutions engaged in the study of religious philosophy and history, and provision of amenities for pilgrims, including drinking water, sanitation and shelter facilities at heritage religious sites. It further allows the establishment of dharamshalas, langars, annadans and community kitchens under religious initiatives.Other permitted activities include religious education, moral instruction, satsangs, discourses, meditation retreats, promotion of devotional music, chants, theatre and liturgical arts, as well as documentation and revival of indigenous and tribal faith practices. However, the rules clearly exclude any activity involving proselytisation. A key change is the introduction of the term “key functionary,” expanding accountability to include directors, partners, trustees, karta of Hindu Undivided Families, office-bearers and any person responsible for the management or control of an organisation. The rules further restrict eligibility by stating that organisations with foreign nationals (other than those of Indian origin) as key functionaries will generally not qualify for registration, unless specifically permitted. In another significant change, NGOs will be required to utilise at least 75 per cent of previously received foreign funds before being eligible for subsequent instalments. Additional provisions define “reasonable activity” thresholds linked to fund utilisation over a specified period. (ANI)

INDIA THIS WEEK What Makes America Great? FRIDAY, JULY 10, 2026 Celebrating 250 Years of American Independence As the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of its independence, Americans are pausing to reflect on the enduring principles that have shaped the nation over the past two and a half centuries. While the United States is recognized around the world for its economic strength, military power, technological innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit, many believe that America’s true greatness is rooted in the timeless values upon which it was founded—freedom, faith, opportunity, justice, and the enduring belief that every individual has the potential to build a better future. To mark this historic milestone, India This Week invited a number of distinguished community leaders, activists, and successful business entrepreneurs from our community to share their thoughts on what makes America truly great. Their reflections, presented below, offer diverse perspectives on the ideals and opportunities that continue to inspire generations of Americans. Elisha B. Pulivarti, Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. India SME Council, Inc. and former Senior Adviser to the Governor of Maryland, believes America's greatness extends far beyond its material achievements. "What makes America great is not simply its wealth, military strength, or technological innovation, but the enduring ideals that have inspired generations." Drawing from Biblical teachings, Pulivarti notes that greatness is measured not by power, but by character and service. He points to the words of Jesus Christ, who taught, "Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant." According to him, humility, justice, compassion, and faithfulness remain the true foundations of national greatness. He also emphasizes America's deep Christian heritage and believes that returning to these moral and spiritual foundations is essential to addressing many of the nation's contemporary social, cultural, and moral challenges. Quoting Psalm 33:12, he reminds Americans: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord." The national motto, "In God We Trust," continues to reflect the faith that has inspired generations of Americans. For Dr. Rajan Natarajan, former Deputy Secretary of State and a successful business entrepreneur, America's greatness is reflected in the opportunities it offers to people from every corner of the world. Greeting fellow Americans from the nation's capital during the historic celebration, he says: "Happy Independence Day! Greetings from Washington, D.C. As we celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the United States, I am deeply grateful to be in our nation's capital for this historic milestone." Having person- Elisha B. Keerthi Swamy, Chairman of Beltsville Industries Group. ally experienced the opportunities available in America, Dr. Natarajan expresses heartfelt appreciation for a nation that has transformed countless lives. "This extraordinary nation has provided abundant opportunities to millions—including me. America's enduring values of freedom, democracy, innovation, and opportunity continue to inspire dreams, empower entrepreneurs, and transform lives. Happy July 4th, and Happy America 250!" Keerthi Swamy, Chairman of Beltsville Industries Group, summarizes America's enduring appeal in a few powerful words: "America is great because it celebrates freedom, welcomes ambition, encourages innovation, and offers every citizen a chance to succeed." Her statement reflects the nation's long-standing commitment to rewarding hard work, encouraging enterprise, and allowing individuals to pursue their aspirations regardless of their background. Offering a broader reflection, Dr./Pastor Michael Pedron, Pastor, Evangelist, Author, and Poet at Remnant SDA Church in Maryland, believes America's greatness lies in its continual pursuit of improvement rather than perfection."America is great not because it is perfect, but because it has always believed it can become better." According to Pastor Pedron, the nation's greatest strength is not its wealth but its freedom. America has become a place where people of every race, language, and culture can dream together while enjoying protections guaranteed by the Constitution. The rule of law, rather than the rule of any one individual, has remained one of the country's strongest pillars. He observes that America's tradition of protecting freedom of thought has fostered innovation and scientific advancement while welcoming generations of immigrants who arrived with little more than faith, hope, and determination. Among Ameri- Odisha: 24-year-old abducted, beaten to death in Nayagarh; 8 arrested following ‘kangaroo court’ allegations Nayagada [Odisha], July 8 (ANI): A 24-year-old man was allegedly abducted and beaten to death in an incident linked to a suspected Mov in Nayagada district, with an investigation launched by the police and several people for questioning. The victim, Abhimanyu Sahu of Dalimbamada village under Nayagarh Sadar police station, was allegedly kidnapped on Sunday evening while visiting a grocery shop. According to his family, he was taken to a village club, assaulted with heavy wrenches and later dumped into the Dahuka River in an attempt to destroy evidence. Police recovered the body from the river on Monday and seized a bloodstained wrench believed to have been used in the attack. A scientific team collected forensic evidence, while sniffer dogs were deployed, but failed to trace the suspects. The victim’s family alleged that they had been socially ostracised by the village for nearly four years over a land dispute and claimed Abhimanyu was targeted after a village meeting, described as a kangaroo court, was held a day before the killing. A team was formed under the supervision of the Nayagarh SP. Police have arrested 8 youths from the village. The court trial will be held today. The other accused will be arrested soon/Speaking with ANI, Subhendu Patra, Superintendent of Police, Nayagarh, said that the incident occurred inside a local community hall, after which the perpetrators allegedly disposed of the victim’s body in a nearby river. The SP noted that although the information regarding the crime reached authorities with a delay, local officers moved swiftly once the details were pieced together. He said that the police dispatched a specialised scientific team to the crime scene to secure physical evidence, adding that the authorities are engaged in the process of verifying the specific roles of the eight individuals currently in custody before officially forwarding the case for prosecution.”Yesterday, in the evening hours of 5th July, we got information that a few villagers of Dalimbamuda assaulted a local youth called Abhimanyu Sahu; they did it in a local community hall and then they disposed of the body in the nearby river. So, but somehow this information was transmitted at a very delayed manner and but whatever information the local inspector could piece in, after that they immediately took action of the case, they en- sured that this few accused individuals who are directly involved in the case they’re apprehended and also sent the scientific team to the spot and collect whatever necessary evidence that was available on the ground,” he said.” So far we have in this case found eight accused, we have detained them as well and after verifying their role we’re going to forward them and we’re also trying to ensure that these kind of incident where whenever there is a violent incident that sufficient precautionary measures are taken by the local officers to increase preventive mechanisms in the ground and we’ve anticipating that there is involvement of more accused persons as well and we’re going to arrest them soon,” he added.Further details are awaited as the investigation is underway. (ANI) ca's greatest contributions to humanity, Pastor Pedron highlights the principle that liberty belongs to every human being. He believes religious liberty stands among the nation's brightest achievements, allowing every individual to worship God according to the dictates of conscience—or not worship at all—without government coercion. He further emphasizes that America's diversity is not a weakness but proof that unity is possible without uniformity. True patriotism, he says, is measured by justice, mercy, humility, and service to others rather than by displays of power alone. Pastor Pedron also reminds Americans that freedom must be protected by every generation. The nation's future, he believes, will depend more upon moral courage than military or economic strength. America remains truly great when it defends liberty, upholds justice, protects the dignity of every individual, and remains faithful to the ideals that inspired its founding. As the United States celebrates 250 years of independence, these reflections converge on a common theme. America's greatness is ultimately found not merely in its prosperity or global influence, but in its unwavering commitment to freedom, democracy, faith, opportunity, innovation, justice, and human dignity. These principles have inspired generations of Americans and continue to offer hope to millions around the world. On this historic milestone, Americans are reminded that the nation's future will be shaped not only by economic progress or technological achievement, but by the character of its people and their continued dedication to the timeless ideals upon which the United States was founded. Happy 250th Anniversary of American Independence. God Bless America.
