In a 6-3 ruling, the nation’s highest court reaffirmed that the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees citizenship to virtually all children born on US soil, regardless of the immigration status of their parents. The judgment represents one of the most significant legal setbacks for President Trump since returning to office and effectively blocks one of the cornerstone immigration measures of his second-term agenda. Writing for the majority, John Roberts emphasised that birthright citizenship has long been a fundamental constitutional guarantee. “Citizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights—to freely participate in our political community,” Roberts wrote. “The Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to ‘every free-born person in this land.’ We keep that promise today.” The Court relied heavily on its landmark 1898 decision in United States v. Wong Kim Ark, which established that children born in the United States to foreign parents are American citizens by birth under the Fourteenth Amendment. The ruling has served as the constitutional foundation for birthright citizenship for more than a century. Washington DC [US], June 27 (ANI): US President Donald Trump on Friday (local time) thanked India for honour bestowed upon him with the naming of Donald Trump Avenue in Hyderabad. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “The new Donald Trump Avenue in Hyderabad, India — The first U.S. President to ever be honored in this way. Thank you!” US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Tuesday jointly unveiled a ceremonial plaque commemorating the renaming of the road adjoining the US Consulate in Hyderabad as “Donald Trump Avenue” during a gala reception marking the 250th anniversary of American Independence. The “Freedom 250” event, held to commemorate the milestone anniversary of the United States, brought together senior diplomats, government officials, and leaders from the business, aerospace, defence and technology sectors. Trump Administration’s Argument Rejected During the case, attorneys representing the Trump administration argued that the Fourteenth Amendment was never intended to grant citizenship automatically to children born to parents who are in the United States illegally or only temporarily. They contended that the amendment requires an individual to be domiciled in the United States—or to have the intention of remaining permanently—before birthright citizenship can apply. The Supreme Court rejected that interpretation, concluding that both the Constitution and longstanding legal precedent protect the citizenship rights of children born within the United States. The decision means that children born in the United States to undocumented immigrants, temporary workers, foreign students, tourists and other non-permanent residents will continue to receive au- tomatic US citizenship at birth. Conservative Justices Dissent The Court’s conservative wing was divided over the case. Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel A. Alito Jr. and Neil M. Gorsuch dissented from the majority opinion. Meanwhile, Brett M. Kavanaugh sided with the majority in striking down Trump’s executive order, although he clarified that his opinion rested primarily on federal statutory law rather than a direct constitutional interpretation. Major Setback for Trump’s Immigration Agenda The ruling marks a significant political and legal defeat for President Trump, who campaigned heavily on tightening immigration laws during both his presidential campaigns. Ending what Trump has repeatedly described as “birth tourism” and restricting automatic citizenship for children born to non-citizens were among the signature promises of his second administration. The executive order was intended to discourage individuals from travelling to the United States solely to give birth so that their children could obtain American citizenship. Earlier this year, Trump had warned that a court decision against his administration on birthright citizenship, coupled with earlier setbacks over tariff policies, would not be “economically sustainable” for the United States. BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP SEE PAGE 12 Trump thanks India for naming road adjoining US Consulate in Hyderabad as “Donald Trump Avenue” Remember: “Teach your children to gain wisdom and cultivate humility, and they will soar to great heights and excel in life.” Anon According to a statement issued on the occasion, the special designation by the Government of Telangana honours the United States and reflects Hyderabad‘s growing role in strengthening US-India engagement. Ambassador Gor and Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka presided over the event, which also highlighted the expanding strategic and economic partnership between India and the United States. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and US Consul General in Hyderabad Laura Williams also participated in the celebrations. Speaking at the event, Ambassador Gor praised Hyderabad‘s growing importance in the bilateral relationship and underscored the region’s contribution to strategic cooperation.” Nowhere is the high-speed trajectory of our partnership more evident than in Hyderabad. From HITEC City to aerospace and defence, this region represents progress that is defining our bilateral momentum,” Gor said. Referring to economic cooperation between the two countries, he added, “With our interim trade agree- ment and Mission India on track to bring over USD 20 billion of new investment to the United States, we are proving that America First does not mean America alone.” (ANI)

Sharing the design on Truth Social on Friday, Trump wrote, “The U.S.A.’s New Passport, which says, ‘Welcome, but be good!’” The commemorative passport features an image of Trump seated behind the Resolute Desk, superimposed over the text of the Declaration of Independence, with his signature displayed at the bottom of the page. The facing page includes John Trumbull’s famous painting, The Declaration of Independence. The newly released design appears to use an image of Trump inspired by his portrait at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington. The design differs from earlier mockups released by the U.S. Department of State this year, By Reena Bhardwaj which depicted the president using a different illustration. Later on Friday, the White House shared the same passport design on X with the caption, “New U.S. Passport to Commemorate America’s 250th.” The commemorative passport was first announced in April as part of nationwide celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. At the time, officials described it as “a limited-edition U.S. passport to commemorate the historic occasion of America’s 250th anniversary,” featuring “custom artwork and enhanced images on the front, back, and inside covers.” During the initial rollout, a U.S. official told CNN that the commemorative edition “will be the default passport out of the Washington Passport Agency when available” for individuals renewing their passports in person at that location. The official added that online applications and other passport agencies would continue issuing the current passport design. The standard U.S. passport features Percy Moran’s artwork of Francis Scott Key on the inside front cover, depicting the dawn following the bombardment of Fort McHenry, the battle that inspired Key to write the poem that later became the U.S. national anthem. Passages from the anthem are also printed on the inside front cover. (ANI) Washington DC [US], June 28 (ANI): The Indian Embassy’s mango tasting event ‘Taste the Tropical Magic’ in Washington DC drew over eight thousand people. Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, said that they were expecting a footfall of 8,000, but the actual footfall is much higher. Kwatra, in a conversation with ANI, said that mango has now firmly and squarely embedded in the custom to the American taste buds.“Look, it’s not really a mango diplomacy. It’s essentially a very tiny fraction of the taste of India, which we have tried to showcase here. We were expecting about 8000 people at RSVP. Our understanding is that number has far exceeded. It also tells us that mango has now firmly and squarely embedded in the custom to the American taste buds. But besides mango, we also have basmati rice promotion and Indian tea. Should try and get you samples of that Indian tea, Indian coffee. For the first time, I ever never knew there is olive tea in India. We had olive tea. All these things are being showcased on a day that is wonderful. It was expected to rain. Even rain god favoured us and it has stayed quite dry for the night. People are enjoying. Ultimately, that’s what it’s about,” he said. He further said, “If people enjoy, they enjoy a taste of India of Indian rice, Indian mango, Indian tea and coffee. Well, that speaks for itself.” Kwatra said that the huge footfall shows that such events must be held more frequently.”So this is clearly a message to us that it perhaps needs to be done more frequently than annually. And we also probably need to broaden our basket of things to showcase. So I wouldn’t be surprised if you start now seeing food promotion events that are more than once per year, twice per year,” he said. Indian Embassy in the US on Saturday (local time) held ‘Taste the Tropical Magic’ — a celebration of India’s renowned mango varieties, with free tastings for all. (ANI)

INDIA THIS WEEK FRIDAY, JULY 3, 2026 Pune Fiancée Murder Case: Woman, Friend Accused of Plotting Businessman’s Killing at Lohagad Fort; Fast-Track Trial Ordered Pune, June 28 (ANI): A shocking murder case that was initially believed to be a trekking accident has taken a dramatic turn after police alleged that a 26-year-old Pune businessman was deliberately pushed to his death from Lohagad Fort by his fiancée and her close friend in a premeditated conspiracy. The victim, Ketan Vishal Agarwal, died on June 18 after falling from the historic Lohagad Fort near Lonavala. His fiancée, Siya Goyal, initially informed police that Ketan had accidentally slipped while trekking. However, investigators from the Lonavala Rural Police grew suspicious after family members and friends questioned the circumstances surrounding the death, pointing out that Ketan was an experienced trekker and unlikely to have fallen accidentally. According to Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill, the investigation, supported by witness statements, technical evidence and confidential sources, revealed that Siya Goyal had allegedly conspired with her friend Chetan Chaudhary to murder Ketan. Police alleged that Chetan travelled separately to Lohagad Fort on a motorcycle on the day of the incident. Investigators claim the two accused assaulted Ketan with an object before pushing him off the fort, causing his death. Both accused were arrested on June 23 and, according to police, confessed to the crime during interrogation. A murder case has been registered against them, and further investigation is underway. A Pune Magistrate Court has remanded Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary to police custody until June 29. Although the defence opposed the police custody, the court granted investigators seven days to continue the probe. Investigators have since uncovered what they believe was a carefully planned conspiracy. Police suspect the murder plot originated during an earlier visit to Lohagad Fort on May 31, when Siya allegedly identified a location from where Ketan could be pushed. Officials further allege that an initial attempt to kill him was made on June 14 but failed after Siya raised an alarm about spotting a snake and later claimed Ketan had slipped during the commotion. Police also claim the accused met at a café before the murder to discuss the plan and identify suitable locations on the fort. Investigators say Siya and Chetan, who reportedly became close after meeting at a Diwali party last year, remained in constant contact and allegedly exchanged more than 2,000 phone calls over several months. According to investigators, Siya allegedly did not wish to proceed with her arranged marriage to Ketan and was under family pressure to marry. Police believe she wanted to continue her relationship with Chetan while eliminating Ketan. As the investigation progresses, police have seized Chetan Chaudhary’s motorcycle, which was allegedly used to travel from Pune to Lohagad Fort on the day of the crime. Authorities have also recovered the hoodie and headphones he was reportedly wearing during the incident. The seized items have been sent for forensic examination. On Sunday, Siya Goyal’s parents, Pravin Goyal and Pooja Goyal, appeared before Lonavala Police for questioning as investigators continued gathering evidence. The victim’s family has expressed profound grief and disbelief over the alleged crime. Ketan’s father said that if Siya did not wish to marry his son, she could simply have refused the proposal and the wedding would have been cancelled. “If she didn’t want to get married, she could have simply said no. We would have cancelled the wedding immediately. Instead, they chose such a cruel path. Society needs to reflect on such a mindset,” he said while demanding a fast-track trial and the strictest possible punishment for the accused. Ketan’s mother accused Siya of betraying the family’s trust, saying they had welcomed her into their home and never suspected she could be involved in such a crime. She also demanded the harshest punishment under the law. The Maharashtra Government has approved the establishment of a fast- track court to hear the case and has appointed senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Ujjwal Nikam as the Special Public Prosecutor. The decision followed a meeting between Ketan’s father and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who assured the family that the case would be expedited and that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible. The case has generated widespread public outrage across the country. Actor Hina Khan also reacted to the incident on social media, expressing shock over the alleged murder. “In today’s world, speaking the truth has become so difficult that people are ready to take someone’s life instead,” she wrote, questioning why the victim’s life had to be taken instead of simply ending the relationship honestly. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue collecting forensic and electronic evidence to strengthen the prosecution’s case. Family, locals join candlelight march in Pimpri-Chinchwad; demand death penalty for the accused Ketan Agarwal‘s family members and society residents in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Saturday held a candlelight march to pay tribute to him, whose alleged murder is currently under investigation, and demanded justice for him.The case, which is being probed as a murder, is currently under investigation. Ketan Agarwal‘s parents, Rakhi Agarwal and Vishal Agarwal, also participated in the march, with several people carrying placards demanding strict action against the accused. Speaking to ANI, a family member questioned why Ketan’s fiancee, Siya Goyal, had not objected to the marriage proposal earlier if she was unwilling to marry him.”When the other party, Siya Goyal’s entire family, came regarding the wedding, they were told everything about Ketan; nothing was hidden from them. If she had any issues, why didn’t she say so? She spent so much time with him–going out, dining together, doing everything– so why didn’t she raise any objections then? Our only question is: if she didn’t like our son, why didn’t she just say ‘no’ on the very first day? We simply want justice for our child and our family; that is all we expect from the government,” the family member said. Meanwhile, Ketan’s father, Vishal Agarwal, appealed for justice and demanded the death penalty for those found guilty.”I have just one appeal. My 26-year-old son was killed for no apparent reason–a reason that remains unknown to this day. My child was not at fault in any way. I had set out to arrange his marriage and bring a daughter-in-law into the family; I never imagined I would lose my child instead. I appeal to everyone to ensure he gets justice and that his killers get the death sentence,” he told reporters. Expressing confidence in the investigation, he added, “I have full faith in the law and order system. I am completely satisfied with their efforts. I am grateful to everyone supporting me, and I hope you will continue to stand by me until the accused are punished.” Ketan’s mother, Rakhi Agarwal, also demanded capital punishment for the accused.”I want jus- tice for Ketan, and I want the death penalty for Siya. I am a mother, and Siya has a mother too; yet, I want the death penalty for Siya and for Chetan,” she told reporters. Ketan Agrawal was reportedly to have died after falling from Lohagad Fort near Pune on June 18, after which a case was registered. Lonavala Rural Police, investigating the alleged murder of Ketan Agrawal, suspect that the prime accused, Siya Goyal, was unwilling to get married at this stage of her life and was allegedly under family pressure to marry the victim. Pune Police examine electric car used by Ketan Agarwal during fatal Lohagrah trip A red electric car which was used by Ketan Agarwal on the day he was murdered during a trip to Lohargarh fort is now being examined by the Pune Police as it builds its case. A video of Ketan Agarwal’s electric car had surfaced on social media showing him and his fiancee Siya Goyal driving in the car with its sunroof open. The footage was recorded by Ketan Agarwal himself during a long drive after purchasing the vehicle. Ketan Agarwal had travelled to Lohagad Fort on June 18 in the same car along with his fiancee Siya Goyal. The case, which is being probed as a murder, is currently under investigation. Ketan Agarwal’s fiancee Siya Goyal and her friend Chetan Chaudhary have been arrested and are in police custody as the probe continues. On Friday, the Maharashtra government approved the setting up of a fast-track court and appointed senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Ujjwal Nikam as the Special Public Prosecutor in the case. The decision was taken after the victim’s father met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Pune and urged swift justice in the case. The Chief Minister assured the family that strict action would be taken against the accused and that the case would be fast-tracked. During the meeting, the victim’s father, Vishal Agarwal, demanded the death penalty for the accused and said he had been informed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) had already been formed in the case.”I have urged the CM that the accused should at least get the death penalty.

INDIA THIS WEEK FRIDAY, JULY 3, 2026 Indian Army Rescues 79-Year-Old Earthquake Survivor in Venezuela as Operation Amistad Expands Relief Efforts Caracas/New Delhi, July 1 (ANI): India continued its humanitarian mission in earthquake-ravaged Venezuela on Wednesday, with the Indian Army rescuing a 79-year-old woman from the rubble of a collapsed building and providing life-saving medical treatment under Operation Amistad, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar lauded the dedication of Indian medical teams serving in the disaster zone. The elderly survivor, trapped beneath debris after the devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, suffered a fractured leg and peripheral arterial disease. According to the Indian Army, delays in receiving medical care had resulted in a severe arterial ulcer and intense pain. The Army’s Field Hospital team stabilised her fracture, initiated advanced wound care and began daily follow-up treatment. In a post on X, the Indian Army said, “Operation Amistad: A Lifeline Amidst the Rubble. The Indian Army Field Hospital continues to serve as a beacon of hope, delivering compassionate medical care to those affected.” It added that the specialised treatment not only addressed her critical injuries but also offered renewed hope for recovery. The rescue is one of several humanitarian operations being car- ried out by India’s Army Field Hospital, which has become fully operational in Caracas and is treating earthquake victims around the clock. The measures are aimed at controlling vehicular emissions, dust pollution and the open burning of waste. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the new framework consolidates various existing orders into a single, clear and stringent system, making compliance easier for all concerned departments, institutions and citizens while ensuring more effective enforcement. The Chief Minister said Delhi‘s air quality deteriorates signif- icantly every winter. Data from the past several years shows that pollution levels consistently rise between November and February. Keeping this challenge in view, the Delhi Government has now put in place a permanent mechanism so that there will no longer be any need to issue separate orders every year and all agencies can take timely action under a predefined set of rules. She said the notification is based on a detailed study of experience and air quality data.
