7 Elwood High School’s Luyet focuses on life skills Lily Jones The Herald Bulletin ELWOOD — Megan Luyet didn’t think she would become a teach- er. Originally, Luyet wanted to go to culinary school. But after realizing there were none close by, she went to study at Ball State University. “I ended up getting a job at Ball State in the dining department,” Luyet said. “Then they started doing construction where I worked, then they decided to close the building, so my job got eliminated. By pure luck, my mom sent me a listing for this job while they were eliminating my job. “My dad was a history teacher (at the high school) and was the athletic director, and my mom was a secretary at the intermediate school. It’s almost like I was meant to be a teacher.” Luyet, who teaches child development, interpersonal relationships and cooking classes at Elwood Jr./Sr. High School, believes making connections with students is key to their learning. “I really believe that if you connect with them, they will buy into what you are trying to sell them,” Luyet said. “We’re trying to influence and shape these kids into better little humans, and I think the connection is the biggest part.” Elwood student Emily Faucett, who nominated her for Golden Apple recognition, called Luyet “a meant she would have to buy build on their skills, that’s what hard-working, amazing teacher more ingredients/products for I try to do,” Luyet said. “We start who also doubles as a best friend! her classes. out with very simple cooking, “She works hard for her students “Mrs. Luyet took it upon herself and by the end of the year, they’re to fund raise so that she could and gives them the best oppormaking full-blown meals for tunities for their future,” Faucett continue doing all of the labs that themselves. Ethan Evans, the principal at Elwood Jr./Sr. High School, said Luyet is an important asset to the school. “Mrs. Luyet is a team player,” Evans said. “Due to some scheduling changes going into this school year, her class sizes are larger Megan Luyet helps sophomore Averi Kelly with a class project Friday than in past years, which morning at Elwood Jr./Sr. High School.
