Both sides reviewed ongoing initiatives, identified priority areas for co-development and co-production of defense equipment, and Remember: reaffirmed commitment to enhancing military-to-military cooperation through joint exercises, training visits, and strategic exchanges,” the Ministry of Defence said. The Indian side urged U.S. officials to ensure timely delivery of the precision-guided shells to the Indian Army. India is also looking to finalize a deal to procure Javelin anti-tank guided missiles from the United States through the emergency route. Abraham Lincoln Rupee hits record low to 95; Sensex down over 1600 points New Delhi [India], March 30–31 (ANI): Indian equity markets witnessed a sharp sell-off on Monday, with the BSE Sensex plunging 1,635.67 points, or 2.22 per cent, to close at 71,947.55. The NSE Nifty 50 also declined significantly, falling 488.20 points, or 2.14 per cent, to settle at 22,331.40. The downturn coincided with the Indian rupee weakening to near the 95 mark against the US dollar, hitting a record low and reflecting heightened risk-off sentiment across domestic markets. Market participants attributed the decline to intensifying geopolitical tensions and rising energy prices. Siddhartha Khem- ka, Head of Research, Wealth Management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, described the session as “another day of carnage” on D-Street, noting that uncertainty continues to loom over investor sentiment. He highlighted that escalating tensions in West Asia, driven by the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran, have entered their fifth week and expanded across the region, weighing heavily on markets. Khemka further pointed out that macroeconomic pressures compounded the situation, with Brent crude prices surging toward USD 108 per barrel. He added that the rupee’s depreciation past the 95 mark—despite intervention by the Reserve Bank of India—and its over 4 per cent fall in March have been key contributors to the negative sentiment. Meanwhile, India’s 10-year bond yield crossed 7 per cent, its highest level in over 21 months, adding to investor concerns. I feel confident in my future, and Modi Bats for Unity Amid West Asia Crisis, Slams Congress; Unveils Rs. 20,000 Crore Gujarat Development Push Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India has kept the situation “under control” despite global disruptions triggered by the ongoing West Asia conflict, attributing this stability to the country’s effective foreign policy and the “unwavering unity” of its citizens. Addressing a public gathering at Vav-Tharad in Gujarat after inaugurating multiple development projects, the Prime Minister noted that the conflict has driven up global energy concerns, including diesel, petrol, and gas prices, but asserted that India has managed the impact effectively. At the same event, Modi accused the Congress party of engaging in “divisive activities” by spreading fear and inciting the public at a time when unity is crucial. He alleged that the opposition was hoping for the West Asia crisis to escalate in order to gain political advantage. Following his address, the Prime Minister held a roadshow in Vav-Tharad, drawing large public support. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, speaking at a rally in Kozhikode, warned that the escalating conflict could trigger a “financial earthquake” in India, with rising fuel prices and inflation. He questioned both the Centre and the Kerala government over their preparedness to handle the potential economic fallout, criticizing the government’s ability to shield citizens from the crisis. The West Asia situation intensified after a joint US-Israel strike on Iranian territory on February 28 reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior figures, prompting retaliation from Tehran. Reports indicate that the United States is preparing for the possibility of extended ground operations in Iran, while also increasing troop deployment in the region, even as diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes. Highlighting domestic development, Modi reiterated that the BJP-led government would continue its “Superfast Express of development,” backed by public trust from grassroots to Parliament. He praised Gujarat’s Rs. 4.08 lakh crore budget and said it would drive growth across villages, towns, and cities. The Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation for projects worth over Rs.20,000 crore across sectors such as power, railways, road transport, health, urban development, and rural and tribal welfare. Among the key projects, he inaugurated the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway built at a cost of over Rs. 5,100 crore and launched several road infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving connectivity and easing congestion. Modi also highlighted Gujarat’s leadership in solar energy, noting that the state’s early investments in renewable energy have placed it at the forefront of India’s green transition. He further inaugurated multiple urban development and healthcare projects, including large-scale facilities in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

Rupee hits record low; Sensex down over 1600 points Rupee from page 1 Securities, said the market structure remained fragile throughout the session. He explained that the Nifty opened with a gap down on the final trading day of FY26 and attempted an early recovery, but the rebound lacked follow-through. The index broke key intraday support levels of 22,470– 22,450, marking the eighth session in the March series where it closed with losses exceeding 1 per cent. The banking sector bore the brunt of the sell-off, with the Bank Nifty underperforming broader indices and dropping nearly 3.82 per cent to close at 50,275. Shah noted that the index extended its downtrend and fell below its previous swing low of 51,324. This decline fol- lowed the Reserve Bank of India’s move to tighten position limits on onshore rupee forex exposures, triggering volatility among financial stocks. Market breadth also remained weak, with 442 stocks in the Nifty 500 ending in the red, while foreign institutional investors continued to remain net sellers, offloading Rs 4,367 crore in the previous session. Meanwhile, a report by the State Bank of India suggested that the recent depreciation of the rupee is broadly in line with movements in other global currencies and does not indicate excessive weakness. According to the report, the rupee’s decline since February 27—marking the start of the current West Asia conflict—reflects global uncertainty rather than domestic insta- The Poetic Pen INDIA THIS WEEK- April 3, 2026 Be in Time Hymn: Publick Domain Life at best is very brief, Like the falling of a leaf, Like the binding of a sheaf, Be in time. It noted that currencies which had appreciated earlier have corrected more sharply, and the rupee has performed relatively better in comparison. The report emphasised that India’s external position remains strong, with foreign exchange reserves exceeding USD 700 billion—sufficient to cover more than 10 months of imports—while short-term debt remains below 20 per cent of reserves. This robust buffer, it said, provides adequate protection against speculative pressures and enables effective market intervention by the Reserve Bank of India. To manage volatility, the report recommended several policy measures, including providing oil marketing companies with a special window to handle their daily dollar demand of USD 250–300 million separately from the broader market. It also suggested that the RBI could consider conducting “Operation Twist” to better manage yield dynamics by raising short-term yields while moderating longterm rates. Additionally, the report noted that recent RBI steps to rationalise banks’ open positions may have contributed to divergences between onshore and offshore currency markets. It stressed the importance of careful liquidity management to support the rupee amid ongoing global uncertainties. Overall, while financial markets remain under pressure due to geopolitical tensions and rising commodity prices, the SBI report underscored that India’s strong macroeconomic fundamentals and substantial forex reserves provide a significant cushion against sustained volatility. The legislation seeks to impose salary deductions on both public and private sector employees who are found neglecting or failing to provide support to their parents. The bill proposes that dependent parents can claim up to 15 per cent of their employed child’s gross monthly salary, capped at Rs 10,000, to meet essential needs such as food, shelter, clothing, and medical care. The legislation will cover all state government employees as well as individuals working in private and public organisations within Telangana. In cases of neglect, senior citizens will be able to approach desig- nated authorities, such as the District Collector, to seek a share of their child’s salary. To ensure proper implementation, the bill also provides for the creation of a dedicated Senior Citizens Commission. Headed by a retired High Court judge, the commission will handle appeals and exercise quasi-judicial powers, including conducting inquiries and imposing penalties. A state-level monitoring body will also be set up to oversee the execution of the Act and promote awareness about family responsibility and moral accountability. The existing Central Act, “The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007,” empowers Tribunals to order neglecting children to provide monthly maintenance of up to Rs 10,000 to meet their old-age parents’ basic needs and also for the cancellation of Gift Deed registration. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also criticised the proposed law, calling it “rigged” and questioning the Centre over funds received through the PM CARES Fund, electoral bonds, and NGOs. He raised concerns over transparency and alleged selective regulation of foreign funding, accusing the government of attempting to control non-governmental organisations. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed apprehension that the amendment could impact social service organisations and reduce support for the poor and marginalised. UP: People queue for fuel with canisters in Lakhimpur Kheri even as Govt appealed against panic buying Lakhimpur Kheri (Uttar Pradesh) [India], March 27 (ANI): People were seen queued up in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri on Friday with canisters to buy fuel even after the Central government has appealed to citizens to avoid panic buying of petrol, diesel, and LPG. The panic among the general public is a result of a global energy crisis due to the US-Israel war on Iran and the consequent Tehran-imposed blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s crude oil and gas supply, between 20 and 25 million barrels per day, is shipped. Earlier today, the government slashed the excise duties for petrol and diesel, bringing them down to Rs 3 per litre of petrol and zero for a litre of diesel. Windfall tax on export of diesel has been set at 21.5 rupees/litre. This move brings relief to oil marketing companies who were losing money on the marketing side because the cost of crude oil was shooting up. Retail prices of Petrol and Diesel remain unchanged as of now.Earlier, the Government of India said that fuel supply across the country remains stable and retail fuel outlets are operating normally despite the ongoing developments in West Asia, urging the public not to believe rumours or resort to panic buying. ficial sources and to avoid spreading rumours or unverified information,” the statement added. The fatal nature of the interception became clear on Thursday after falling debris struck a busy thoroughfare, resulting in the deaths of the two individuals and leaving three others injured. These casualties occurred specifically on Sweihan Street following the activation of air defence protocols to neutralise the incoming threat. While the primary missile was successfully neutralised by the defence systems, the subsequent rain of fragments over a populated area caused significant distress and damage. Emergency services were deployed to the scene immediately to assist the victims and manage the wreckage caused to several vehicles. This event underscores the inherent risks posed by falling shrapnel during high-altitude interceptions, even “Religious polarisation creating hatred, shifting focus away”: Assam’s Raijor Dal leader Gyanashree Bora when defence systems perform as intended. She stated, “Our leader is Akhil Gogoi, not Rahul Gandhi.” On social concerns, Bora expressed deep concern over the growing religious polarisation, which she believes is fostering hatred within society and shifting the focus away from development. “Religious polarisation is creating hatred in society and shifting focus away from development,” she told ANI. Bora also addressed the issue of infiltration in Assam, asserting that there are infiltrators in the state who need to be identified and expelled.
