Basic portrait (introduction exercises)]

This drawing was completed in 20 minutes, focusing on careful observation of facial proportions such as the eyes, nose, mouth, and overall structure of the face. I attempted to represent volume through shading and to capture the general likeness of the subject. Attention was given to details such as eyebrows, hair, and clothing.

This drawing was completed in 15 minutes, where I began simplifying the facial features into more basic shapes. I reduced unnecessary details and focused on the main structural elements of the face. The goal was to maintain proportions while using fewer lines and less shading.

This drawing was completed in 5 minutes and focuses on synthesizing the face into its most essential forms. The features are represented using simple geometric shapes and minimal lines. This exercise helped me understand how complex forms can be reduced to basic structures.

This drawing was completed in 1 minute and represents an extreme level of simplification. The facial features are reduced to basic geometric shapes and minimal lines. The focus is no longer on detail but on capturing the essential structure of the face as quickly as possible.

What did you find most complicated and why? The most complicated aspect was maintaining correct proportions of the face, especially as the time decreased. In shorter exercises, I found it difficult to balance speed and accuracy, which caused distortions in facial features. Controlling line quality was also challenging, as I tended to repeat strokes instead of using confident lines. How do you think you could improve your results? I can improve by practicing quick gesture drawings and reinforcing my understanding of facial proportions. Using construction lines more effectively and developing more confident strokes will help improve both accuracy and cleanliness. Repetition of short-time exercises will also increase my speed and precision.

What did you learn? I learned how to transition from detailed observation to abstraction by progressively simplifying forms. The 1-minute drawing helped me understand how to identify the essential features of a face quickly. This exercise reinforced the importance of proportion, line quality, and simplification in representing three-dimensional forms on a twodimensional surface.
