Foreword

Hark the students’ voices swelling, Strong and true and clear, Alma Mater’s love they’re telling, Ringing far and near. – James Southall Wilson Our alma mater, Nallamuthu Gounder Mahalingam College, started functioning under the auspices of Pollachi Kalvi Kazhagam as a Pre-University institution with an opening strength of 160 students on 12th July, 1957. At first, the college was christened Nallamuthu Gounder Municipal College, the name given after its chief donor. A munificent donation from Arutchelvar Dr. N. Mahalingam enabled it to be upgraded into a Degree College with courses in Economics, Mathematics and Physics in 1959. The UG courses in Chemistry, Commerce and English Literature were started in the years 1965, 1968 and 1970 respectively. The alumni who host the Golden Jubilee Reunion Event – 2022 are all-male UG students of the college who entered the portals of NGM in July 1970 and spent a glorious period of three continuous academic years glowing with fun and frolic, joys and sorrows, and, hope and promise. We were all 245 in strength, of whom 63 belonged to BA Economics stream, 21 to BA English Literature, 30 to BSc Mathematics, 31 to BSc Physics, 29 to BSc Chemistry and 71 to BCom. Some of our batch mates are unfortunately no more, some more we cannot trace to this day and the rest, numbering 125, have joined together to cherish those three years of academic togetherness after a long spell of half-a-century. During our entire period of study, i.e. from 1970 to 1973, Prof. M. Alkondan provided strategic leadership as Principal and steered the college in the vigorous pursuit of academic excellence. Prof. N. Namasivayam assisted him ably as Vice-Principal and both of them worked closely with a highly motivated team of 75 faculty members and office staff. Now that the college has more than 250 faculty members and about 5500 students on its roll pursuing 60 different courses of study including PG and Research Programmes is the proof of the growth visualized by those pioneers. Our classes were all housed in a two-storeyed rectangular building along with an adjacent temporary structure of two lecture halls. The main building also contained the Principal’s chambers and office, library, laboratories, cooperative book store, canteen, NCC office and faculty rooms. A gallery class in the ground floor served as the college auditorium after the class hours. There were two land parcels as sprawling playground on the campus, one opposite to Ambi’s canteen and another bordering the railway tracks in front of the RSM hostel. A well-maintained tennis court was there near the front gate on the Palakkad Road. The Principal’s quarters formed part of the other end of this road inside the then campus of 26 acres. Foreword

hostellers of our batch were accommodated both in the campus hostel of two floors

and in the Nachimuthu Polytechnic Hostel situated 4 kms. away on Udumalpet Road. We had spent three full contented and contentious years of our life in the NGM arena. Contented because we were taught by great masters who honed our skills and shaped our ways of life. Contentious because we were in contrasting ideological groups which made and marred our campus life now and then, especially after the Students Union election every year. Now, we have all come together, after five decades, to recall and cherish those unforgettable days. At this juncture, we like to thank immensely Dr. B.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar (President), Shri M.Balasubramaniam (Secretary) and Dr. R. Muthukumaran (Principal) for welcoming us back, after five full decades, to the college and hosting the Reunion Event to our heart’s content. The college Alumni Association, led by the ever-enthusiastic President Shri G.D.Gopalakrishnan and other members of the Management and the Faculty need to be thanked here for their earnest cooperation in organizing this event in a glorious manner. It is our bounden duty to be grateful towards our octogenarian Gurujis of the 1970-73 period who have been kind enough in accepting our invitation to attend the function despite the risks of long distance travel from far-flung places. We hereby acknowledge the designing and layout work done beuatifully by N. Krishna kumar, Sudar Designing and Publishing House, Vadapalani, Chennai. We also take this opportunity to express our sense of gratitude to all of our sponsors and volunteers (whose services are acknowledged in detail elsewhere) without whom this once-in-a-lifetime event is unimaginable. – Organizing Committee (GJ Batch Reunion – 2022) 4 NGM College, Pollachi

NGM College

An Autonomous College, Re-Accredited with ‘A’ Grade by NAAC Empower the Youth to Enrich the Nation Dr. B.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar President MESSAGE 10.06.2022 I am happy to know that the Alumni Batch (1970-73) of NGM College, Pollachi is meeting at the college on the 3rd of July 2022. Further it also happens to be the Golden Jubilee Alumni Batch of the College and that will make the meeting all the more significant. All of us owe a lot to our school and college which has groomed us all and has made us what we are today. The meeting will provide all an opportunity to revisit the college and meet their batch-mates and some of the Professors of their times. This will take them back to their good old student days. On behalf of the Management, we too happily look forward for their visit and make sure the event is enjoyable. NGM is the vision of its founders. From a very humble beginning the college over the last nearly seven decades has grown in size and stature and is ranked today by NIRF to be one among the top best hundred Arts & Science Colleges of the Nation. We are equally happy to know that the past students of the college are all happily settled in their lives and remember the college with pride and gratitude. We need to strengthen the Alumni Association of the College and maintain the bondage between the college and the past students. I take this opportunity to welcome all and wish them a happy get together.
