JSS 0251 – Technical Documentation Leader in IETM Technology

JSS 0251 defines a defence-wide standard for technical publications to accompany defence equipment, aligning documentation from multiple Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) under a uniform structure so end-users can reference manuals easily during emergencies. The standard, documented as JSS 0251-01: 2015, applies to both soft copies and hard copies of manuals. (Pages 2–4)
The standard outlines the potential types of accompanying documents, including design specifications, user handbooks, technical manuals, procurement drawings, packing specifications, component lists, carried spares, installation spares, and engineering support packages. It also specifies cover page design, typography, ink color rules (text in black, with exceptions for security classifications and important instructions), and paper requirements (80 GSM or higher). For simple equipment, some publications may be combined, while complex systems may require multiple manuals for subsystems. (Pages 4–6)
Governance and implementation details: the guidelines are drafted by the Directorate of Standardization, Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence. The aim is to standardize documentation across OEMs so that manuals can be produced and delivered both as electronic/digital (soft copies) and physical copies.
