I’m 27 and in this relatively short lifespan I haven’t just lived but really waltzed with life up close. There was a point in my life, at 13, when I nearly lost belief in myself. I couldn’t see my life beyond my disease— Cancer. At that point someone, a stranger, a wish-maker, chose to believe in me and met me disguised as team Make-A-Wish India. Like a magical genie they swept into my life and granted me a wish. “I want to learn how to make the world’s best cake,” I told them. Critical illnesses are tackled one day at a time. To get to the other side of it we must have something that inspires us and keeps us going. My wish motivated me to keep going. I distinctly remember the day my wish was fulfilled once I was healed. They didn’t just take me to baking class but curated an entire experience around it. I got to bake in a professional pastry kitchen, wearing a chef coat with my name on it, a cute chef hat. The beauty of this entire experience was in the details they carefully thought of. That was the first time in a long time that I felt like I was more than a sick child. Instead, I had the biggest smile and felt like the happiest little girl! This experience has had a significant impact on my life. It left me wanting more, to feel that joy again. I continued baking, experimenting and eventually established my own small business, a cloud kitchen, “Oraya’s Oven,” once I graduated. This business is my pride and joy, something I built from scratch despite all odds. That is the power of a wish. The power of belief a stranger once chose to place in me when even I didn’t believe in myself. It’s not only about saving a child’s life. It’s also about ensuring they are enabled and encouraged to live a life beyond cancer. My fairytale has had its own twists and turns. That doesn’t make it unhappy, just eventful. I was diagnosed with a second cancer at 25. This time cancer took from me what I once dearly built, Oraya’s Oven. But having built from scratch once, I knew I can and will do it again. This time around I channeled my creativity into writing. I wrote two books, one of which I recently self-published. I’m delighted to be writing to you and sharing with you a copy of my book The Audacious Lover. I hope my words can help you fall in love with yourself, as my journey has enabled me to. I hope my story and journey not only serve as inspiration but also highlight the life-changing work team Make-A-Wish India is doing.
