Military Operations and Yom Yerushalayim

By Callie Mitchell, SAVED News International Correspondent, Jerusalem, Israel - Reprint from February 2023 May was a wild month for Israel. Beginning May 2, we had rocket fire and retaliation with Gaza, increased terror incidents. Then the five-day Operation Shield and Arrow, Israel targeted key leaders from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist group, also weapon stores and launch centers. It was a successful mission, with a few differences from the normal policy. Historically, Israel held Hamas responsible for any terror events from Gaza. This is because they are the elected ruling body over Gaza. This time Israel worked hard to hit PIJ targets and not involve Hamas. Also, as Egypt worked to broker a ceasefire, Israel only made a “no strings attached” agreement. In the past, Israel made concessions on releasing prisoners and the border. This time it was a strictly “you stop firing/we stop firing” agreement. Then a week later, we celebrated Yom Yerushalayim, Jerusalem Day. Yom Yerushalayim is a beautiful celebration of a historic event of biblical proportions: the day Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel since King David, came fully under the authority of the Jewish people in the state of Israel. After the War of Independence in 1948, East Jerusalem, including the Old City, fell to Jordan who forcefully removed the Jewish people. West Jerusalem remained as part of Israel and that was the status quo until 1967. History began to unfold when Israel pre-empted an attack on Egypt in response to Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser threatening a war with the stated goal of the destruction of Israel. Nasser not only made threats but also military moves in the Straights of Tiran that were considered Acts of War according to International Law. Israel’s intelligent maneuvering decimated the Egyptian air force which allowed for a ground invasion on the Sinai. Facing defeat, Egypt convinced Jordan to attack Israel, which history shows did not work in their favor. On the third day, Israel captured East Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria (the West Bank) from the Jordanians. They celebrated by worshiping at the Western Wall of Temple Mount. The war continued for three more days, and Israel soon defeated Syria, expanding its borders to include the Golan Heights. Tiny little Israel defeated three border nations in six days. Three nations stood against the will of a Holy God to establish the people of Israel in the land of Israel for the sake of His holy name (Ezekiel 36). This is one of the greatest days in Israel’s modern history and historically its been a very fun celebration. Our Arab neighbors have always referred to this celebration as the Nakba (catastrophe). In recent years its become riddled with security concerns. Because of the rocket fire from Gaza two years ago and the Temple Mount activist community growing larger. Even so, it’s not a fridge activist holiday, however much the media might like to portray it as such. It’s a mainstream Israeli holiday that almost everyone celebrates with joy! We hope that the nations will be glad with us, and we pray especially for our Arab neighbors to get the revelation so that they will be blessed. Contact us. Advertise with us.
