And if they’re already here, we should be revoking their visa,” the Secretary said. Rubio shared a video of his remarks on his X account, writing, “America will not host foreigners who celebrate the death of our fellow citizens. Visa revocations are underway. If you are here on a visa and cheering on the public assassination of a political figure, prepare to be deported. You are not welcome in this country.” Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin also called for visa cancellations targeting individuals who glorify the killings of Americans. Earlier, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau posted on X, “I want to underscore that foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country. I have been disgusted to see some on social media praising, rationalizing, or making light of the event, and have directed our consular officials to undertake appropriate action. Please feel free to bring such comments by foreigners to my attention so that the @StateDept can protect the American people.” Rubio defended the move, saying the US should not admit people who engage in “negative and destructive behavior.” He confirmed in an X post that visa revocations have already begun, with additional reviews expected as part of a broader crackdown following Kirk’s assassination. Speaking at the India-USA Space Collaboration event in Washington, which saw the participation of astronauts Sunita Williams, Nick Hague, Butch Wilmore, and IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, Ambassador Kwatra said the gathering brought together “individuals with a space-centric view of Earth,” offering a refreshing departure from the routine bureaucratic world.” We always have an earth-centric view of space. This is the first time we will have a space-centric view of space. We, India and ISRO and NASA have an excellent series of cooperation over a period of time,” Kwatra said. Kwatra recalled that the India-US space journey began in the 1970s with initiatives such as the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE), aimed at educational outreach. Since then, the partnership has expanded to multiple high-profile missions, including the Chandrayaan series, India’s signing of the Artemis Accords, and the joint NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission launched earlier this year.”Looking ahead, India plans a manned moon mission and a space station between 2028 and 2035, and NASA will continue to be a vital partner...,” Kwatra said. Meanwhile, addressing the event, Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams reflected on her experience as Commander of Expedition 72, calling it a “super difficult challenge” that underscored the importance of teamwork, resilience, and communication.”It is a super diffi- cult challenge to take, but we have been super fortunate in our time to see different things.. We have only taken different experiences that you have and added them into the spacecraft you are training for...” Williams said during the event. She further stated that the mission lasted longer than expected, providing lessons on team support and emphasising the importance of effective communication.”We thought we would be up there for a short time, but the mission lasted longer than expected. The biggest thing we learnt was the importance of team support and the value of listening to each other. Teamwork really is equally important to survival and success,” Williams said. The mission, which began in September 2024 and concluded with Crew-9’s splashdown in March this year, conducted over 1,000 hours of research on human health, materials science, biology, and fire safety. It also en- hanced 3D metal printing capabilities in orbit and prepared the first wooden satellite for deployment. IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, selected for India’s human spaceflight programme, joined the event virtually. His presence was highlighted as a symbol of India’s next phase in human space exploration, in collaboration with international partners. The event, hosted by the Indian Embassy, was attended by NASA representatives, embassy colleagues, and members of the Indian diaspora. (ANI)

Both sides agreed to intensify efforts to achieve an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial trade agreement. According to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, a team of officials from the Office of the United States Trade Representative, led by Lynch, who serves as the chief negotiator for the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement, visited India on September 16, 2025. “They held discussions with officials from the Department of Commerce, led by the Special Secretary, Department of Commerce, on India-US trade ties, including the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement,” the ministry said. “Acknowledging the enduring importance of bilateral trade between India and the US, the discussions were positive and forward-looking, covering various aspects of the trade deal. It was decided to intensify efforts to achieve early conclusion of a mutually beneficial Trade Agreement,” the statement added. A US Embassy spokesperson confirmed that Lynch had a constructive meeting in Delhi with Agrawal to discuss the next phase of negotiations. Sources said the chief negotiators of both countries agreed to continue discus- sions in a virtual format. India and the United States have already held five rounds of negotiations for the trade deal, though the most recent round, scheduled for August, was postponed. Over the past few months, both sides have been working toward an interim agreement. In July, US President Donald Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, despite optimism about an interim deal that could have helped avoid higher duties. A few days later, he imposed an additional 25 percent tariff, citing India’s continued imports of Russian oil. The total tariff of 50 percent took effect on August 27. India has expressed concerns about US demands to open its agricultural and dairy sectors, which are viewed as critical for providing livelihoods to a large portion of the population. Negotiations for a balanced and mutually beneficial Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) began in March this year, with the aim of completing the first stage of the accord by October-November 2025. Prime Minister Modi also conveyed his best wishes for the success of Denmark’s ongoing Presidency of the Council of the European Union and its tenure as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. The leaders also discussed pressing regional and global matters. Modi reiterated India’s consistent support for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and for the early restoration of peace and stability. The release stated that Prime Minister Frederiksen reaffirmed Denmark’s strong support for the swift conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-EU Free Trade Agreement, as well as for the success of the AI Impact Summit to be hosted by India in 2026. In a post on X, Modi said the two countries had reaffirmed their strong commitment to advancing the Green Strategic Partnership. “Had a very good conversation with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark today. We reaffirmed our strong commitment to strengthening our Green Strategic Partnership and to an early conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement. Conveyed best wishes for Denmark’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Also discussed our shared interest in bringing an early end to the conflict in Ukraine,” he wrote. The official account of the Denmark Prime Minister’s Office said the two leaders exchanged views on global challenges. “PM Frederiksen, after talk with Narendra Modi: ‘We reaffirmed the strength of our relations and Green Strategic Partnership. Exchanged views on global challenges. I emphasized importance of cooperation, also on addressing global consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine,’” the post read. Diplomatic relations between India and Denmark, established in September 1949, are rooted in historical ties, shared democratic traditions, and a common commitment to regional and international peace and stability. Bilateral relations were elevated to a “Green Strategic Partnership” during the virtual summit held in September 2020 between Modi and Frederiksen. The ongoing development of India-Denmark relations continues to be guided by this partnership. (ANI)

September 19, 2025 Friday India This Week “Ready to take India-EU relationship to next level...”: PM Modi thanks European Commission President for birthday wishes EU-India RelationshipFrom Page 1 Joint Communication outlining a “New Strategic EU-India Agenda”, marking a significant milestone in EU-India relations. This initiative, announced by President Ursula von der Leyen in her Political Guidelines for 2024-2029, aims to deepen, broaden, and better coordinate bilateral cooperation, enhance prosperity and security for both partners, and help tackle major global challenges.” Now is the time to focus on reliable partners and double down on partnerships rooted in shared interests and guided by common values. With our new EU-India strategy, we are taking our relationship to the next level. Advancing trade, investment and talent mobility. Strengthening our joint economic security. Advancing the clean transition and driving innovation together. Deepening our industrial cooperation in defence. Europe is already India’s biggest trading partner, and we are committed to finalising our Free Trade Agreement by the end of the year. Europe is open for business. And we are ready to invest in our shared future with India,” President Ursula von der Leyen said, according to a press release. Following the college’s visit to India in February, the joint communication outlines the EU’s strategic vision for enhancing cooperation with New Delhi. It identifies five areas of shared interest and complementary strengths, building on existing ties while addressing areas that present potential for increased engagement. Wishes have poured in from across the world on PM Modi’s birthday. Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump, and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni are among leaders who conveyed their best wishes to PM Modi. Why do you believe you should have power To serve the people of your land? If you love the perks that come with power, How can you call yourself a servant of the people You are using politics to further your own ambition, Rather than serving with true devotion. How can your community progress If your eye is set on power, and you genuflect At the command of a donor who can sway you With a penny and impose his demands? Justice demands fair play in every role; Community requires honest players. When honesty is traded for wealth and power, Casting aspersions on others is unfair. There is none perfect; all make mistakes. But the danger lies in reveling in them, And repeating them, seduced by gain, Reaping the crimes one shamelessly commits. September 19, 2025 Friday India-US Joint Military Drill Yudh Abhyas 2025 Concludes in Alaska Washington, DC [US], September 16 (ANI): The annual India-US military exercise Yudh Abhyas 2025 concluded in Alaska on Monday (local time) after two weeks of intensive joint training, further strengthening defense cooperation between the Indian Army and the US Army. The Indian Embassy in Washington said the exercise, which began on September 1 with a formal opening ceremony, “has grown significantly since its launch in 2002.” What began as a platoon-level drill has evolved into one of the most advanced bilateral exercises India conducts with any partner nation. “Since 2002, #YudhAbhyas has grown from a platoon-level drill into one of the most ad- vanced bilateral exercises India conducts with any partner nation,” the Embassy noted on X. The final phase of the drill focused on integrated operations involving infantry, artillery, aviation, electronic warfare, and counter-drone systems under a joint command structure. Both sides also conducted live-fire maneuvers and combined battle group Monsoon death toll in Himachal Pradesh rises to 417 as rain havoc continues Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], September 16 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh has suffered a heavy human and infrastructure loss this monsoon season with 417 deaths reported so far, including 236 in rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods and drowning, and 181 in road accidents, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said on Tuesday.Since June 20, when the monsoon arrived in the hill state, disasters triggered by torrential rains have also left 477 people injured and 45 missing. The calamity has further led to the death of over 2,407 animals and nearly 27,000 poultry birds, according to the cumulative report compiled by the SDMA.The disaster authority stated that the state has recorded 1,668 houses fully damaged, 29,362 partially damaged, and 584 shops/ factories destroyed. More than 2,000 cowsheds and labour huts have also collapsed, rendering hundreds of families homeless. On the infrastructure front, Himachal Pradesh has suffered losses worth over Rs 4,58,000 lakh (Rs 4,582 crore). September 19, 2025 Friday India This Week SC Says Abolition of Waqf-by-User Not Prima Facie Arbitrary New Delhi [India], September 15 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay the provision in the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 that abolished the concept of ‘Waqf-by-user’, stating that prima facie the deletion “cannot be said to be arbitrary.” “If the legislature, in 2025, finds that on account of the concept of Waqf-by-user, huge government properties have been encroached upon and, to stop the said menace, takes steps for deletion of the said provision, the said amendment, prima facie, cannot be said to be arbitrary,” the court observed. Waqf-by-user is a concept that recognizes a property as Waqf not through a formal dedication deed but through long, consistent public use of the property for religious or pious purposes. The 2025 amendment deleted Section 3(r)(i) of the original Waqf Act of 1995, which had recognized this concept. Petitioners challenging the amendment argued that the deletion would adversely affect several ageold Waqf properties without formal registration deeds. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice AG Masih, however, noted that the Waqf Act of 1923 required registration of Waqfs, and if properties remained unregistered for decades, grievances cannot now be raised. “We are, therefore, of the view that if Mutawallis for a period of 102 years could not get the Waqf registered, as required under earlier provisions, they cannot claim that they be allowed to continue with the Waqf even if they are not registered,” the 128-page order stated. The court added, “If for 30 long years, the Mutawallis had chosen not to make an application for registration, they cannot contend that the provision now requiring the application to be accompanied by a copy of the Waqf deed is arbitrary. Further, if the legislature, on noticing misuse of the Waqf properties, finds that all such applications should now be accompanied Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], September 15 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said people of one religion are being targeted through the Waqf Amendment Act. He described the Supreme Court’s decision as a positive step and expressed hope that other problematic sections of the Act would also be addressed, after the court refused to stay the entire law but put certain provisions on hold. Speaking to reporters, Abdullah said, “We have been saying that people of one religion are being targeted through this bill. It is good that the Supreme Court has also understood this. It will be good if other objectionable parts in this Act are also highlighted.” Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court refused to stay the entire Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025, but put certain provisions on hold pending final adjudication of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Act. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih observed that some sections of the amended Act require protection. The Chief Minister also urged authorities to withdraw the Public Safety Act (PSA) case against AAP MLA Mehraj Malik and release him promptly. “PSA case against him should be withdrawn and he should be released as soon as possible,” Abdullah said. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Mehraj Malik, representing Doda constituency in Jammu and Kashmir, was booked under provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act 1978 (PSA) on September 8, citing activities prejudi- by a copy of the Waqf deed, the same cannot be said to be arbitrary.” The bench refused to stay the provision requiring all Waqfs to be registered under Section 36 of the Amendment Act, noting that registration requirements existed in earlier laws. The court cited instances such as the Andhra Pradesh government approaching the court after the State Waqf Board notified government lands as Waqfs, which the apex court later quashed. “After noticing such instances of misuse, if the legislature finds that the concept of ‘Waqf by User’ has to be abolished prospectively, in our view, the same cannot prima facie be said to be arbitrary,” the court said. The apex court further stated that the deletion of clause (i) of Section 3(r) of the original Waqf Act would come into effect from the date the amendment Act took effect, and thus would not apply retrospectively. “Therefore, the contention that lands vested in Waqfs would be grabbed by the government prima facie holds no water,” the bench noted. The top court also refused to stay Section 3d of the Waqf Amendment Act, which voids Waqfs on properties notified as ancient monuments under the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act, 1904, or the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. Similarly, Section 3E, which bars declaring tribal lands as Waqf to safeguard Scheduled Tribes, was also not stayed. The apex court passed an interim order on pleas to stay the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, putting certain provisions on hold while allowing others to remain in effect. cial to the maintenance of public order. The PSA, a preventive detention law, allows authorities in Jammu & Kashmir to detain individuals without trial for up to two years in certain cases. Abdullah further commented on the highway closure in the Kashmir Valley, stating that it is under the central gov- ernment’s control. “If the highway were under me, I would have opened it. This highway falls under the jurisdiction of the Indian government. I will speak to the highways minister Gadkari ji, urging him to restore the highway and open it. I would also like to say to the Railway minister that more trains should be operated from here,” he added. “People of One Religion Are Being Targeted Through This Bill”: J-K CM Omar Abdullah After SC Order on Waqf Act Ethanol-Blended Fuel Safe for Vehicles, Says Hardeep Puri New Delhi [India], September 15 (ANI): Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, on Monday assured that ethanol-blended petrol poses no adverse effects on vehicles, dismissing claims of controversy surrounding India’s ethanol blending programme. Speaking to reporters in Varanasi, Minister Puri stated, “There is no impact on vehicles.” He highlighted that the ethanol initiative not only strengthens India’s energy security but also empowers farmers to become energy providers. The programme has reportedly saved the country Rs 1.4 lakh crore in crude oil imports while contributing to lower pollution levels. “The Government had targeted 10% ethanol blending by November 2020, which we achieved five months ago. The 20% blending target (E20), initially set for 2030 and advanced to 2025, has already been met. There is no controversy,” the Minister said, addressing concerns over further blending plans. India has significantly accelerated its ethanol blending efforts over the past decade, rising from just 1.53% in 2014 to 10% by 2022. The government’s ethanol programme is also closely linked to India’s green energy transition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the world’s first bamboo-based second-generation ethanol plant at Numaligarh Refinery Ltd in Assam, a Rs 5,000 crore project that began with a foundation stone laid in February 2019. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified that E20 petrol has only a marginal impact on mileage—approximately 1–2% in vehicles calibrated for E20 and 3–6% in older models—and does not affect vehicle insurance validity. Automobile manufacturers continue to provide support through authorised service stations for any tuning or part replacements required to ensure optimal performance. Since 2014–15, ethanol blending has saved over Rs 1.4 lakh crore in foreign exchange, ensured payments of more than Rs 1.2 lakh crore to farmers, and reduced significant carbon dioxide emissions. The Supreme Court recently dismissed a plea challenging the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol, while Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari termed recent criticism of the programme as a “paid campaign.” (ANI) To Place Advertisements Call: 301-917-4800/301-445-00200 Email: indiathisweekads@gmail.com www.indiathisweek.us
