of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. "Unity in the Silhouette Community" Georgia◆South Carolina◆Nigeria◆South Africa◆United Arab Emirates 2021–2025 SEP President’s Reflection by Janice Coats Hardy, SEP President Honk, Honk! As I lift my wings from the SEP Geese’s Leadership Nest, I do so with gratitude and pride. Just as geese fly farther together in formation, my four years as SEP President have shown that leadership is never a solo journey — success takes teamwork, inclusiveness, and every Silhouette’s voice. Together, we achieved milestones worth celebrating: reactivating chapters, chartering the Dazzling GEMs, increasing scholarships, publishing our history book, and strengthening our digital presence. These accomplishments belong not to me alone, but to the entire flock — my executive team, chapter presidents, and the 233 active members across 15 chapters whose dedication lifted SEP higher. As a prolific and compassionate SEP leader of action, I stand on solid ground, keeping my love and devotion for the Silhouette sisterhood steadfast and unmovable as I officially conclude my four-year administration term, rapidly approaching on August 31, 2025. My SEP leadership experience has reinforced my belief that, just as “it takes a village to raise a child,” it takes the inclusiveness of diverse Silhouettes’ uniqueness to produce a leader’s success with completeness. The noted “Geese Story,” coupled with Maxwell’s concept that “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work,” served as prevalent leadership models throughout my administration. These concepts emphasized the significance of all Silhouettes’ input in the leadership process, demonstrating that effective leadership is never a solo journey — truly, “No Silhouette is an Island.” For this reason, my leadership actions reflected special emphasis on defending my statement from the 2021 SEP election: “A vote for me is a vote for you!” This principle guided my administration and ensured that every member’s voice contributed meaningfully to the collective success of our sisterhood. Certainly, as I flap my wings to fly away from the 2021-2025 SEP geese’s leadership nest, I am extending my final expression of sincerest gratitude to my efficient executive board for allowing me a supportive opportunity to serve in a leadership capacity. My executive board comprised Silhouettes Florence Reed, Executive Assistant, Vice President, Myra Alexander, Recording Secretary, Dr. Eleanor Hopson, Financial Secretary, Deborah Brown, Treasurer, Dr. Gail Harris, Dr. Sylvia Flen and Debra Abrams, Parliamentarians, Debra Herring, Chaplain, Historian, Janice Hall- Dean, Scholarship chair, Nicole Williams, initial Journalist, Jora McDonald, Sergeant at- Arms, Wendolyn Edwards, appointed entertainer, Rose Bacon, and Lisa Holmes-Langford, final appointed Journalist and Technology specialist coupled with SEP Chapter Presidents: Silhouettes Linda Jones, Albany Chapter, Rosemary English, Aiken, SC Chapter, Myra Alexander, Atlanta, Dr. Eleanor Hopson, Augusta Chapter, Beaufort/Jasper-Hilton, Dr. Loreli Munford Bishop/ Manning/Shaw Chapter, Edna Wright, Conway/Myrtle Beach, Rose Bacon and Cynthia Brown, Beaufort/Jasper, CDAC , Deborah Herring and Tiffany Dinkins, Yvonne Feaster, Columbia, SC, Dia Taylor and NeShanta Banks, Decatur, Cora Pooler, Dublin/Laurens, Felicia Littlejohn and Nicole Williams, Greenville, SC , Florence Reed, Lowcountry, Edna Wright, Conway/Myrtle Beach; Time Keeper and Covington/Conyers’ Chapter President, Nwaka Hughes, Jora McDonald, Savannah, Pearl King, Stockbridge-Jonesboro, and Chansidy Daniels, Thomasville. As it is the norm for unprecedented changes of “losing and gaining” to surge in the leadership world. Both Myrtle Beach/Conway and Conyers/Covington chapters were reactivated under my administration, while three Georgia chapters: Dublin’s/Laurence, Savannah, and Thomasville became inactive chapters. Fortunately, the Savannah Chapter has recently been reactivated due to Silhouette Jora McDonald’s proactive leadership. I experienced an ultimate level of pride that I just could not hide when the “Dazzling GEM’S (Grovetown, Evansville, Martinez) was chartered under my administration with chapter president, JoAnna Kelly’s leadership. Kudos to the dazzling GEM’s Kappa alumni leader, Polemarch Ari Joffrion, for playing a vital role in getting his silhouette chapter chartered. Hopefully, his stance will serve as an immeasurable motivational route for other SEP Kappa alumni chapters to follow his lead. Fortunately, several SEP supporters took time for their busy schedules to render assistance in this crucial historically driven new chapter chartering ceremony: Janice Hall-Dean, SEP’s Historian and 14th national president, Financial Secretary Deborah Brown, Augusta Chapter President Dr. Eleanor Hopson, Greenville’s president, Nicole Williams, Stockbridge-Jonesboro chapter president and president-elect, Pearl King, coupled with other Augusta chapters members such as Valerie Williams and Vickie Wheeler. Without any hesitancy, I believe that my SEP support system will always linger in my heart ‘s treasure; in that, my supporters were most instrumental in completing most projected platforms successfully. Therefore, I feel obligated to continue my service as a team advocate based on need in moving our province forward for improved adventures. Also, I feel eternally blessed and grateful to have had a caring and supportive unit of silhouettes who tended to have demonstrated unwavering supportive compassion during my tenure. Namely, the successful implementation of the SEP history book project platform under the leadership of Silhouette Janice Hall-Dean, increased scholarship donations for both GA and SC under the leadership of Silhouette Nikki Williams, the noted flipbook newsletter and the newly updated webpage and social medial connection under the leadership of Silhouette Lisa Holmes Langford presented special flavor enhancement during this administration. Silhouette Loreli Munford, president of Bishopville/Shaw/ AFB Chapter, was the only supporter of the original Youth Leadership Training platform. Fun-level Zoom activities such as a formal Tea party with a professional entertaining artist under Debra Abrams' leadership, social sisterly-based interaction with Silhouette Rose Bacon, our appointed entertainer, African attire meeting, and Father’s Day recognition were all successful. However, despite the non-participatory nature of the projected study of outstanding historical Black females for mentoring and sisterly relations, as it depicts Zora Neale Hurston’s, Their Eyes Were Watching God, some silhouettes appreciated this platform as being valuable in communication. (See SWOT Analysis on next page) Abbreviated Conclave 2025 Updates — “Diamonds in the Desert” SEP proudly congratulates the Western Province, led by President Jacqueline Berryman and Host Chapter President Monika Lasley, for a stellar Conclave in Phoenix, Arizona. Under the spirited theme “Diamonds in the Desert”, their hospitality, leadership, and sisterhood shined brightly. We extend heartfelt kudos to National President Theresa Foster, 1st Vice President Scedella Gregory, and 2nd Vice President Juanita Wills for their “WHALE DONE” service and accomplishments over the past four years. Conclave highlights included early morning devotions, vibrant business sessions, joyful social gatherings, and the memorable Awards Luncheon and Banquet. Special recognition goes to SEP members who represented us so well: Marlene Ali; President-Elect Pearl King; Kris Manlove; Myra Alexander; Janice Hall-Dean; Cynthia Brown; Samantha Gleaton; and Florence Reed, who led the largest attending group from the Lowcountry (Charleston) Chapter. Kudos also to the sisters who traveled alongside their Kappa men, adding to the spirit of unity and pride. Looking Ahead SEP congratulates Silhouette Scedella Gregory, our incoming National President, along with Silhouettes Shirley Pickney and Nadine Bond on their new national roles. And with another honk of pride, we celebrate our 2025 SEP Silhouette of the Year, Lisa Holmes-Langford, recipient of the National Silhouette Spotlight Award — a shining honor for our province! As I pass the torch, I leave with faith in SEP’s bright future. Congratulations to President-Elect Pearl King and her leadership team — truly “FIRED UP AND READY TO LEAD!” May we continue to soar, in formation, on the updraft of unity, service, and sisterhood. Honk, Honk! The flock is strong, and SEP will keep flying higher. With Sisterly Love, Dr. Janice Coats-Hardy
Evaluating the Process/SWOT Approach Evaluation has been a vital part of my leadership approach. Using the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis tool, I assessed SEP’s progress during my administration. SWOT Analysis Summary Strengths • Strong chapter community service projects. • Increased scholarship donations and appreciation for sisterly relations. • Respect for parliamentary order enhanced meetings. • Successful SEP History Book project and updated website for better communication. • Members valued inclusive leadership and engaging activities. • National 2nd Vice President Juanita Wills participated in an SEP banquet. Weaknesses • Limited understanding of leadership styles led to apathy and tension. • Inconsistent report submissions and lack of full chapter representation at conferences. Opportunities • Strengthened bonds with Kappa Alpha Psi through recognition, collaboration, and shared events. Threats • Loss of three chapters and risk of low engagement in conferences. • Clique-like behavior threatened unity. • Ongoing need to focus on the “3Rs”: Retain, Recruit, and Reactivate.
Silhouette Deborah Robinson Herring Saying So Long and Passing the Torch As I prepare to step away from my role as your Province Chaplain, I do so with a heart full of gratitude. From the Editor’s Desk SEP Editor/Technology Specialist As I turn the page to a new chapter, I am filled with gratitude for the privilege of serving as your Pulse newsletter editor and Technology Specialist. This role has been more than tasks and deadlines—it has been a front-row seat to the joy, unity, and accomplishments of our Silhouette community, and a daily reminder of how much we can achieve together. I am especially thankful to Madam President Dr. Janice Coats Hardy and Janice Hall Dean, Past National Silhouette President, for mentoring me and giving me the opportunity to be part of the Geese’s Nest. Their guidance has shaped my growth, inspired me to serve with humility, and reminded me that leadership and sisterhood always flourish when we lift one another. Over the past few Provinces, I have been honored to strengthen our connections—renewing the Southeastern Province Silhouettes webpage, revitalizing the SEP Facebook presence, assisting in the development of the SEP History Book, and introducing new technological platforms. I have also been blessed to support memorable Province gatherings: in Charleston, SC, where we celebrated new beginnings together, and in “Boots on the Ground” Augusta, GA, where our shared mission landed with purpose and impact—each leaving a lasting mark on my heart. I have learned much about sisterhood, the power of collaboration, and the ways we can uplift one another toward a shared mission. I’m especially grateful for the new relationships I’ve built along the way—even when it wasn’t always easy—because they have become some of the most meaningful parts of this journey. I pray that the bonds we have nurtured will continue to grow, and that every Silhouette will find encouragement and strength in one another as we move forward together. I am confident that the next Technology Specialist will take this platform even higher, continuing to innovate, inspire, and strengthen our community in new and exciting ways. May this role—and all of you—continue to “walk in faith and serve in purpose,” just as Acts 16 reminds us, knowing that shared belief and action can transform lives. "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: if either of them falls down, one can help the other up." — Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NIV) "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household." — Acts 16:31 (NIV) Thank you for allowing me to be part of your story—and for being such an unforgettable part of mine. I will carry these memories, lessons, and friendships with me always.
