"Maskara" is a Filipino word that translates to "mask" in English. It embodies the concept of concealment and adaptation to societal norms. It reflects the idea of individuals wearing metaphorical masks to navigate societal expectations, concealing their true selves to fit in and avoid being labeled as misfits. The magazine is titled "Maskara" to shed light on the profound ways individuals may hide aspects of their identity to conform to societal standards. It acknowledges the tendency for people to wear metaphorical masks, concealing their true selves to avoid judgment or exclusion. "Maskara" as the title encapsulates the magazine's mission to unravel and explore the stories of those who have felt compelled to mask their authentic identities. It serves as a platform to unmask the challenges, triumphs, and unique experiences of individuals who navigate a world that often expects conformity. By choosing "Maskara," the magazine aims to initiate conversations about societal expectations, empower individuals to embrace their true identities, and challenge the norms that may contribute to the masking of diverse voices. Sex refers to the biological distinctions, including reproductive organs and chromosomes, that exist between males and females. Conversely, gender is an artifact of culture and society, comprising expectations, behaviors, and roles that are conventionally linked to the designation of male or female. Recognizing that although these notions are interconnected, they exist on a continuum rather than a binary distinction, thereby facilitating a more comprehensive comprehension of identity. Sex and Sexual Orientation: The Unseen Link “Your biological sex determines your sexual orientation” Pump the brakes on that assumption! In opposition to conventional wisdom, an individual’s attraction is not determined by their biological composition. Regardless of an individual’s anatomical characteristics, sexual orientation is a matter of emotional connection and person attraction. This places significant emphasis on the necessity of liberating oneself from antiquated conventions, promoting inclusivity towards varied manifestations of affection, and commemorating the myriad of identities that extend beyond conventional limits. Gender and Social Construct: Shattering the Mold “ Gender is just a societal invention; it doesn’t really matter” Gender cannot be easily disregarded as a simple social construction. Although gender is a construct of society, its consequences are pervasive and observable in our day-to-day existence Gender-based societal expectations and duties exert a significant impact on individuals, molding their experiences and opportunities. Nevertheless, this also necessitates a reassessment of these conventions, advocating for a community that values diversity and grants individuals the liberty to manifest their genuine identities. Deconstructing antiquated norms and constructing a more inclusive world where individuals of all genders can thrive unrestricted by predetermined roles is the primary focus. 05
