Galing Pook Awards 2009

The Galing Pook Awards Program

The Galing Pook Awards program was established in 1993 to recognize innovation and excellence in local governance. It has since recognized over 240 programs from 158 local government units, focusing on positive results, people's participation, innovation, transferability, sustainability, and efficiency in service delivery. The winners are chosen through a rigorous screening process and represent a diverse range of programs from different regions in the Philippines (p.1).

Moving Towards an Archipelago of Good Governance

In 2009, the Galing Pook Awards expanded to recognize fourteen outstanding local government units instead of the usual ten, reflecting a commitment to excellence in local governance. The awardees from Mindanao, Visayas, and Luzon showcase initiatives in peace-building, environmental protection, health promotion, public-private partnerships, and innovation. These programs address common development challenges and demonstrate the power of knowledge, political will, and community involvement in achieving good governance (p.5).

Message from Development Bank of the Philippines

The Development Bank of the Philippines congratulates the winners of the 2009 Galing Pook Awards for their exemplary local governance programs. These initiatives have contributed significantly to areas such as economic development, youth development, health care, and environmental management. DBP highlights the importance of collaboration with LGUs to support projects that enhance social services and promote sustainable development. The bank's partnerships with LGUs focus on areas like inter-island trade, energy services, environmental protection, and community development, aiming to improve the quality of life for Filipinos (p.6).
