How To Write A Eulogy/Tribute_______________ 3 Components of a Service__________________ 4-5 Example Of An Order Of Service_____________ 6 Poems___________________________________ 7-9 Poems For Family_______________________ 10-11 How To Write A Eulogy/Tribute When writing a eulogy, the most important thing to remember is to write from the heart and express what means the most to you. You can approach the eulogy in a purely chronological way, that is recounting the life of the person from birth to death. Alternatively, some people prefer to deliver a characterisation of the person and an overall picture of their loved one’s life. A eulogy can reflect on their life and include accomplishments, personality traits, and memorable stories. It should offer something by which to remember them. You can do this by telling stories about your loved one, sharing the happy Committal Readings________________________ 12 times, and even the sad, and funny or unusual things that happened in their life. Eulogies are different for everyone, but here are some points to consider: • Childhood: date and place of birth, parents and siblings, where they lived, schools attended • If applicable, where marriage took place and years of marriage. Details of children, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren. • Stand out achievements, community work, voluntary work, or club involvement. • Employment history. • Sporting achievements, sports they were involved in and enjoyed watching. • Hobbies or interests, such as travel, fishing, craft, gardening etc. • Personal stories (What are your favourite memories?). • Life lessons passed on. • Much loved pets. • Personality traits or phrases they may have used often. • The impact that they had on your life. 2 3

Example Of An Order of Service 101. A GOLDEN HEART A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest, it broke our hearts to see you go, God only takes the best. They say that memories are golden, well maybe that is true, but we never wanted memories, we only wanted you. We want to tell you something, so there won’t be any doubt, you’re so wonderful to think of, but so hard to live without. We cannot bring the old days back when we were all together. The family chain is broken now, but memories live forever. 105. AFTERGLOW Our lips cannot speak how we loved you; our hearts cannot tell what to say, but God only knows how we miss you, in our home that is lonely today. I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways of happy times and laughing times and bright and summer days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave when life is done. 102. HER SMILE (HIS SMILE) 106. FEEL NO GUILT IN LAUGHTER Though her/his smile is gone forever and her/ his hand I cannot touch. I still have so many memories of the one I loved so much. Tell his/her I love his/her and miss his/her, and when he/she turns to smile, place a kiss upon his/her cheek and hold his/her for a while. Because remembering his/her is easy, I do it every day but there is an ache within my heart that will never go away. 104. THEY SAY THERE IS A REASON They say there is a reason, they say that time will heal but neither time nor reason, will change the way we feel. 6 For no-one knows the heartache, that lies behind our smiles, no-one knows how many times, we have broken down and cried. Feel no guilt in laughter, he/she’d know how much you care. Feel no sorrow in a smile, that he/she is not here to share. You cannot grieve forever; he/she would not want you to. He/She’d hope that you could carry on the way you always do. So, talk about the good times and the way you showed you cared, the days you spent together, all the happiness you shared. Let memories surround you, a word someone may say; will suddenly recapture; a time, an hour, a day. That brings him/her back as clearly; as though he/she were still here; and fills you with the feeling; that he/she is always near. For if you keep those moments, you will never be apart; and he/she will live forever; locked safely within your heart. 7

107. REMEMBER ME

110. YOU NEVER SAID GOODBYE 113. GOLF COURSE IN THE SKY 116. NOTHING IS THE SAME Remember me with love in your heart as I will too, with the love you impart. Remember me as I was all my days, all my faults too, my funny old ways. You never said I’m leaving you never said goodbye. You were gone before I knew it, and only God knew why. As eighteen flags flew at half mast, and glasses were soberly raised high. The latest member was having a ball at the golf course in the sky. Our lives go on without you, but nothing is the same. We have to hide our heartache, when someone speaks your name. A million times I needed you, a million times I cried. If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. Freed from the gravity of the situation the first tee shot soared through space. Bringing a wondrous, beaming smile to a kind, down to earth face. In life I loved you dearly, in death I love you still in my heart you hold a place, that no one could ever fill. Surrounded by old club friends once thought never to be seen again. The infinity course beckoned ahead eighteen holes were for mere mortal men. Remember me with a smile or laughter then you’ll remember me forever after. Then in heaven I’ll smile along too, remember my thought it’s sweetly true. Whatever thought comes into your heart, remember as an angel my love I impart. Let your days ahead be filled with love until we meet again in heaven above. 108. FAREWELL MY FRIENDS It was beautiful as long as it lasted the journey of my life, I have no regrets whatsoever save the pain I’ll leave behind. Those dear hearts who love and care and the strings pulling at the heart and soul, the strong arms that held me up when my own strength let me down. At every turning of my life, I came across good friends, friends who stood by me, even when the time raced me by. Farewell, farewell, my friends I smile and bid you goodbye. No, shed no tears for I need them not all I need is your smile. If you feel sad do think of me for that’s what I’ll like when you live in the hearts of those you love, remember then you never die. 109. MISS ME, BUT LET ME GO When I come to the end of the road, and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little – but not for long, and not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that once we shared. Miss me but let me go. For this is a journey we must all take and each must go alone. It’s all part of the master plan, a step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick at heart, go to the friends we know, laugh at all the things we used to do. Miss me but let me go. 8 It broke my heart to lose you, but you didn’t go alone. For part of me went with you, the day God took you home. 111. YOU MEANT SO MUCH You meant so much to all of us you were special and that’s no lie. You brightened up the darkest day and the cloudiest of sky. Your smile alone warmed hearts, your laugh was like music to hear. I would give absolutely anything to have you well and standing near. Not a second passes when you’re not on our minds, your love we will never forget the hurt will ease in time. Many tears I have seen cried; they have all poured out like rain. I know that you are happy now and no longer in any pain. 112. DON’T BE TOO SAD Don’t be too sad, I’ve lived my life, I’ve tried my best. The memories I hold dear are experiences I’ve known of happiness and tears. The love of family, the care of friends, and the good times I’ve shared, right to the end. I’ve travelled life’s by-ways, seen children grow up. Experienced life’s living and drunk from love’s cup. I leave you now, with memories and thoughts of you all. I’m no longer with you but your mind will recall the good times we shared and the laughter we’ve had. Please, cherish these memories and don’t be too sad. 114. GONE FISHIN’ I’ve finished life’s chores assigned to me, so put me on a boat headed out to sea. Please send along my fishing pole for I’ve been invited to the fishin’ hole. Where every day is a day to fish, to fill your heart with every wish. Don’t worry or feel sad for me, I’m fishin’ with the Master of the sea. We will miss each other for a while, but you will come and bring your smile. That won’t be long you will see, till we’re together you and me. To all of those that think of me be happy as I go out to sea. If others wonder why I’m missin’ just tell ‘em I’ve gone fishin’. 115. WEEP NOT FOR ME Weep not for me though I am gone into that gentle night. Grieve if you will, but not for long upon my soul’s sweet flight. Sad are the hearts that love you, silent are the tears that fall, living without you; is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, your heart was so kind and true, and when we needed someone, we could always count on you. The special years will not return when we are all together but with the love in our hearts, you walk with us forever. 117. WHEN I COME TO THE END OF THE HORIZON When I come to the end of the horizon and enter the other shore. Remember me with fondness cry for me no more. I have found my final resting place, that special spot to fish. Remember the times we shared you too, I will miss. This is the journey I must take, and I must go alone. Know that my heart is with you, as I take this journey home. To that final fishing hole for fisherman like me. To tell the biggest tales about the one that got free. Remember me with fondness this is not goodbye. It is “till we meet again” at the fishing hole in the sky I am at peace, my soul’s at rest there is no need for tears. For with your love I was so blessed for all those many years. There is no pain, I suffered not, the fear now all is gone. Put now these things out of your thoughts in your memory I live on. Remember not my fight for breath remember not the strife. Please do not dwell upon my death, but celebrate my life. 9

107. REMEMBER ME

Poems For Family

118. LEGACY OF LOVE A wife/husband, a mother/father, a grandmother/grandfather too, this is the legacy we have from you. You taught us love and how to fight, you gave us strength, you gave us might. A stronger person would be hard to find and in your heart, you were always kind. You fought for us all in one way or another, not just as a wife/husband not just as a mother/father. For all of us you gave your best, now the time has come for you to rest. So go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep, your love in our hearts, we’ll eternally keep. 119. ODE TO DAD He never looked for praises he was never one to boast, he just went on quietly working and fishing he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken, his wants were very few and most of the time his worries went unspoken too. He was just there, a firm foundation through all our storms of life, a sturdy hand to hold onto in times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to when times were good or bad, one of our greatest blessings the man that we called Dad. 120. GRANDFATHER KEPT A GARDEN Our Grandfather kept a garden. A garden of the heart. He planted all the good things, that gave our lives their start. He turned us to the sunshine, and encouraged us to dream; fostering and nurturing; the seeds of self-esteem. We are our grandfather’s garden; we are his legacy. Thank you so much grandfather, we love you and always will. 121. NANA To my dearest darling Nana, up in Heaven, high above, I know today you’re with us all, and sending all your love. Today we all remember you, and bid you one last goodbye, celebrate the life you’ve had and maybe have a cry. You’ll never be forgotten Nan, I’ll just close my eyes and see, your smiling face and feel your love, and you’ll be close to me. You had such a long life, so many have so less. It was your time, the angels came; and placed you with the best. So dear Nana, up above although you’re no longer here, in my heart is where I’ll keep you, forever, you’ll be near. 122. IN LOVING MEMORY OF A SPECIAL BROTHER Brother, since you passed away life just hasn’t been the same, I would move heaven and earth to have you here with me again. The time we spent together meant the world to me, I have many treasured memories as we grew up together, happily. I’m so grateful for the years we had and the closeness that we shared, your thoughtfulness and loyalty and the way you always cared. You were a wonderful brother, I miss you no end, you were more than just my family you were a kind and supportive friend. I know I cannot bring you back although I wish it everyday, but a piece of me went with you the day you went away. 124. IN LOVING MEMORY OF MY BELOVED WIFE It broke my heart to lose you, you have left an empty space the love we had together cannot ever be replaced. I will never forget you, all the happy times we shared the joy you brought into my life can never be compared. You’re with me every moment not that we’re apart living on in precious memories like keepsakes in my heart. I miss you more than words can say, my beautiful, wonderful wife only time can heal my pain you were the one true love of my life. 125. LOVING MEMORY OF A HUSBAND Husband, you are my world, you meant everything to me, the love I have for you now; will last eternally. I miss your warmth, I miss your strength I miss your lovely smile, I wish I could see your face again even for a little while. Thank you, your devoted love; that helps me, through each day; and for all the precious memories; that will never fade away. I hope that you have felt at peace since we said goodbye, in my heart I know that we will be together again in time. 123. IN LOVING MEMORY OF A SPECIAL SISTER And then the winds and rain came, he protected us enough, but not too much because he knew; we would stand up strong and tough. The day you left and gained your wings my heart just broke in two, I wish you could have stayed with me but heaven needed you. His constant good example; always taught us right from wrong; markers for our pathway; that will last a lifetime long. 10 You were a very special person with kindness in your heart, and the love that we had together grows stronger now we’re apart. You left me with the memories and I love you dearly still, no matter how much times goes by you know I always will. 11

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance. We embrace all those wonderful times that we had today as we simply say thank you and bid you farewell. 414. ONE AT REST Think of me as one at rest, for me you should not weep, I have no pain no troubled thoughts for I am just asleep. The living thinking me that was is now forever still, and life goes on without me now, as time forever will. If your heart is heavy now because I’ve gone away, dwell not long upon it friend for none of us can stay. Amen. 14 Religious Poems 501. FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it: “Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you’d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, I don’t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.” The Lord replied: “My son, my precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.” 502. WHEN TOMORROW STARTS WITHOUT ME When tomorrow starts without me, and I’m not here to see; If the sun should rise and find your eyes, all filled with tears for me. I wish you wouldn’t cry, the way you did today, while thinking of the many things, we did not get to say. I know how much you love me, as much as I love you. Each time that you think of me, I know you will miss me too. When tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand, that an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand. The angel said my place was ready, in heaven far above, and that I would have to leave behind, all those I dearly love. But when I walked through heaven’s gates, I felt so much at home, when God looked down and smiled at me, from his golden throne. He said this is Eternity, and all I promised you, today for life on earth is done, but here it starts anew. I promise no tomorrow, for today will always last, and since each day’s the exact same way, there is no longing for the past. So when tomorrow starts without me, do not think we’re apart, for every time you think of me, remember I’m right here in your heart. 503 THE FINAL FLIGHT Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free, I’m following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard his call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I’ve found that peace at the end of the day. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, ah, yes, these things too I will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full, I’ve savoured much, good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free. 504. COME WITH ME 505. GOD’S GARDEN God looked around his garden and he found an empty place. And then he looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain, he knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, and the hills were hard to climb. So, he closed your weary eyelids, and whispered “Peace be thine”. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. 506. I’M SENDING A DOVE TO HEAVEN I’m sending a dove to heaven with a parcel on its wing, be careful when you open it, it’s full of beautiful things. Inside are a million kisses, wrapped up in a million hugs. To say how much I miss you, and to send you all my love. I hold you close within my heart and there you will remain. To walk with me throughout my life, until we meet again. God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So, he put his arms around you and whispered, “Come with me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, slowly fade away, although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. You suffered much in silence, your spirit did not bend, you faced your pain with courage until the very end. You tried so hard to stay with us, but your fight was not in vain. God took you to his loving home and freed you from your pain. 15

My father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” Abide With Me........................................Susan Boyle Edelweiss...........................................Michael Siberry Always.................................................. PSALM 121 I lift up my eyes to the mountains where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. 603. PSALM 23 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in the green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul, he guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell In the house of the Lord forever.
