Nursing Professional Development Newsletter Lachon Tyre, MSN, RN (Veteran’s Health Coordinator) designed and created the Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Logo. Her NPD teammates agreed that her design perfectly emulates what NPD aspires for our Nursing Services. INTRODUCING NPD’S ASSOCIATE CHIEF Opokua B. Osei-Yeboah Dr.PH, MSN, RN-BC, CNL Associate Chief Nurse – Nursing Education, Research & Simulation Dr. Opokua OseiYeboah graduated from Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, Massachusetts in 2002. She earned her MSN from Saint Xavier University in Illinois in 2012 and completed her Doctorate Degree in Public Health in 2019. Dr. OseiYeboah joined the VA health system in 2008 and has also served in the United States Army Reserve. Her commitment to nursing professional development is evident through her roles as a Clinical Nurse Leader and faculty for Nursing Schools. Dr. OseiYeboah has played a crucial role in leading various hospitalwide projects, including establishing the first Mental Health Covid Unit for VISN 12 during the 2 peak of the COVID19 pandemic, revitalizing the Jesse Brown VA Patient Education Program, and initiating the Total Joint Surgery Program to reduce readmission rates among Joint Surgery patients. She has also actively participated in numerous nursing evidence -based practice projects, receiving two poster awards at the IOWA evidencebased conference, among other achievements. Dr. Osei-Yeboah's dedication to improving patient care is further demonstrated through her collaboration with vendors to bring advanced equipment to JBVA, developing policies and SOPs, leading the Nurse Practice Council, and creating innovative programs such as the New Pa- tient Orientation Program and the LogiCare patient discharge program. Additionally, she has implemented several initiatives to enhance nursing care, including the Nurse Driven Foley Protocol and the Nursing Care Plan based on Joint Commission Standards. Dr. OseiYeboah's efforts to address burnout among healthcare professionals are evident in her leadership of the Code Lavender project, which aims to support front -line staff during emotional crises. Furthermore, she serves as a mentor for numerous DNP and MSN students. In her personal life, she is a marathon runner and has completed three world Majors, namely New York, Chicago, and Berlin.

March 28, 2024 - NPD re-offered Preceptor Class: The Power-full Preceptor On March 28, 2024, NPD re-offered Preceptor Class since the last offering in July 2021. Presenters were Mark Crucero, Leah Bardach, April AspaIbardaloza and yours truly. Special acknowledgement to AnJelique Gerstein, Laura Kingsbury , Dr. Osei -yeboah and Tonya Morris for their immense support for the success of this class. 19 Clinical Nurses completed the said class. By: Rose Murry, MSN, ACNS based orientation. Items covered include a discussion about different learning styles and the roles and responsibilities of the preceptor/orientee. New skills in communication & delegation techniques, along with prioritization/ time management, socialization, and evaluation were presented. The participants received a segment discussing positive feedback with return demonstration. March 19, 2024: NPD Team and Pathway to Excellence Coordinator partnered and hosted Certified Nurses Day By AnJelique Gerstein, RN - Research Nurse and April Aspa-Ibardaloza, MSN, RN-BC Dr. Opokua Osei-Yeboah, Associate Chief for Nursing Education, Research & Simulation, Nursing Professional Development Team, and Mary Mitchell, Pathway to Excellence Coordinator had teamed up to honor the certified Nurses at JBVAMC on March 19th 2024 at Brig. Gen. Johnson-Brown Conference Room, at 2nd Floor Damen Building. Susan Mickey, MS, RN, Acting Associate Director for Patient Care Services, and Dr. OseiYeboah awarded the certificates of appreciation for JBVAMCs Nurses for getting certified and for maintaining it. A letter of appreciation from Anita Bor-Brown, MS, RN, FACHE, HTCP, Deputy Associate Director Patient Care Services was also given to our Certified Nurses in their honor. Inpatient Associate Chief Nurse, James Kerridge, Outpatient Chief Nurse, Janice Zenarosa Catherine Mullan, from NPD Council joined the NPD Practitioners deliver certification information to night shift Clinical Nurses at the Bed Tower earlier that day. Furthermore, NPD has dedicated a whole page for our Certified Nurses on JB SharePoint (scan QR code to check). 4

April 9 - 12, 2024: JBVAMC NPD team members attended 2024 Aspire Convention at Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk • This year’s ANPD Aspire Convention welcomed three incredible keynote speakers: Donna Cardillo, MA, RN, CSP, FAAN; Bridget M. Carter, PhD, RN, FAAN and Dan Weberg, PhD, MHI, BSN, RN, FAAN. Their topics entitled respectively: • A Nursing Renaissance TM : The Dawn of a New Era - Donna outlined the amazing opportunities to create a new paradigm that will empower, enlighten, and elevate the profession to new heights. • Weaving Inclusive Excellence from the Classroom to the Bedside - Brigit promotes awareness of inclusive excellence in nursing essential for delivering unbiased, patient-centered care. The concepts of inclusive excellence will be used to show how nursing professional development practitioners can develop, implement, and maintain strategies to support a more inclusive, respectful environment that enhances a sense of belonging. 5 Leading Through Innovation: Building the Future of Our Profession - Healthcare is being disrupted and leaders need to take an innovation - first approach to navigate through the uncertainty and create-high performing teams and organizations for the future. Topic objectives: how to lead innovation in healthcare, how to use innovation to amplify deviation, common reasons change fails, and specific action steps for building a culture of adaptability to support future success. April 9, 2024 - NPD presented “Utilizing the Learning Tool of Gamification to Positively Impact Patient Safety and Suicide Prevention” at VHA VEIN On April 9, 2024, Leah Bardach, April Aspa-Ibardaloza and yours truly presented at the VHA VEIN Monthly Educational Session with the topic: Utilizing the Learning Tool of Gamification to Positively Impact Patient Safety and Suicide Prevention. The presentation was well attended by 175 VHA Vein members nationwide. The discussion with the presenters were engaging. Many of the attendees reached out how to go about using gamification in educating clinical nurses. April 17-18, 2024: 31st National Evidence-Based Practice Conference attended by JBVAMC Assistant Nurse Manager, 6East Stepdown and NPD Practitioner at Hyatt Regency Hotel and Conference (Coralville, Iowa) Conference participants will learn cutting-edge developments in application of innovation in EBP for improved design of practice changes; adoption of best evidence; and benefits for diverse patients, clinicians, and organizations. Innovative clinical issues will be discussed with reports on evidence-based solutions across settings. Participants will have opportunities to network with EBP experts and enthusiasts. , leaders, faculty, and experts. The program is designed to meet the needs of practicing nurses, interprofessional team members This year’s 31st National Evidence-Based Practice Conference was held at Hyatt Regency Hotel and Conference with a theme focused on Innovation in Evidence-Based Practice. Keynote Speakers were: Dr. Oriana Beaudet, DNP, RN, FAAN is the vice president of Nursing Innovation and works across the ANA Enterprise (American Nurses Association, American Nurses Credentialing Center, and the American Nurses Foundation) to support the development of nurses and healthcare innovation. Objectives: • Discover new pathways and innovative approaches for EBP. • Describe strategies for engaging patients, clinicians, and communities in EBP. • Facilitate networking to advance application of EBP to improve health care outcomes. Dr. Kenrick Cato, PHD, RN, CPHIMS, FAAN, FACMI is a Professor of Informatics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and a Nurse Scientist for Pediatric Data and Analytics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The conference purpose: Nurses and frontline clinicians have always been innovators in discovering practice solutions. Today, in healthcare, we are challenged in new ways to innovate and deliver evidence-based practice (EBP) using timely and meaningful methods across populations and settings. This is a critical time to embrace innovations developed for healthcare delivery, while remaining adaptive to new technology. Innovation in EBP goes beyond traditional healthcare practices to open minds for innovative thinking and exploring new possibilities. Learn how innovation can turn a hot button topic into actionable results.
