She further stated that today, after 22 days of his judicial custody, the court has ordered that a medical board of one specialist diabetes doctor, one specialist diabetologist and an oncologist should be formed which will take complete care of Arvind Kejriwal to get medical treatment. Taking a veiled jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), she said, “So this makes it clear that despite having such severe diabetes for 22 days, despite his sugar level being above 300, despite his request for isolation, he was not getting proper medical care.” She asserted, “So we hope that the medical board of AIIMS, which will have specialist diabetes doctors, will be found today itself, will check upon Arvind Kejriwal and will start the process of insulating him from today itself...” Meanwhile, the Rouse Avenue Court declined a plea moved by Kejriwal seeking direction to jail authorities to administer insulin and Remember: allow him to consult through video conferencing daily for 15 minutes concerning his acute diabetes and fluctuating blood sugar level. However, the court directed the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) to constitute a medical board to examine Kejriwal’s health. The Special Judge Kaveri Baweja while passing the order stated that directions are hereby passed qua the prayer of the applicant for the administration of insulin and also to ensure that the applicant is provided all the requisite medical treatment. “Though it shall continue to be the primary duty of Tihar Jail authorities, who are stated to be fully equipped to take care of the health of the applicant, to ensure that all requisite medical treatment is provided to him in jail, however, in the event of any requirement for specialized consultation, the jail Authorities shall consult the Medical Board to be constituted by Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), comprising of a senior endocrinologist, diabetologist, as per the request made on April 20, already sent by DG Prisons,” said the Court. (ANI) “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever” –PSALM Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], April 23 (ANI): A person died and as many as 124 others were hospitalised because of heat-related illnesses across 16 districts in Odisha. He added that one death related to heatstroke was reported in the Balasore district. “All the deaths have to be thoroughly investigated through a joint inquiry. We have been spreading awareness on heatrelated illnesses from the beginning. We are running a campaign and trying to communicate about dos and don’ts with people through the media,” he said. He stated that last year, heat wave conditions in Odisha prevailed for 14 days. Speaking about preparedness amid the prevailing heatwave, he said, “We have arranged beds and have stocked up adequately on drugs and medicines. We have trained our doctors to treat heat-related patients.” Significantly, the maximum temperatures in some districts have crossed 45.2 °C this summer. Earlier on Saturday, as Odisha continued to be in the grip of a heatwave, the Met department held out no immediate hope of a respite as it forecast the maximum daytime temperature to hit 45°C over the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, parts of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh also continued to be in the grip of a sultry spell on Saturday. In Varanasi and the adjoining regions of Purvanchal, the maximum daytime temperature reached close to 43°C, the IMD reported. A heatwave, sometimes described as extreme heat, is a period of abnormally hot weather. It is a prolonged period of excessively hot weather, typically with high temperatures and often accompanied by high humidity. A heatwave is usually measured relative to the usual climate in the area and normal temperatures for the season. (ANI) Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], April 23 (ANI): Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat raised questions about the credibility of the Election Commission of India (ECI) following what she calls “a shocking statement” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to Karat, the Prime Minister’s words violated Indian laws against inciting communal enmity and hate speech, yet the ECI has failed to take appropriate action. “The Prime Minister is a citizen of India. The Prime Minister is not above the citizens of India. The Prime Minister is not above the law of India. The Prime Minister has to accept the laws of India. When the Prime Minister violates the laws of India which are against spreading enmity between communities, against spreading hatred between a community, he should be taken to task by the law,” Karat said. “The Election Commission’s role in this is completely shocking. What is the credibility of the Election Commission if they don’t take action against the Prime Minister?” she added. Karat described the Prime Minister’s speech as “almost unbelievable” for a leader of a secular nation like India. “It is an absolutely shocking statement coming from the Prime Minister. It is almost unbelievable that the Prime Minister of a secular country like India should speak in words, quite frankly, he speaks as though a communal bigot speech. It is not befitting the Prime Minister of India. In the elections, to use such language, a) It is hate speech, extreme hate speech,” Karat said. She accused him of targeting a specific community and using hate speech to mobilize votes during election season. Further the CPI(M) leader revealed that she had filed a police complaint against the Prime Minister, citing sections of the Indian Penal Code related to hate speech and communal violence. However, Karat expressed frustration that her complaint was initially refused at a local police station, forcing her to send it directly to the Police Commissioner of Delhi. “I have written a complaint and cited certain sections of the penal code of India and I have filed a Police complaint and it is really shocking that the Police KARAT SEE PAGE 6 CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat questions “credibility” of EC over PM’s speech

April 26, 2024 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Odisha is first state in India to present separate agriculture budget: Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik Hinjili (Odisha) [India], April 24 (ANI): BJD chief and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik kicked off the election campaign from Hinjili constituency on Wednesday. He stated that Odisha is the first state in India to present a separate agriculture budget. Naveen Patnaik said, “This decade will be a golden era for the youth of the state as the government is placing emphasis on employment and skill development. We will bring a Youth budget in the state. Odisha is the first state in India to present a separate agriculture Budget.” He further remarked that the coming decade will belong to Odisha. “Development is our identity. However, opposition parties are playing politics on every issue and opposing developmental activities. They had opposed projects including the Shree Mandir Prikrama project. People of the state are aware of it. The coming decade will belong to Odisha,” he added. 5T Chairman VK Pandian also addressed a public rally in Hinjili Assembly Constituency in Ganjam district. Assembly and Lok Sabha elections will be held simultaneously in Odisha in four phases, starting from Phase one on May 13, Phase two on May 20, Phase three on May 25 and the final Phase on June 1. The results will be announced on June 4. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Odisha, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) emerged as the dominant party, securing 20 out of the 21 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a single seat. However, the 2019 elections saw a shift in the political landscape. The BJD’s seat count was reduced to 12, while the BJP made significant gains, winning 8 seats. This change marked a notable increase in the BJP’s presence in the state. The Indian National Congress (INC) also managed to secure a seat in the 2019 elections. (ANI) Ambedkar Nagar (Uttar Pradesh) [India], April 24 (ANI): Around 70 people in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar were hospitalised on Wednesday after they allegedly suffered from food poisoning. According to the officials, all persons were admitted to the hospital after having food at a wedding ceremony in Ambedkar Nagar. However, their condition is now under control. “Around 70 cases have come, and everyone is in a stable condition. People have said that they fell sick after having food at a wedding function, so most probably, it could be food poisoning. Everything is under control... they’re all admitted to the hospital right now,” Superintendent Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Joint District Hospital Ambedkar Nagar said while speaking to ANI. Further details are awaited. Life is queer with its twists and turns. As everyone of us sometimes learns. And many a fellow turns about when he might have won had he stuck it out. Don’t give up though the pace seems slow – you may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up when he might have captured the victor’s cup; and he learned too late when the night came down, how close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure tuned inside out – the silver tint of the clouds of doubt, and when you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar; So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit – it’s when things seem worst, you must not quit. Fortunately, later he felt good and resumed his poll campaign. Gadkari himself informed in a post on X on Wednesday, “I felt uncomfortable due to the heat during the rally in Pusad, Maharashtra. But now I am completely healthy and am leaving for Varud to attend the next meeting. Thank you for your love and good wishes,” wrote Gadkari in a post on X. Notably, Nitin Gadkari is among the star campaigners for the BJP in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections 2024 and is busy doing several rallies across the nation. Gadkari is contesting from the Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency which underwent a poll on April 19. Nagpur Lok Sabha is witnessing a contest between Nitin Gadkari and Congress’ Vikas Thakre, who is currently the Nagpur West MLA. Earlier, exuding confidence over the outcome of the Nagpur Lok Sabha seat, Gadkari had said that he is 101 per cent sure about winning the election from his constituency. You are talking of snatching it in your manifesto... will distribute gold and redistribute. When it was their government, they had said that Muslims have the first right over the country’s wealth. Who will you distribute after collecting the wealth, distribute it to those who have more children, and distribute it to infiltrators. April 26, 2024 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Chidambaram calls PM Modi’s speech in Rajasthan a “shame”, says “level of debate sank to a new low” New Delhi [India], April 22 (ANI): Former finance minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram alleged that the “level of debate has sunk to a new low after April 21,” referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech in a public rally in Rajasthan’s Banswara. “I cannot recall that any other prime minister had made such outrageous statements like PM Modi did at Jalore & Banswara in Rajasthan yesterday. Each sentence outdid the previous sentence in its absolute falsehood and brazen mendacity,” Chidambaram said in a post on X. The veteran leader also questioned the Bharatiya Janata Party on claims against the Congress party regarding alleged announcements to distribute people’s land and other valuables among Muslims, among others. “Will the BJP tell the world: a) when and where did the Congress say that we will distribute people’s land, gold and other valuables among Muslims? b) when and where did the Congress say that a survey will be conducted to value the property of individuals, gold held by women and silver owned by tribal families? c) When and where did the Congress say that land and cash belonging to government employees will also be distributed?,” Chidambaram said in the post. “The Prime Minister must have some respect for his predecessor. Dr Manmohan Singh’s speech to the NDC in December 2006 has been reproduced in the Indian Express today. Dr Singh had said that the first claim on resources lies with SC, ST, OBC, minorities, women and children. It is scandalous to distort his words as Mr. Modi has done. The level of debate has sunk to a new low after April 21. It is a shame,” the post mentioned. Earlier in the day, a delegation led by senior Congress leader and Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi met with the Election Commission of India, urging to take “appropriate action” against the Prime Minister ‘irrespective of the status of the person’ over his alleged speech. In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Today an @INCIndia delegation comprising of Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Gurdeep Sappal, and Supriya Shrinate met with the Election Commission of India at 4 PM and put forward 16 complaints against the BJP and other actors for violations of The Representation of the People Act, 1951, various judgements of the Supreme Court, and the ECI’s Model Code of Conduct. We hope that immediate action will be taken on these very legitimate complaints.” New Delhi [India], April 22 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah hit out at the Congress party on Monday after senior leader P Chidambaram criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech in Rajasthan’s Banswara, calling it a “shame”. Shah alleged that Congress only indulges in appeasement politics, and after “reading the crushing defeat written for them on the walls,” the Congress leaders have “lost their nerve”. “That is why they are working on their appeasement policy again. After the first phase of voting, the Congress clearly understood that the people of the country are determined to bloom the lotus once again with a strong majority, so now the Congress is making its last-ditch attempt. But the people of the country know about the Congress party’s reality very well. The people of the country, are going to teach Congress a lesson like they did in 2014 and 2019 and with even greater might,” Amit Shah said in a statement. “Congress leaders are talking about abolishing those laws that empower the common people of the country and protect their rights. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 (CAA) and 3 new criminal laws, i.e., Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, will be revoked if Congress comes to power,” the statement mentioned. Shah claimed that neither Congress will ever come to power nor will the laws enacted for public welfare ever be revoked. The Union Home Minister said that through the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the priority of the BJP government is to provide Indian citizenship and secure the rights of persecuted Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Christian, Sikh, and Parsi communities from Singhvi said that the Prime Minister’s statement was ‘seriously, ridiculously objectionable’. “Most important is the first one, which deals with the extremely objectionable comments of no less than the Chief Executive of this government. We respect the office he holds. He is as much our Prime Minister as he is yours and he is BJP’s. Unfortunately, the statement we have quoted is seriously, ridiculously objectionable. We pray to him (PM Modi) with folded hands to withdraw this statement and to clarify. We have asked the Election Commission to state that this is the position in law, we will do in his respect, whatever we do with others,” the senior Congress leader told reporters earlier in the day. He called the speech a “very serious, uncalled-for invasion” of the Constitution’s basic structure and appealed to the ECI for action. “The constitutional ethos and spirit that make secularism a basic structure in our Constitution make a level playing field and democracy itself a part of the basic structure. A basic structure means that a constitutional amendment cannot violate the basic structure. This is a very serious, uncalledfor invasion and we hope and trust because the ECI is itself on trial that, irrespective of the status of the person who has done this appropriate action as in any other case, it will and must follow shortly,” Singhvi said. PM Modi, earlier on April 21, while addressing a public rally in Rajasthan’s Banswara, alleged that the Congress wants to take away the gold and property of people and distribute it among “those having more children.” The Prime Minister said that if the Congress came to power, it would redistribute the wealth of people to Muslims and cited former PM Manmohan Singh’s remark that the minority community had the first claim on the country’s resources. Modi further alleged that the Congress plans to give people’s hard-earned money and valuables to “infiltrators” and “those who have more children”. He further claimed that the “Urban Naxal” thinking wouldn’t even spare the ‘Mangalsutra’. “When they (Congress) were in government, they said that Muslims have the first right over India’s resources. So, they will distribute this wealth (property and gold) among those having more children, among illegal immigrants... this Urban Naxal thinking won’t even spare your Mangalsutra,” he added. (ANI) Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. “This law represents the fundamental principles of the Constitution. P Chidambaram is insulting the dreams of the architects of the country’s independence, who advocated for these laws, by talking about scrapping them. CAA is the nation’s law, and it ensures that no one can stop citizenship from being granted to the brothers and sisters of Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Christian, Sikh, and Parsi communities who have suffered religious persecution and come to India,” the statement read. “Congress is hell-bent on harming Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Christian, Sikh, and Parsi communities to appease its vote bank. It is Modi’s guarantee that each individual from persecuted minority communities who have come to India from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh will receive citizenship through the CAA, and no one can stop it,” it mentioned further. Shah further claimed that by abolishing 150-yearold laws, the BJP, under the leadership of PM Modi has, for the first time in India’s history, attributed Indianness to the legal system, but the Congress still does not want to abandon its mentality of slavery. Therefore, these people are objecting to these laws, which are fragrant in the country’s soil, while the justice system of the country is praising them openly, he added. The BJP leader asserted confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party would win more than 400 seats with a resounding majority under the leadership of PM Modi. Once again, the country is headed to form a Modi government, and the public is voting in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party to build a developed India, the statement added. Earlier in the day, former finance minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram alleged that the “level of debate has sunk to a new low after April 21,” referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech in a public rally in Rajasthan’s Banswara. The veteran leader also questioned the Bharatiya Janata Party on claims against the Congress party regarding alleged announcements to distribute people’s land and other valuables among Muslims, among others. “The Prime Minister must have some respect for his predecessor. FRIDAY APRIL 26, 2024 9 “Shakti of alliance is so strong that...,” Mallikarjun Kharge at INDIA bloc rally R a n c h i (Jharkhand) [India],April 21 (ANI): Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party and asserted that the ‘Shakti‘ of the INDIA bloc is so strong that the people of BJP cannot break our ‘Shakti‘. “They keep saying 500, 400 (seats). But this time, the ‘Shakti‘ of the alliance is so strong that whether it is PM Modi or whoever, the people of BJP cannot break our Shakti. We are that strong. They are trying to scare us. But we will not get scared if Hemant Soren is sent to jail for refusing to part ways with the INDIA bloc,” Kharge said while addressing the INDIA bloc rally. He further said that the BJP would be wiped out if it continued to terrorise tribals. “Prime Minister insulted President Murmu by not inviting her to Ram Temple Pran Pratishtha, Parliament Building opening,” he asserted. Earlier today, Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh also attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party and said that when BJP speaks about corruption it seems like “Osama Bin Laden and Gabbar Singh are speaking about non-violence.” Addressing the INDIA bloc rally in Jharkhand, Sanjay Singh attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that PM Modi‘s washing powder cleans all corruption. “Narendra Modi speaks against corruption. He put Hemant Soren, and Arvind Kejriwal in jail under false accusations. When he (PM Modi) and BJP speak on corruption, it looks as if Osama Bin Laden and Gabbar Singh are preaching non-violence. A Modi washing powder has come which cleans all your corruptions. Their slogan is ‘Jo jitna bada bhrashtachari, wo utna bada padadhikari,” Sanjay Singh said. Sanjay Singh further asserted that he, Arvind Kejriwal and Hemant Soren are not scared of Prime Minister Modi. “Two Viranganas are sitting here – Kalpana Soren and Sunita Kejriwal. When they can come out, we should also come out. The people who congregated here want to give a message to defeat PM Modi. I was in jail for 6 months, Arvind Kejriwal is in jail, and Hemant Soren is in jail. We are not scared. Adivasis threw Britishers out,” he said. INDIA bloc leaders, Delhi Chief Minister’s wife Sunita Kejriwal and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Kalpana Soren attended a rally in Jharkhand’s Ranchi. The grand rally is being held amidst the Lok Sabha polls over the arrest of the ex-Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren and the AAP’s Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, two of the key faces of the INDIA bloc. Both Hemant Soren and Kejriwal are in judicial custody. Two empty chairs, one each for jailed Delhi chief minister Kejriwal and former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, were kept on stage. Earlier, a similar INDIA bloc rally was also held in the Ramlila Maidan in the national capital, where several opposition leaders joined hands to make a call for “saving democracy” in the country. Elections will be held in Jharkhand in four phases: May 13, 20, 25, and June 1. In 2019, the BJPled National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 12 seats in Jharkhand, with the BJP winning 11. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress got one seat each. Meanwhile, the Tihar Jail Administration submitted a report to the Delhi Lieutenant Governor yesterday regarding the health status of Kejriwal, who has been lodged in Tihar jail since April 1 this year. According to the report, Kejriwal was on insulin for diabetes control. The report also called it “incorrect” to say that the Chief Minister was being denied insulin by jail authorities. Earlier on Friday, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court reserved an order on a plea moved by Kejriwal seeking direction from Tihar jail authorities to administer insulin and allow him to consult doctors through video conferencing daily for 15 minutes with respect to his acute diabetes and fluctuating blood sugar level. Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the ED about the Delhi Excise Policy case. The trial court, on April 15, extended the judicial custody of Arvind Kejriwal until April 23. The ED alleged that the Aam Adami Party is the major beneficiary of the proceeds of crime generated in the alleged liquor scam. (ANI)
