MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISER Amid the continuous breadth and scope of digital age, and amid the recent invigorating political discursive acts on social media, which are replete with lying, misleadingness, humbug, esoteric truths, creative truths, agnotology (Block, 2019), and fake news, “How do PWU students write and express opinions on social media that can cultivate, propagate and promote healthy discourses?” To answer this essential question, the Office of the Dean of the PWU-School of Arts and Sciences has institutionalized this project in ‘Purposive Communication.” It is dubbed as the “The Young Columnists” project, which runs within the Midterm period (Week 6 to Week 9) of every trimester at PWU. I personally thank those P-COM students who expressed their consent to get their essays published in this Issue. Their voices in their essays have resonated linguistic fluency, rationality and prudence. I personally thank, Assoc. Prof. Elizabeth Ann Gutierrez for facilitating this Issue with zeal. Enjoy yourselves reading! Full Prof. Dr. Leonardo Munalim, LPT Adviser, The Philwomenian Dean, School of Arts and Sciences Director, Research and Development Office

MESSAGE FROM THE PROFESSOR We have a whole generation of great minds waiting to unfold immeasurable voices that will imbibe the outcry of our society. With the youth carrying the baton to the race of wisdom, we then are met at the forefront of the battle against media illiteracy. There are two fonts to fight against this: first, we may choose to outwit opponents through knowledge and skills; second - with only a smear of attitude and passion. Perhaps, a crucial condition we face nowadays is that somehow, we believe everything that other people tell us and we allow them to influence our way of thinking. We must be selective in our input for information. The question will be about, how credible is the source? Thus, our youth must commiserate on the illogical wave of the bandwagon and learn to comprehend information, time, space, and empathy. I can see that our PWU youth have the competencies to intellectually understand pain and oppression. We have struggled many years over freedom, whereas the real deal would be the responsibility to hone it. Keep writing, Patriotic Philwomenians! Assoc. Prof. Elizabeth Ann T. Gutierrez Course Professor, Purposive Communication PWU - School of Arts and Sciences

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR This Purposive Communication project, "The Young Columnists" is aimed at making the PWU students reflect on this: "How do you write and express opinions on social media that can cultivate, propagate and promote healthy discourses?" As I edited the essays of my fellow Patriots, no doubt that they have demonstrated the skills that will make them responsible writers and purveyor of information and opinions, unlike what we see on social media, where ad hominem attacks, for example, are prevalent. These young columnists, likewise, use rhetorical power and the art of argumentation when engaging their reader-audiences. I thank the Dean of SAS Dr. L. Munalim for agreeing with us to release the GE students' essays in this Special Issue for AY 2021-2022-First Trimester. I thank Assoc. Prof. Elizabeth Ann Gutierrez for the support. In the future, we wish to release regular Special Issues of this "Young Columnists" project in The Philwomenian so that the students have the platform to share their opinions with the PWU Community. Continue inking your opinions in, Philwomenians! Majella Vinda Therese Ricafranca Chief Editor, The Philwomenian
