Farming and ranching have been crucial in Central Oregon's history, with pioneers settling near the Deschutes River. However, dwindling water supplies are now threatening the rural way of life, making it challenging for farmers to sustain their crops and communities. To address this issue, updating irrigation infrastructure is essential to support farmers, the community, and the environment (p. 1).
The Deschutes Basin Irrigation districts, represented by the Deschutes Basin Board of Control (DBBC), are vital in conveying water to over 7,600 farm and ranch families in Central Oregon. These districts are focused on modernizing irrigation systems to enhance water reliability, conserve water, and improve fish and wildlife habitats, contributing significantly to the region's economy and environment (p. 1).
Investments in modernizing irrigation infrastructure in Oregon's Deschutes Basin have led to water conservation, fisheries improvement, and hydropower projects. These initiatives not only support farmers and ranchers but also benefit the environment by increasing instream flows, enhancing habitats for various species, and creating opportunities for economic growth. With over $350 million worth of projects in place, the region is set to see job creation and economic stimulation (p. 1).
