ASSIGNMENT 1

PANDORA'S BOX Assignment 1, titled "Pandora's Box," is a foundational exploration into basic carpentry and joinery techniques. Drawing inspiration from the Greek myth of Pandora's box—a symbol of both misfortune and hope—this project emphasizes the construction of an A3 square box using box/finger joints and rabbet joints. The exercise introduces students to essential furniture-making skills, including the use of tools, machinery, and safety practices in a workshop environment. By mastering the principles of precision and finish, participants not only create a functional artifact but also gain a deeper appreciation for craftsmanship and storytelling through design.

ASSIGNMENT 2

What’s in the PANDORA’S BOX? Assignment 2, titled "What's in the Box?" builds upon the foundation established in Project 1 by transforming the A3 square box into a dynamic storytelling device. This project challenges students to integrate mechanization and moving parts, exploring concepts such as automata and music boxes to narrate a compelling story inspired by the themes of Pandora's box. Through the use of various materials and simple mechanisms like folding and sliding, participants design and craft a mechanical box that conveys their chosen narrative. This hands-on assignment emphasizes creativity, technical skill, and the ability to merge functionality with storytelling in design.
