he Core of the Coaching Approach Introduction You won't become a Coach by reading this book. My hope is that you will increasingly and more effectively use a Coaching Approach in your work. What is a Coaching Approach? A 'Coaching Approach' is what we call 'using the competencies of a coach'. How close you come to being a Coach is up to you. Perhaps you will add just a handful more Coaching competencies and use them from time to time, or perhaps you will add dozens of these competencies and use your favourites on a daily basis. 2

he Core of the Coaching Approach Where to start The best places to start developing your Coaching competencies are the self-management skills of: ● Active listening ● Non-judgement ● and being comfortable with not-knowing. The more visible competencies of using powerful questioning techniques and asking open questions. The full range of Coaching competencies is described in this book. The main resources for this book are the descriptions contained in the "ICF Core Competencies". It is a Coach's reference and guide. These clear and comprehensive descriptions of the core competencies will give you indications of which Coaching competencies you could choose to use in your work. 3

he Core of the Coaching Approach W hat is Coaching? There are many definitions. As an educator, my personal favourite descriptions give a hint of what this book is about. "Coaching is unlocking a person's potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them." Sir John Whitmore "Coaching is partnering with coachees in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires the coachee to maximize their personal and professional potential." ICF, International Coach Federation We hope that you will see these Coaching competencies as practical, simple, easy and effective. In addition, we hope 5
